                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">To the <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> the Knights Citizens &amp; Burgesses in <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> assembled <lb type="intentional" xml:id="l1"/>the humble Petition of William Chaloner Gent. Sheweth</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">That <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> did in the last sessions of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice><add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">1</hi></add> discover several <lb xml:id="l2"/>abuses committed in the Mint &amp;<add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">2</hi></add> shewed by what methods false money wa<del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add> <lb xml:id="l3"/>coyned,<add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">3</hi></add> that laws might more effectually be made <del type="strikethrough">against</del> to prevent the same <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp;<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del></add> severall Acts were accordingly made against it, &amp;<add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">4</hi></add> then some of the Mint <lb xml:id="l5"/>threatned by some means to prosecute him &amp; take away his life <lb xml:id="l6"/>before the next sessions of Parliament,<add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">5</hi></add> telling him that this <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l7"/>House had no power to meddle with the affairs of the Mint. therefore <lb xml:id="l8"/>they would not obey the Order made by a Committee of this <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> House</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">That <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Committee<add place="supralinear" indicator="no">5</add> promised <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> he should suffer no dam<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l9"/>mage for his dis<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>overies about the Mint &amp; by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> directions of this <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/>House a member thereof did represent <del type="over">the</del><add place="over" indicator="no">hi</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add> case to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King &amp; his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l11"/>was pleased to say that he should suffer no dammage for the said <lb xml:id="l12"/>matters, yet they committed him to Newgate &amp; kept him in Irons <lb xml:id="l13"/>for seven weeks alledging that he had abused the Mint in <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> &amp; <lb xml:id="l14"/>they did falsly &amp; illegally preferr a bill of <choice><abbr>Indictm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Indictment</expan></choice> against him <lb xml:id="l15"/>but could bring no evidence against him to prove it altho they <lb xml:id="l16"/>used strange methods to procure something<add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> <del type="cancelled">against</del> For many <lb xml:id="l17"/>witnesses have made oath before a Iudge of the Kings Bench &amp; <lb xml:id="l18"/>some Iustices of <del type="cancelled">the</del> peace, that some of the Mint have imployed <lb xml:id="l19"/>&amp; given Privilege to several persons to coyn false money <choice><sic>(</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice>who <lb xml:id="l20"/>put it away among the subjects for good <choice><sic>(</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice>all which was done <lb xml:id="l21"/>with an intent to draw him into coyning to take his life away <lb xml:id="l22"/>&amp; the better to effect the same they allowed the said persons money <lb xml:id="l23"/>from time to time to buy tools &amp; to carry on the said conspiracy <lb xml:id="l24"/>against <del type="over"><supplied reason="illgblDel" cert="low">the</supplied></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice></add> <del type="cancelled">Kings</del> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> life. But all their endeavours could not <lb xml:id="l25"/>get him to be concerned in coyning, but on the contrary he <lb xml:id="l26"/>hath made it his business for a considerable time past to find out <lb xml:id="l27"/>the Treasons &amp; Conspiracies against the King &amp; Kingdome &amp; <lb xml:id="l28"/>thereby hath discovered many who have been convicted for the <lb xml:id="l29"/>same, &amp; was this year writing a book of the present state of <lb xml:id="l30"/>the Mint &amp; the defects thereof (as he promised the said <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ee</hi></abbr><expan>Committee</expan></choice>) <lb xml:id="l31"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he hoped would have been of service to the publick. But <lb xml:id="l32"/>the Mint having notice of it they committed him to <supplied reason="blotDel">Newgate</supplied> Prison <lb xml:id="l33"/>&amp; so prevented him from doing it. All <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> can be proved if this <lb xml:id="l34"/><choice><abbr>honble</abbr><expan>honourable</expan></choice> <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">h</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">H</add>ouse is pleased to require it.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">That <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> is utterly ruined by his endeavours to serve the King <lb xml:id="l35"/>&amp; Kingdom &amp; by his discoveries against the Mint to this <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> House</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5"><choice><abbr>Yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> therefore most humbly plays that this <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> House will <lb xml:id="l36"/>be pleased to consider his great sufferings &amp; ruined condition as <lb xml:id="l37"/>being incapable of providing for himself &amp; family by what he <lb xml:id="l38"/>intended for the service of the Publick &amp; grant him such redress <lb xml:id="l39"/>as shall seem best in <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> Honours great Wisdom &amp; Iustice</p>
