    <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">An Account of the Mint in the Tower of London. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2">The Mint or Change is by the Charter thereof a Corporation 
        <lb xml:id="l1"/>consisting of the Warden, the Workers the Moneyers &amp; the other 
        <lb xml:id="l2"/>Ministers. <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">Th</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">It may buy &amp; sell, sue &amp; be sued &amp; is</add> free from Taxes arrests <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">pressings</add> &amp; servitude in <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Iuries &amp;</add> forreign offices unless 
        <lb xml:id="l3"/>where the Charter is over-ruled by Act of Parliament.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par3">The Warden or Keeper of the Changes is by the Charter a 
            <lb xml:id="l4"/>Magistrate appointed to do right &amp; justice among the Wor<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">k</add>ers, Mo<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l5"/>neyers &amp; other <del type="cancelled">Magistrates</del> Ministers in all their complaints &amp; diffe<lb xml:id="l6"/>rences except in causes of freehold &amp; causes relating to the crown, 
            <lb xml:id="l7"/>&amp; may call a Court. And <del type="strikethrough">thereby it is that they <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/> are free</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">free</del> thence they are freed</add> from 
            <lb xml:id="l8"/><add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes">suits &amp;</add> arrests. Standing Orders are made by him the Master &amp; Controller 
            <lb xml:id="l9"/><add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes">(as a Court or Board)</add> or <add place="inline" indicator="no">by</add> any two of them whereof he <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">to</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">be</add> one. Hence Letters from the 
            <lb xml:id="l10"/>Treasury are directed <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> to them &amp; sometimes to them by name &amp; to 
            <lb xml:id="l11"/>the rest of the Officers in generall. In <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">some</add> things
            <del type="strikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>below stairs (such as <lb xml:id="l12"/>relate to</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><orig/><reg>(</reg></choice>as about</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> buildings<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">assays of the money</add> &amp;c) the Assay master may be also called to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 
            <lb xml:id="l13"/>consult. <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">But</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">For</add> the Warden <del type="strikethrough">takes care of the buildings &amp;</del> pays the 
            <lb xml:id="l14"/>charges of <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">necessary</add> repairs first <del type="strikethrough">allowed</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">avouched</add> by the Master Controller &amp; Assay<choice><orig>m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>master</reg></choice> 
            <lb xml:id="l15"/>or any two of them whereof the Master to be one. He super<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l16"/>vises the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">whole</add> process of the coynage &amp; pays <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> charges thereof &amp; the 
            <lb xml:id="l17"/>salaries of the Officers except the Masters Salary &amp; coynage allowance <lb xml:id="l18"/>&amp; salaries &amp; allowances as are appointed to be paid by the 
            <lb xml:id="l19"/>Master <add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="yes">all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> were <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">by the warden</del></add> received of the King <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">by the warden</del></add> &amp; paid <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">to</add> the <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">M</del> War</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Officers &amp; workmen by the Warden</add> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>efore the enacting of the coin<lb xml:id="l20"/>age duty, but <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> now <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the Master</add> retaine<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add> out of that duty <del type="strikethrough">by the Master</del> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">wh</add>at the Warden should <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">otherwise</add> pay to him</add>. 
                <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> With the consent of the General of <add place="infralinear" indicator="yes">the Mint of</add> Scotland <add place="inline" indicator="no">t</add>he <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Warden</add> makes 
                <lb xml:id="l21"/>the standard weights of England &amp; Scotland. <add place="inline interlinear" indicator="no">He keeps <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">an</add> Indented trial 
                <lb xml:id="l22"/>piece<del type="cancelled">s</del> to examin the assays by as oft as he shall think convenient, &amp; the Master keeps another 
                    <lb xml:id="l23"/>to make the moneys by.</add></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par4">The Workers are the Master &amp; his Assaymaster &amp; Melter &amp; 
            <lb xml:id="l24"/>Refiner <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> their Assistants Clerks &amp; Vnderworkmen. The Master 
            <lb xml:id="l25"/>upon new occasions of coynage contracts <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the King by Indenture 
            <lb xml:id="l26"/>&amp; according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture by the assistance of his aforesaid ser<lb xml:id="l27"/>vants receives, melts, refines, assays rates &amp; standards the gold &amp; silver 
            <lb xml:id="l28"/>to be coyned, sets it out to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Potts, runs it into standard barrs &amp; 
            <lb xml:id="l29"/><choice><sic>&amp;</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> delivers those barrs by weight to the Moneyers <add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="yes">&amp; after coynage receives it from them &amp; delivers it to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Importer by weight<choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> &amp; by his Clerks 
            <lb xml:id="l30"/>enters the accounts thereof in Day-books, Leger-books, Melting 
            <lb xml:id="l31"/>books, Pott-books &amp; Books of Debtor &amp; Creditor.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par5">The Moneyers draw cut out size blanch edge &amp; coyne those 
            <lb xml:id="l32"/>barrs into moneys &amp; return the moneys, scissel &amp; brokage back 
            <lb xml:id="l33"/>to the Master by weight. <add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="yes">They may not pay or distribute any moneys unassayd upon pain of forfeiting their franchises &amp; bodies <lb xml:id="l34"/>to prison.</add> They take apprentices &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">without <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="2"/></del></add> form them<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l35"/>selves into a <del type="strikethrough">government</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Company</add> by electing one their number to be 
            <lb xml:id="l36"/>their Provost. They live in the Country &amp; are bou<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>d to attend 
            <lb xml:id="l37"/>&amp; do their work whenever summoned by the Warden Master 
            <lb xml:id="l38"/><del type="over">&amp;</del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">r</add> Controller upon pain of losing their Franchises &amp; bodies to 
            <lb xml:id="l39"/>Prison. They are to work in such tasks &amp; so many hours every 
            <lb xml:id="l40"/>day (sundays only excepted) as shall be appointed by the Master 
            
            <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">&amp;</fw><pb xml:id="p006v" n="6v"/>
            
            &amp; for wilfull neglect or refusall the Warden Master &amp; Controller 
            <lb xml:id="l41"/>(that is the Court) may expell or otherwise punish them <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">(or other workmen)</add> as shall 
            <lb xml:id="l42"/>seem meet for their Majesties service &amp; by the same power (as in 
            <lb xml:id="l43"/>all other Corporations) may grant freedom to new Moneyers when <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">it</add> <lb xml:id="l44"/>shall be requisite. <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">They may not <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">pa</add>y or distribute any unassayd &amp; inpixed money</add> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">upon pain of forfeiting their franchises &amp; bodies to prison.</add></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par6">The other Ministers are the Controller, Kings <del type="cancelled">Clerk</del> Assaymaster 
            <lb xml:id="l45"/>Surveyor of the Meltings, Weigher &amp; Teller, King's Clerk, Clerk of 
            <lb xml:id="l46"/>the Irons <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add>c. These are standing Officers with set salaries <del type="strikethrough">the <lb xml:id="l47"/>Moneyers</del> to che<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice> the Moneyers &amp; Workers &amp; see that they do their 
            <lb xml:id="l48"/>duty in working &amp; coyning the gold &amp; silver: the <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">w</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>orkers &amp; 
            <lb xml:id="l49"/>Moneyers <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">(except th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> Master since the reign of Charles II)</add> are <choice><sic>no</sic><corr>not</corr></choice> standing Officers nor have Salaries but as 
            <lb xml:id="l50"/>workmen receive wages after a certain rate in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pound weight 
            <lb xml:id="l51"/>for all the gold &amp; silver they work &amp; coyne<choice><sic>,</sic><corr><del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">.</add></corr></choice> <del type="strikethrough">except that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l52"/>Master in the reign of K. Charles II became a standing Officer <lb xml:id="l53"/>with a salary</del><choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="delText">.</corr></choice></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par7">The Controller is in behalf of the King a Che<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice> upon 
            <lb xml:id="l54"/>the Master in his accounts &amp; upon the Assaymasters in their 
            <lb xml:id="l55"/>assays. He makes a Controllment Roll upon Oath every year 
            <lb xml:id="l56"/>of all the Bullion molten with its allay &amp; of all the moneys 
            <lb xml:id="l57"/>coyned <del type="strikethrough">from</del> month<add place="inline" indicator="no">ly</add> <del type="strikethrough">to month that year</del> &amp; supervises the whole 
            <lb xml:id="l58"/>coynage, &amp; with the Warden &amp; Master locks up the Bullion &amp; 
            <lb xml:id="l59"/>new coyned moneys &amp; the Pix &amp; coynage duty: in doing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the 
            <lb xml:id="l60"/>Warden &amp; Controller are a guard upon the Master's <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">bullion</add> moneys &amp; Pix 
            <lb xml:id="l61"/>&amp; the Master &amp; Controller are a guard upon the coynage duty to 
            <lb xml:id="l62"/>be issued out by the Warden according to ancient custome.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par8">The Assaymaster is in behalf of the King a che<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice> upon the 
            <lb xml:id="l63"/>Master for his Assays &amp; keeps a book of all the gold &amp; silver as 
            <lb xml:id="l64"/>to quantity &amp; fineness &amp; of all the Pott-assays. 
             <add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="yes">He &amp; the Warden &amp; Controller or any two of them chuse the ingot for the Pott assay. 
                <lb xml:id="l65"/>When <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> money is coyned he tries it both in weight &amp; fineness before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Warden the Master &amp; Controller, 
                <lb xml:id="l66"/>&amp; if it prove without remedy the Master bears the loss. And the Warden at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same time <lb xml:id="l67"/>takes out money for the Pix.</add>
            When the Importer 
            <lb xml:id="l68"/>&amp; Master disagree about the price of Bullion the Assaymaster in 
            <lb xml:id="l69"/>the presence of the Warden Master &amp; Controller assays the 
            <lb xml:id="l70"/>same &amp; the Master then receives it &amp; stands charged with it<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">.</unclear></del> 
            <lb xml:id="l71"/>according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> report of the Assaymaster who is a sworn officer. <add place="infralinear interlinear" indicator="no">In cases of <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">moment</unclear> the truth is tried by the <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">wardens</add> indented trial piece.
            <del type="strikethrough">If upon trial of the Pix <lb xml:id="l72"/>the money proves worse or better the<add place="inline" indicator="no">n</add> <del type="cancelled">Master</del> standard, the Master accordingly becomes debitor or creditor to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King</del></add></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par9">The Surveyor of the Meltings is in behalf of the King 
            <lb xml:id="l73"/>a che<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice> upon the Melter to see that the gold &amp; silver &amp; its allay 
            <lb xml:id="l74"/>&amp; nothing else be put into the melting-pot<add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> <del type="strikethrough">&amp; that the Ingot for</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Whenever <add place="inline" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> Pot is opened he watches <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add>a<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="6"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">nothin</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">g</add> <del type="strikethrough">that</del> un<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">fit</add> <del type="strikethrough">Ingot for</del> be put into it, &amp;</add> <add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes">when it is laded out he sees that</add> the Pot assay be duly taken <del type="strikethrough">before the Warden Master &amp; Controller <lb xml:id="l75"/>or two of them &amp; carried to the Assaymaster.</del><add place="infralinear" indicator="no">&amp; carried to the Assay-office.</add> He keeps a book of 
            <lb xml:id="l76"/>all the gold &amp; silver molte<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add> &amp; of the allay put into it.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par10">The <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>eigher &amp; Teller weighs all the gold &amp; silver brought 
            <lb xml:id="l77"/>into the Office of Receipt either before or after coynage &amp; when 
            <lb xml:id="l78"/>tis requisite he tells it there. He weighs <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">the</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="over">go</del><add place="over" indicator="no">si</add>l<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">v</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">er</add> moneys</add> by journeys of 60<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> 
            <lb xml:id="l79"/>weight<choice><orig> </orig><reg/></choice><del type="strikethrough">in a journey</del>, &amp; 
            <del type="strikethrough">again by <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="6"/></del> but this second weighing is incon<lb xml:id="l80"/>sistent w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture.</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the gold by journeys of 15<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> weight<choice><orig> </orig><reg/></choice><del type="strikethrough">in the journey</del>.</add></p>

        <p xml:id="par11">The Kings Clerk registers the papers <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> pass between the 
            <lb xml:id="l81"/>Treasury &amp; the Mint. Also he &amp; the Warden &amp; Controller (by 
            <lb xml:id="l82"/>their Clerks) or two of them in behalf of the King rate &amp; 
            <lb xml:id="l83"/>standard all the gold &amp; silver brought into the Mint &amp; examin 
            <lb xml:id="l84"/>the Pots set out by the Master &amp; enter these accounts in Day <lb xml:id="l85"/>books, Leger-books &amp; Melting books.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par12">The Clerk of the irons is at present the same person 
            <lb xml:id="l86"/>with <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add>e Surveyor of the meltings. He keeps an account of 
            <lb xml:id="l87"/>all the Dyes made &amp; hardened by the Smith, &amp; when they are 
            <lb xml:id="l88"/>worn out sees them defaced in the presence of the Warden 
            <lb xml:id="l89"/>Master &amp; Controller. He now keeps an account of all 
            <lb xml:id="l90"/>the Dyes that are sunck &amp; for that end has one of the keys 
            <lb xml:id="l91"/>to the great Press &amp; to the box of Punc<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>eons.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par13">There are also two Auditors who yearly examin &amp; allow <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 
            <lb xml:id="l92"/>accounts of the Warden &amp; Master &amp; the Controllment Roll,
