    <p xml:id="par2">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner before a Committee of the last sessions of Parliament <lb xml:id="l1"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">1</hi></add>laboured to accuse &amp; vilify the Mint &amp;<add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">2</hi></add> approve himself a more skilfull <lb xml:id="l2"/>coyner then they<add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">3</hi></add> that <del type="over">th</del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>e might be made their Supervisor &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">then</add> supply <lb xml:id="l3"/>Tho. Holloway <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">coyning</del> Tools out of the Tower to counterfeit his <lb xml:id="l4"/>own milled money by a way <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he then concealed from that <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l5"/>Committee<add place="inline" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="blockStrikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">&amp;</unclear> so funn the Parliament as he <del type="strikethrough">then</del> boasted <del type="cancelled">at the <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> in <unclear reason="del" cert="low">searcht</unclear></del><add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add></del><add place="supralinear interlinear lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; accordingly he</del> boast<del type="strikethrough">ed</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><unclear reason="hand">or <del type="strikethrough">in</del></unclear> get his confidents</add> that he would fun the Parliament as he had <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">formerly</add> done <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l6"/>king <del type="strikethrough">before</del></add> <lb xml:id="l7"/>And while he was upon this designe I gave <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Chairman of that <lb xml:id="l8"/><choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ee</hi></abbr><expan>Committee</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">severall he<unclear reason="del" cert="low">a</unclear>ds for a</del> minutes for a new Act of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l9"/>against coyners, &amp; the Act was afterwards drawn up by some of the <lb xml:id="l10"/>Iudges &amp; Officers of the Mint &amp; brought into the House of Lords<del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no"> w</add><add place="inline" indicator="no"><choice><abbr><hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>ith</expan></choice></add><add place="lineBeginning infralinear" indicator="no">out M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloners assistance.</add></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par3"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">4</add>About the end of that Sessions M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale (as I have heard) moved <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l11"/>House to give leave that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner might be prosecuted for taxing <lb xml:id="l12"/>the Mint <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> coyning <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">great quantities of</add> false money but I do not know that there <lb xml:id="l13"/>was any designe or menace to prosecute him for any thing else then <lb xml:id="l14"/>that calumny, &amp; much less to take away his life. <add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">4</hi></add>Nor did I <lb xml:id="l15"/>ever heare any pretend that the <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> House of Commons had no <lb xml:id="l16"/>power to meddle <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the Affairs of the Mint or that their <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ee</hi></abbr><expan>Committee</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l17"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> then sat had not all the power <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the House thought fit to <lb xml:id="l18"/>grant them: but when the <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ee</hi></abbr><expan>Committee</expan></choice> sent an order to me about pre<lb xml:id="l19"/>paring an Edger for M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner to grave new mony, I told M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l20"/>Chaloner that in regard of an oath that I had taken I could <lb xml:id="l21"/>not safely carry him to the workm<del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>n of the Mint about it, but <lb xml:id="l22"/>if he would give me directions I would take care of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> matter <lb xml:id="l23"/>But M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner refusing to give me directions, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as he ought to have done by that Order</add> I directed the <lb xml:id="l24"/>workmen <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">(without him)</add> to grave some half crowns shillings &amp; sixpences <del type="strikethrough">without <lb xml:id="l25"/>him</del> &amp; carried them to the <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ee</hi></abbr><expan>Committee</expan></choice>.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">That his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> was moved in behalf of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner by order <lb xml:id="l26"/>of this <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi></abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> House I did not heare <del type="strikethrough">any sillable</del> till after I had <lb xml:id="l27"/>committed him: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I <del type="strikethrough">did on this occasion</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">was <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">then</unclear> <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/>tly</del> moved to do not for any thing <add place="supralinear interlinear lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">he had</add> done before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ee</hi></abbr><expan>Committee</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l28"/>but</add> because he stood charged <lb xml:id="l29"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">new</add> designes of counterfeiting <del type="strikethrough">both</del> <del type="over">b</del><add place="over" indicator="no">B</add>ills &amp; money <add place="supralinear interlinear lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">forreign &amp; domestick, since the <lb xml:id="l30"/>rising of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> sessions &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> coyning very greate summs of <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">gold</unclear> before<choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add>. And particularly <lb xml:id="l31"/>upon the rising of the last Sessions of Parliament he <del type="strikethrough">directed</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">advised</add> Tho. <lb xml:id="l32"/>Holloway to take a house in the Country convenient for coyning <lb xml:id="l33"/>&amp; agreed with him that he should find materials &amp; teach Hollo<lb xml:id="l34"/>way to coyn &amp; Holloway &amp; his brother <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn should coyn together <lb xml:id="l35"/>at <del type="cancelled">Egham</del> that house &amp; they three should <choice><sic>should</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> share the <lb xml:id="l36"/>money so made. And accordingly Tho. Holloway did take a house <lb xml:id="l37"/>at Egham in Surrey &amp; Chaloner did make some progress in <lb xml:id="l38"/>teaching him &amp; his brother &amp; in preparing coyning tools. And for <lb xml:id="l39"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">doing</add> this <add place="supralinear interlinear lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; coyning <del type="strikethrough">I did order that he should be <unclear reason="blotDel">I</unclear>ndicted</del> But the principal witness withdrew &amp; fled <lb xml:id="l40"/>into Scotland &amp; the Indictment <del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>e<del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">in</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">g</add> drawn wrong <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> two others of the Witnesses were after<lb xml:id="l41"/><add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">wards</add> drawn off to swaer against <del type="strikethrough">the Indictment</del> it</add> &amp; not for abusing the Mint <del type="strikethrough">he was prosecuted but the Indictment <lb xml:id="l42"/>was drawn wrong &amp; one of the Witnesses being sent into Scotland, two others were drawn off to swear against the Indictment</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">he was <del type="strikethrough">prosecuted</del> committed &amp; prosecuted</add> &amp; against the <lb xml:id="l43"/>Mint; although by swearing on both sides their credit <del type="strikethrough">be diminished</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">fell</add> 
        <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">&amp;</fw><fw type="pag" place="bottomLeft" hand="#unknown">499</fw><fw type="pag" place="bottomRight" hand="#unknown1">212</fw><pb xml:id="p499v" n="499v"/>&amp; to draw off the Kings Witnesses &amp; swear them against the King <lb xml:id="l44"/><del type="strikethrough">be a misdemeanour because<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">which</del></add> it</del> gra<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">v</add>ells prosecutions &amp; renders it <lb xml:id="l45"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">very</del></add> dangerous for any man to prosecute<unclear reason="hand"><del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">.</add></unclear> <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">&amp; is therefore accounted a misdemeanour</add></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par5"><del type="blockStrikethrough">But that any of the Mint have given privilege to coyn <lb xml:id="l46"/>false money with intent to draw in M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner to coyn, or <lb xml:id="l47"/>given any direction to draw him in to coyn or allowed money to <lb xml:id="l48"/>buy coyning tools or conspired against him I do not know no <lb xml:id="l49"/>beleive</del></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par6">There are divers witnesses that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaloner last summer <lb xml:id="l50"/>was forward to coyn &amp; <del type="strikethrough">that any</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">I do not know or believe <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> any privilege or</add> direction was given <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by any of the Mint</add> to draw him <lb xml:id="l51"/>in <del type="cancelled">I do not <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">or to do any thing</add><del type="strikethrough">for privileges to coyn false money <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> intention to <lb xml:id="l52"/>draw him in</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">was</unclear></del> for that purpose</add> or <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">that any</add> conspiracy <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">was</add> made against him or <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">any</add> money given <lb xml:id="l53"/>to buy coyning tools. <del type="strikethrough">I do not know nor believe</del> Neither can I <lb xml:id="l54"/>find that he did ever make it his business to find out any <lb xml:id="l55"/>treasons &amp; conspiracies against the King &amp; Kingdom but what <lb xml:id="l56"/>were of his own contriving <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as in the case of the Printers</add>. And as for his <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">intended</add> book about the <lb xml:id="l57"/>defects of the Mint, I heard nothing of it till I saw it mentioned <lb xml:id="l58"/>in his printed case &amp; therefore did not committ him for that <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">book</add> <lb xml:id="l59"/><del type="strikethrough">But</del> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>hen I had committed him he told me he had written a <lb xml:id="l60"/>book about preventing the counterfeiting of Exchequer Bills &amp; <lb xml:id="l61"/>offered to let me see it, but said nothing of an book <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>ntended about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par7">If therefore he be ruined <gap reason="blotDel" unit="words" extent="1"/> tis by his endeavouring <lb xml:id="l62"/>not to serve the King &amp; Government as he pretends but to coyn <lb xml:id="l63"/>false money. And if he would but let the money &amp; Government <lb xml:id="l64"/>alone &amp; return to his trade of Ia<del type="cancelled">p</del>panning, he is not so far <lb xml:id="l65"/>ruined but that he might <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">still</add> live as well as he did <del type="strikethrough">before</del><add place="supralinear lineEnd" indicator="yes">seven years ago when</add> he <lb xml:id="l66"/>left off that trade &amp; raised himself by coyning.</p>
