<p>(a) [c. November 1708.] Newton to Mountague. Holograph original. Summary of the financial arrangements of the Edinburgh Mint, with two queries as to whether the commissioners can be paid out of pre-Union Scottish coinage duty, and who should give authority for such payment.</p>
<p>(b) 7 December 1708. Mountague to Newton (in Mountague's hand). The commissioners' fees should be met from the Equivalent, not coinage duty; the amount payable should be determined by the Treasurer, and authority for the release of this sum given by the Commissioners for the Equivalent..</p>

    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1"><handShift new="#in" scribe="Isaac_Newton"/>The Importer delivers bullion in Ingots by weight &amp; <lb xml:id="l1"/>assay to the Master of Her Majesties Mint to be <lb xml:id="l2"/>coined, and if it be not in Ingots he reduces it into <lb xml:id="l3"/><del type="cancelled">into</del> Ingots at his own charge before the Master can <lb xml:id="l4"/>receive it by weight &amp; assay upon his Note, &amp; the <lb xml:id="l5"/>charge of coinage is then born out of the coinage <lb xml:id="l6"/>Duty. The money of Scotland is delivered by the <lb xml:id="l7"/>people to the Bank of Scotland &amp; by the Bank <lb xml:id="l8"/>to three Commissioners who tell it, see it melted into <lb xml:id="l9"/>Ingots, &amp; deliver the Ingots by weight &amp; assay to the <lb xml:id="l10"/>Master of that Mint to be coined, &amp; then certify <lb xml:id="l11"/>the deficiency, &amp; the Bank is paid out of the <lb xml:id="l12"/>Equivalent for their service.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2">Quære 1. May the three Commissioners be paid <lb xml:id="l13"/>for their service, out of the Coinag<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> Duty of that <lb xml:id="l14"/>Mint collected before the Vnion, or what is the proper <lb xml:id="l15"/>Fund out of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they are to be paid?</p>
