<p xml:id="par3"><hi rend="large">Attending</hi> my <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> Chancellour of Scotland on thursday last about the <lb xml:id="l2"/>Mint at Edinborough, his <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> proposed to us to lay before your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> a Memorial <lb xml:id="l3"/>concerning some things to be considered by the Committee of Council <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is to sit to day <lb xml:id="l4"/>upon the affairs of Scotland.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par4">His <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> is considering whether the Pix of that Mint may not be still tried before <lb xml:id="l5"/>her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi></abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> Council in Scotland as formerly. And if so, We are humbly of opinion that <lb xml:id="l6"/><choice><sic>that</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> in conformity to the Act of Vnion there may be made seven indented Trial pieces <lb xml:id="l7"/>of Crown gold &amp; seven of standard silver; two of each metal to be kept in the <lb xml:id="l8"/>two Treasuries to try the Pixes of the two Mints; two of each for the Wardens of <lb xml:id="l9"/>the two Mints to try the moneys before delivery, &amp; to decide questions between the <lb xml:id="l10"/>Master &amp; Importer about the fineness of the bullion; two of each for the Masters of <lb xml:id="l11"/>the two Mints to make the moneys by, &amp; one of each for the Wardens &amp; Com<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l12"/>pany of Goldsmiths to try their plate &amp; manufactures of gold &amp; silver. It will <lb xml:id="l13"/>be also convenient that a Pile of standard Troy weights be made for the Trea<lb xml:id="l14"/>sury in Scotland by the Deputy Chamberlains of the Exchequer, if it be not already <lb xml:id="l15"/>done. But if both Pixes be tried by the original standard weights at Westminster, <lb xml:id="l16"/>six Trial pieces will be sufficient</p>
    
<p xml:id="par5">The Indenture of the Mint directs that two Piles of standard Troy weights be <lb xml:id="l17"/>made by the Warden of the Mint &amp; one of them delivered to the General of the Mint <lb xml:id="l18"/>in Scotland. They may be printed like the weights sent to the Corporations &amp; in <lb xml:id="l19"/>the absence of the General delivered to your Lordships order.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par6">For setting the coynage speedily on foot in that Mint, her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> may please to <lb xml:id="l20"/>issue out her Warrant to the General &amp; other Officers with a copy of the Indenture <lb xml:id="l21"/>of the Mint in the Tower annexed to it, authorising <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; requiring</add> them to act <del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">un</add>der those <lb xml:id="l22"/>Rules there set down <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> relate to their several Offices, &amp; particularly that the <lb xml:id="l23"/>Master coyn all the moneys of the weight &amp; fineness &amp; within the remed<del type="over">y</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ies</add> <lb xml:id="l24"/>there set down &amp; take care that the several pieces be not lighter then their coun<lb xml:id="l25"/>terpoises, &amp; that the Warden &amp; Counter-warden survey &amp; Che<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice> the proceedings of <lb xml:id="l26"/>all the other Officers &amp; Ministers &amp; see that the moneys be well &amp; duly coyned in <lb xml:id="l27"/>all respects &amp; that an account be kept of the Dyes &amp; Puncheons.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par7">Another Warrant may be directed to the Master of that Mint authorising <lb xml:id="l28"/>him to command the Graver to make Puncheons &amp; Dyes for coyning the money of the <lb xml:id="l29"/>same form with the money coyned in the Tower of London, &amp; to use such master <lb xml:id="l30"/>Puncheons as shall be sent him from the Tower untill the Puncheons made by him <lb xml:id="l31"/>self shall be approved by the Officers of that Mint, &amp; to set the letter E (the first <lb xml:id="l32"/>letter of the name of the City of Edinborough) <del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>r such other mark as shall be appointed <lb xml:id="l33"/>under her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi></abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> effigies, as in the specimens of Dyes <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> will be sent him from <lb xml:id="l34"/>the Tower, that the money of the two Mints may thereby distinguished.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par8">An Instrument may be drawn up at any time hereafter, either in the <lb xml:id="l35"/>form of an Indenture between her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> &amp; the Master of that Mint, or in the <lb xml:id="l36"/>form of a Warrant, prescribing the duty of every Officer in particular.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par9">In the late recoinage of the hammered moneys in England, one tenth part <lb xml:id="l37"/>of the silver was coyned into sixpences &amp; four tenths into shillings; &amp; the same <lb xml:id="l38"/>proportion may be prescribed in one of the Warrants above mentioned, if it be thought fit.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par10">The Gravers tell us that Puncheons &amp; two pair of Dyes for shillings with the new <lb xml:id="l39"/>arms, will be ready to be sent to Edinborough within a fortnight. And while they are coyn<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l40"/>ing shillings in that Mint, there may be Puncheons made for coyning other money. For it <lb xml:id="l41"/>may be convenient to send them the first Puncheons from hence that the money of both <lb xml:id="l42"/>Mints may be exactly alike. And if more Puncheons be at any time desired we are ready
