    <p xml:id="par1">In the Indenture made in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> year of Rich III Iuly 20 <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Rob<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Backen<lb xml:id="l1"/>bury Esq<choice><orig></orig><reg>quire</reg></choice> are these words. And f<choice><unclear reason="blotDel">our</unclear><unclear reason="blotDel">ive</unclear></choice> covenants abovesaid well &amp; truly to be held <lb xml:id="l2"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">&amp;</add> performed <del type="cancelled">&amp; kept</del> on the partie of the said Maister and that he shall bear <lb xml:id="l3"/>him towards <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> said soveraign Lord the King &amp; his people in the same Office <lb xml:id="l4"/>well &amp; covenably &amp; that he shall make gree to the King the said Master <lb xml:id="l5"/>hath made bodily Oath afore <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> said Soveraign Lord the King in his Chan<lb xml:id="l6"/>chery, &amp; bindeth him<del type="cancelled">self</del> his heires &amp; Executors to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Soveraign <lb xml:id="l7"/>Lord the king by these p<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>re</reg></choice>sents.     <p xml:id="par2">The like clause word for word is in the Indenture made 23 Feb. in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 11<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> <lb xml:id="l20"/>year of Edward <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> between <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King &amp; William Lord Hastings, excepting <lb xml:id="l21"/>that there were seven sureties each in 100<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. <add place="inline interlinear" indicator="no"> The like clause in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Inden<lb xml:id="l22"/>ture made 4 Nov. 1 Hen 6 to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Gyles Dawbency, there being 5 sureties for 500<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>.</add></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par3">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture 16 May in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 24<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> year of Hen. 8, <del type="strikethrough">it is said that <lb xml:id="l23"/>the Master</del> between <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> one part &amp; <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Martin Bowes &amp; Ralph Rowlet <lb xml:id="l24"/>Es<choice><orig></orig><reg>quire</reg></choice> on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other part it is said that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> masters <del type="strikethrough">hath</del> have found sureties or <lb xml:id="l25"/>Burrows afore <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King to make gree to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Importer, but the summ is not <lb xml:id="l26"/>named.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">The like clause is in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture made 16 Feb. 2 Edw. 6 to Tilsworth <lb xml:id="l27"/>for Canterbury. Tis said the Master hath found sureties but the summ <lb xml:id="l28"/>is not named.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par5">The like clause is in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture made <unclear reason="hand">15</unclear> Apr An 1 Edw 6 to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l29"/>Martin Bowes &amp; f<del type="over">our</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ive</add> others <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add>or <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Tower. Tis said that they have <lb xml:id="l30"/>found sureties but the summ is not named.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par6">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <add place="inline" indicator="no">I</add><del type="over">in</del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>denture made 11 <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">Iu</add>ne An 7 Edw 6, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">made to Egerton,</add> the Oath is mentioned <lb xml:id="l31"/>but I find now mention of Sureties.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par7">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture made 2<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">0</add><hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Aug. An 1 Mariæ ot Tho Egerton Tho Stanley <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>ill <lb xml:id="l32"/>Billingsley &amp; <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Mundes there is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> like clause. Tis said they have found  Sureties <lb xml:id="l33"/>for making gree to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> M<del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>rchant but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> summ is not named.</p>

An 3 Eliz. to Tho Fleetwood Esq<choice><orig></orig><reg>quire</reg></choice><add place="inline" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="cancelled">&amp; other</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">tis said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice></add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l34"/>said <del type="strikethrough">Tho Fleetwood</del> That <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add>or more surety to make gree to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen &amp; to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l35"/>parties of that that belongeth to them of moneys <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he shall receive by <lb xml:id="l36"/>&amp; in manner as is aforesaid while he shall be in the said Office.     Thomas Fleetwood hath bound himself his heirs &amp; E<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">xe</add>cutors to our said <lb xml:id="l37"/>Soveraign Lady <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen in her Chancery in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> summ of five hundred <lb xml:id="l38"/>pounds &amp; also hath found Burrow<gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/>es &amp; Sureties afore <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Soveraign <lb xml:id="l39"/>Lady <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen in her chancery aforesaid in the summ of other five <lb xml:id="l40"/>hundred pounds that upon pain thereof he shall make gree to the Queens <lb xml:id="l41"/>Highness &amp; to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> parties as is aforesaid.</p>

    <p xml:id="par10">In the Indenture made the first of March An. 37 Edw. 3 tis mentioend <lb xml:id="l53"/>that Henry de Brisele had given surties in 100<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">0</add> marks for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint at P<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ris.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par11">In the Indenture made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 20<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> May An 46 Edw 3 <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">tis mentioned that</add> Berdet de Malepitys <lb xml:id="l54"/>had found sureties <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">to</unclear></del> in 600<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> to make gree to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Merchant.</p>
