                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1"><hi rend="largest">An Account</hi> <lb type="intentional" xml:id="l1"/><hi rend="large">of the new Regulation of her Majesty's Mint at Edinburgh <lb xml:id="l2"/><hi rend="larger">H</hi>umbly laid before the Right <choice><abbr>Hon<hi rend="superscript">ble</hi>:</abbr><expan>Honourable</expan></choice> the Earl of Godolphin <lb xml:id="l3"/>Lord high Treasurer of Great Brittain.</hi> <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2"><hi rend="largest">I</hi>n Obedience to her Majestys Commands in a Warrant dated, 12<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Iuly 1707, Doctor Gregory took <lb xml:id="l4"/>Iourney to Scotland, 21 Iuly, and arrived at Edinburgh the 31<hi rend="superscript">st</hi>, And upon Shewing her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">tys</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l5"/>Warrant to the General, and other Officers of the Mint there, they prepared for the Recoynage <lb xml:id="l6"/>in the Methods of the Mint in the Tower.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3"><hi rend="large">A</hi>nd when the Moneyers arriv'd at Edinburgh, The Doctor and they Surveyed all the <lb xml:id="l7"/>Offices, Tools &amp;c. belonging to the Mint, and what were wanting were soon Supplied from London.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4"><hi rend="large">A</hi>fter the Officers of the Mint &amp; Doctor Gregory had compared the former Constitution of the <lb xml:id="l8"/>Mint of Scotland with that of the Mint in the Tower, and with her Majestys Instructions concern<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l9"/>ing the Recoynage; They added three new Clerks (during the Recoynage) to the Queens Clerk who was <lb xml:id="l10"/>there before; to witt one for the Master, one for the Warden, &amp; one for the Counter Warden. All these <lb xml:id="l11"/>four Clerks were well instructed in the Methods of Rateing and Standarding, and the <lb xml:id="l12"/>Formes of Book-keeping used in the Mint of the Tower, by the Clerk sent by her Majesty <lb xml:id="l13"/>for this purpose.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5"><hi rend="large">The</hi> Officers of the Mint &amp; the Doctor considering that by bringing the Mint of Scotland to the <lb xml:id="l14"/>same methods with that of the Tower, more Officers became necessary, and being unwilling to increase <lb xml:id="l15"/>Charges, <choice><sic>aggreed</sic><corr>agreed</corr></choice> that the Warden &amp; Counter Warden should by turns do the Office of the Surveyor of the <lb xml:id="l16"/>Meltings; and that the Counter Warden should officiat also as Weigher &amp; Teller, and that his Clerk <lb xml:id="l17"/>should be Clerk to those Offices. It was also agreed That the Queens Clerk should be Clerk <lb xml:id="l18"/>of the Papers and Irons.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6">The great difficulty was in the Melting, it being made there with Pit-coal. In this D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Gregory <lb xml:id="l19"/>made several experiments according to directions which he received from <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton from time to <lb xml:id="l20"/>time. And at last such Rules of Allaying were found out &amp; <choice><sic>aggreed</sic><corr>agreed</corr></choice> on, as by experience were found <lb xml:id="l21"/>to make the Silver of Standard fineness. And the <choice><sic>Essay Master</sic><corr>Assay Master</corr></choice> having no Clerk, was allowed an <lb xml:id="l22"/>assistant during this coynage.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par7"><hi rend="large">M</hi>atters being thus adjusted, D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Gregory continued in Edinburgh untill he saw the Methods of the Mint <lb xml:id="l23"/>in the Tower well understood, and exactly practised by all concerned, and the Recoynage advanced so, <lb xml:id="l24"/>that they coyned Six Thousand Pounds a week; and then at his request, represented by <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton <lb xml:id="l25"/>to your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="overline">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice>, and that there was no further occasion for his staying there, your <choice><abbr>Lor<hi rend="overline">dp</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> being pleased <lb xml:id="l26"/>to Dismiss him, as he was inform'd by <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton in his of 15<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> November, he parted from <lb xml:id="l27"/>Edinburgh on the 21<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> of November, after having taken an exact <choice><abbr>Acco<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Accompt</expan></choice> of the state &amp; condition <lb xml:id="l28"/>of the Mint at that time, and left directions for encreasing the Coynage.</p>
