                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1">Honoured <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice></p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">I shall be very sorry if my care to answer in all points the Instructions <lb xml:id="l1"/>given me as <choice><abbr>Dept</abbr><expan>Deputy</expan></choice> Comptroller of this mint, should occasion me to <lb xml:id="l2"/>incurr the displeasure of our superiours. I do not find in the Copy <lb xml:id="l3"/>we have of the Indenture of the Mint, that it is prohibited to putt <lb xml:id="l4"/>allay to scissell to reduce it to standard, and do think it necessary <lb xml:id="l5"/>to do it when the barrs are found better. Yet I am given to understand <lb xml:id="l6"/>I have erred in so doing, or which is equivalent in putting a Course <lb xml:id="l7"/>Ingott into a pot scissell. <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> my particular instructions are to <lb xml:id="l8"/>preserve an exact conformity in the finess and weight of all the <lb xml:id="l9"/>Monies to the standard of England, nor does our Generall Instructions <lb xml:id="l10"/>any where prohibit <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">w</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>hat we have done: besides I conceived it the <lb xml:id="l11"/>Kings Interest not to make the mony too fine for more than one <lb xml:id="l12"/>reason: And having observed by the reports of our Assay master <lb xml:id="l13"/>often repeated, that the potts sett of exactly standard, proved in the <lb xml:id="l14"/>pott and money assays alwais better, I concluded that the silver <lb xml:id="l15"/>did refine in the first, and that the allay did really burn away <lb xml:id="l16"/>to about the quantity of <formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">dwt</tei:hi> in each fusion: and to be sure of it, I <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l17"/>caused an Ingott of about 1<tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">dwt</tei:hi> worse to be melted down, with the same <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l18"/>heat we usually gave our mettall when we cast barrs, and this <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l19"/>without pouring it out we repeated three times, so that it was about <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l20"/>3 times as long as needed for casting, and at each hour I took an <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l21"/>Assay piece, which our assay master found to grow better and better <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l22"/>and the last best and very near standard: And the diminution of <tei:choice xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">t</tei:hi>:</tei:abbr><tei:expan>weight</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l23"/>was not much more than what was gained in finess; so that it <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l24"/>seemed demonstration to me, that supposing the potts set off <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l25"/>standard the barrs would be about <tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">dwt</tei:hi> better: and allowing <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l26"/>accordingly we have found our money with all the curiosity I <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l27"/>conceive the thing capable of, to answer to the standard of <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l28"/>England: and so I doubt not but it will be found, when our money <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l29"/>we have sent you up, comes to be assayed at the Tower, and our <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l30"/>pix at the Exchequer: However being advertised that this is not <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l31"/>the Tower practise I shall forbear it for the future, unless autho<tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="hyphenated" xml:id="l32"/>rized by your approbation humbly begging your <tei:del xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="cancelled"><tei:unclear reason="del" cert="high">approbati</tei:unclear></tei:del> opinion
