    <p xml:id="par9">I <choice><sic>beleive</sic><corr>believe</corr></choice> it is not unknown to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> Lordship, that as my Genius <lb xml:id="l11"/>leads me to the study of Medals, so I have omitted no opportunity <del type="cancelled">to</del> <lb xml:id="l12"/>either in this or the late Reign, to commit the memory of all consider<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l13"/>able Postages to Posterity, by such Designs by way of Medal as I have <lb xml:id="l14"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">been</add> Able to contrive; And which have been honour'd <del type="over">w</del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>ith the acceptance <lb xml:id="l15"/>of most of the Nobility, as well as the late, and her Present <lb xml:id="l16"/>Majesty. The principal motive to which, next to that I thought <lb xml:id="l17"/>it my Duty, has been the hope I have had that when any opper<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l18"/>tunity should offer me a prospect of some Post, wherein by my <lb xml:id="l19"/>Talent this Way I might reasonably suppose my <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add>elf a fully <lb xml:id="l20"/>qualified as any other I might also find the favour of being <lb xml:id="l21"/>recommended by some Noble Person whose interest should be <lb xml:id="l22"/>Equal &amp; that your Lordship has. I humbly presume therefore <lb xml:id="l23"/>My Lord, that this Iuncture presents me with the fairest <lb xml:id="l24"/>Opportunity possible to address my self to your Lordship, <lb xml:id="l25"/>as that Person, to recommend me (if your Lordship on due <lb xml:id="l26"/>consideration shall think fitt he do me that honour) to the Place <lb xml:id="l27"/>vacant by the Death of Captain Harris. But if your <lb xml:id="l28"/>Lordship is not at present so well convinc'd as I would wish <lb xml:id="l29"/>of what I Offer, I humbly Intreat your Lordship however to <lb xml:id="l30"/>suspend any Grant, till I may have Time to bring myself so <lb xml:id="l31"/>well recommended to your Lordship, that it may be thought <lb xml:id="l32"/>now is more fittly qualified, or inclin'd to the business <lb xml:id="l33"/>that Post requires, than</p>

    <p rend="center" xml:id="par19"><hi rend="large">The Case of Coll<hi rend="superscript">o</hi>. W<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>. Parsons &amp;c.</hi></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par20">That being a young Brother, &amp; Desirous to Raise his Fortune by a Military Employ, He bought a Cornetts Co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ission in Ireland in 1680, <lb xml:id="l36"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> through a Violent &amp; Chargeable Illnesse of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Countrey-Distemper, he was Obliged (although <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> great Losse) to Part with soon after; That in 1682 <lb xml:id="l37"/>He bought a Colours in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first <choice><abbr>Regm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Regment</expan></choice> of Guards, Co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>anded by his Grace <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Duke of Grafton, &amp; a Lieutenancy likewise in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same Year; And in 1684, <lb xml:id="l38"/>having Married a Fortune of 1700<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">ll</hi></hi>, He bought a Company. Which upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> late Happy Revolution (being at Portsmouth on Duty, &amp; Mis-represented <lb xml:id="l39"/>to his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">tie</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestie</expan></choice> in his Absence) was taken from him, And he thereby left wholy Destitute of any Income or Provision to Support Himself &amp; Family; <lb xml:id="l40"/>deeply Involved in Debts on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Companies <choice><abbr>Acc<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Account</expan></choice> &amp; forced to apply himself to a Trade (though otherwise Educated) for a present subsistance.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par21">That his Case being made known to his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">tie</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestie</expan></choice> by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Duke of Grafton, He was sometime after made a Land Survey<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</orig><reg>or</reg></choice> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Custome-House; <lb xml:id="l41"/>butt his Lamenesse encreasing through <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> constant Attendance on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Keys, &amp; finding himself unable to perform <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Duty required, He Exchanged <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same <lb xml:id="l42"/>(in Respect only to their <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> Service) for a Kings Wayters-Place to be acted by Deputy, although a Place of scarce one third <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Yearly Value.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par22">That although <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> this small Income &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Blessing of Gold on his Industry &amp; Ingenuity, he has hitherto (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> great Difficulties_ maintained himself, <lb xml:id="l43"/>and Paid 300<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">ll</hi></hi> &amp; upwards (having been often Arrested for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Same) on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Companies <choice><abbr>Acc<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Account</expan></choice>; Yet since no Prospect can be had in such an Employ, either of <lb xml:id="l44"/>Raising a Provision for a Wife (whose Fortune was wholy Expended on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>and) or for Children, who in Case of his Death must be Reduced to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> last Extremities;</p>

    <p xml:id="par23">And since his 16 Years Experience (not without some Success too in the very Improvement) of the Mechanicks, and more Particularly <lb xml:id="l45"/>in that part Relating to the Engraving of Seals Medalls &amp;cta may have fitly Qualified him to succeed the late <choice><abbr>Cap<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>:</abbr><expan>Captain</expan></choice> Harris <lb xml:id="l46"/>in the Employment of Engraver to her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> It is most <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">H</add>umbly Hoped he may have your <choice><abbr>Ld<hi rend="overline">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> Favour in the same</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par24">Wherein if he should be thought Worthy, as he is very Desirous of being again Employed in the service of the Crown, <lb xml:id="l47"/>He will not only very Faithfully Performe the Trust Reposed in him, but will also Contribute as much as in him lies <lb xml:id="l48"/>towards the father Improvement of the Coinage of England.</p>

    <p xml:id="par28"><hi rend="large">That</hi> Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>:</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> by Order of the Lords <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>:</abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> of the Treasury, succeeded M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l50"/><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Rotier in Engraving the Puncheons and Dyes for the Coinage at the Tower &amp; five <lb xml:id="l51"/>Country Mints, and hath performed the service of Graver to the Mint or Mints, under M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <lb xml:id="l52"/>Harris for seaven Yeares last past, and hopes he hath given good satisfaction therein.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par29"><hi rend="large">That</hi> by a Contract between the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>: Harris &amp; your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>;</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> approved of <lb xml:id="l53"/>by the then Lords <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>:</abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> of the Treasury, your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r's</hi>:</abbr><expan>Petitioner's</expan></choice> salary was paid by the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Harris, &amp; is <lb xml:id="l54"/>now ceased by his death, and you <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r's</hi>:</abbr><expan>Petitioner's</expan></choice> place become void; And your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>:</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> is informed, That <lb xml:id="l55"/>by a Clause in the new Indenture of the Mint, the Graver's salary is also determined in order <lb xml:id="l56"/>to a new Settlement of the Place</p>
