    <p rend="center" xml:id="par2"><hi rend="large">The humble Peti<choice><orig>c</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of Iacob Wallis</hi></p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3"><hi rend="larger">Humbly Sheweth</hi></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4"><hi rend="large">That</hi> Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> having by great Thought and Application and at his own <lb xml:id="l1"/>Charges attained to the art of making Hooks and Chains for Watches farr exceeding all made <lb xml:id="l2"/>by any other person before or since, being wrought by a Hand Wedge Press, invented solely by <lb xml:id="l3"/>Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> but in no respect like unto those used in Coinage either in form or working, and used <lb xml:id="l4"/>by him and his Apprentices only in making the said Hooks and Chains And the same being so <lb xml:id="l5"/>generally received and approved of for their Curiosity and Vse by Persons of Quality back <lb xml:id="l6"/>in England and Foreign parts, whither they have been exported Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> received <lb xml:id="l7"/>Encouragement therein, and did thereupon comfortably subsist himself and Family.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par5"><hi rend="large">That</hi> by two severall Acts of Parliament made in the 7<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. and 8<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>, and 8<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> and 9<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. <lb xml:id="l8"/>years of his now <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> reigne (both subsequent to Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> said Invention) It is (in effect) <lb xml:id="l9"/>prohibited to any person whatsoever (other than the Officers of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> Mints) to have in their <lb xml:id="l10"/>Custody any Press or other Tools therein named that might be used for Coinage And it is <lb xml:id="l11"/>therein directed to bring all such Tools into his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> Mint under very great Penaltyes <lb xml:id="l12"/>(Except such as Your <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> should permit and give leave to be used<choice><orig/><reg><supplied reason="omitted">)</supplied></reg></choice>.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par6"><hi rend="large">That</hi> upon Notice of the said Acts of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> And in obedience thereunto And for <lb xml:id="l13"/>avoiding all Occasion of O<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ff</add>ence, and not that Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> had any Apprehension that his said <lb xml:id="l14"/>Press or Engine was any way practicable for Coinage, Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> did voluntarily carry the same <lb xml:id="l15"/>into the Mint, where the same being viewed by the Officers of the Mint and found unfit for Coinage <lb xml:id="l16"/>was redelivered back to Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> upon his giving Bond with Security to redeliver into the <lb xml:id="l17"/>Mint the said Press when demanded.</p>
    
    <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par7"><hi rend="large">But now so it is</hi> May it please Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> that Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> said Engine is <lb xml:id="l18"/>now lately called in and delivered to the Mint upon the occasion of some Petition <lb xml:id="l19"/>of one Daniel Critchlow lately presented to Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> whereby Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> is <lb xml:id="l20"/>now wholly deprived of the use thereof for the carrying on his said honest Calling <lb xml:id="l21"/>for the Maintenance of himself and Family and Imployment of his Servants.</p>
    
    <p rend="indent15" xml:id="par8"><hi rend="larger">Wherefore</hi> Your <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> humbly lays himself at Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l22"/>feet And in as much as his said Press or Engine was Invented and Vsed befor<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> <lb xml:id="l23"/>either of the said Acts of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> were in being, and was his own Invention <lb xml:id="l24"/>and therefore justly (as Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> humbly conceives) intitled to have the sole <lb xml:id="l25"/>Vse and benefit thereof, And th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>refore humbly hopes that h<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> shall not <lb xml:id="l26"/>suffer by so profitable an Invention by being deemed a President for Evill <lb xml:id="l27"/>designed people And for that also as the said Engine hath been found by the <lb xml:id="l28"/>Officers of the Mint to be Impracticable for Coinage, and was therefore <lb xml:id="l29"/>delivered out with permission to Work therewith, Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> humbly <lb xml:id="l30"/>prayeth that Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> will be pleased to Order his said Press or Engine <lb xml:id="l31"/>to be restored to him And upon Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> giving such Security as Your <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l32"/>shall require to be pleased to Authorize or permit him (in such sort as <lb xml:id="l33"/>Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> shall think fit) to Vse the same according to the Power and <lb xml:id="l34"/>Authority given Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> by the said Actrs of Parliament.
