Document (a) printed in NC, 4: 539. The Mint's letter to the Treasury recommending a payment of £60, dated 1 June 1709, is in PRO, Mint 1/8, p. 156. [NC gives 1 June as the date of (a), but it is clearly later and probably a reply to MINT00425 (Mint 19/3/123).]

(a) [After 28 June 1709?] Newton to Seafield. Holograph draft. The London Mint officers have recommended a £60 bonus for Millar and payment of the Scottish commissioners' outstanding fees, but Newton does not know whether the Treasurer has seen their reports yet.

(b) [Summer 1709?] Newton [to Seafield?]. Holograph draft. Suggests the addressee should approach the Treasurer, ideally through the Secretary of State, as soon as the summer vacation is over, requesting clear directives about the settlement of finances at the Edinburgh Mint.

I received your LordpsLordships Letter abo & are the settling& about &a settlemtsettlement ofabout the settled of ingabout curing ingabout getting a settlement of the yetheyethe revenues ofwchwhich will from time to time grow due to her MatiesMajesties Mint at Edinburght being [so ytthat salaries & other expenses of the Maint may be duely paid for yethe future,] And the same being a thing of consequence: I am humbly of opinion that yethe properest method to get it still done method duly paidit done would be for yoryour LordpLordship to lay a Memorial before my Lord H.High Treasurer about it so soon as this Vacation time is over, & myhis LpLordship The (who is now in the country) returns to London to stay do business, wchwhich may be about the end of October, or beginnin & I beleive that it may not be amiss for yoryour LordpLordship to service send the Memorial to the yoethe Secretary of state & desire him to lay it before my Lord Treasurer in yoryour LordpsLordships name. Last summer the Officers of this Mint last made a report upon

Soon after yoryour LordpLordship left London the Officers of this Mint made report to my Lord Treasurer upon the petition of Th the Queens Clerk for allowing him 60li for his pains in assisting the three CommrsCommissioners in receiving the old money to be recoined. And finding a reference written upon the Moneyers petition (wchwhich I was not aware of when I saw your LordpLordship last, We have made a report upon that Petition also; the And shallwchwhich Report amounted only to this; that the summs of money for wchwhich they petitioned, were due to them but not yet paid by reason that Mr Allardes had not yet received moneys from yethe government sufficient for this purpose. And that of the 9d per pound weight wchwhich was due to them for coinage, eight pence was due from Mr Allardes out of his allowance, & one penny was properly to be allowed by her MatyMajesty as is done in the Mint in yethe Tower of London. I do not yet know whether these Reports have been yet laid before his LordpLordshipmy Lord Treasurer, because it is now during this vacation time his LordpLordship is seldome in London. I am
