                <p xml:id="par2">Being obliged to write this post to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Newton, and being desirous to give you the same account of things, I made bold to send M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l1"/>Newtons letter under your cover which I entreat you <unclear reason="hand" cert="high">wri</unclear>te up <lb xml:id="l2"/>and send him <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> penny post, as also M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Weddalls Latter to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale <lb xml:id="l3"/>that you both may see it. In one of my last I wrote you that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l4"/>Hanmers originall design was levelled at me: the story's thus <lb xml:id="l5"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason being declared joynt Comptroller with your self, about <lb xml:id="l6"/>last Christmass, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hanmer living with<add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in</add> 18 miles of Chester, and brother <lb xml:id="l7"/>in Law to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason, whose sister he married, came about the 20<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>anuary <lb xml:id="l8"/>with about 100<hi rend="superscript">oz</hi> of silver to the Mint, requiring me to change it for <lb xml:id="l9"/>him at 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 4<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> ounce; and to shew me his relation to m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason he <lb xml:id="l10"/>brought with him the letter I wrote to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason to congratulate <lb xml:id="l11"/>him upon his grant; I imagining no harm, but being willing to oblig<supplied reason="damage">e</supplied> <lb xml:id="l12"/>a friend of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Masons, and considering the smallness of the summ, did <lb xml:id="l13"/>change it for him and took the ticket till due. This I <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">since</add> believe he <lb xml:id="l14"/>designed as a trapp to accuse me of undue preference, but the summ <lb xml:id="l15"/>being too little to be any wise regarded, he came again on the <gap reason="damage" unit="words" extent="1"/> <lb xml:id="l16"/>day of February, with severall persons, and 500 Ounces of silver <gap reason="damage" unit="words" extent="1"/> <lb xml:id="l17"/>changed likewise at 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 4<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> ounce. which he swore we should <gap reason="damage" extent="1" unit="words"/> <lb xml:id="l18"/>at that rate, or he would turn us all out of our place, or that <supplied reason="damage" cert="low">his</supplied> <lb xml:id="l19"/>brother should. But before he declared this he would <unclear reason="hand" cert="high">needs</unclear> <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">ha</unclear><supplied reason="damage" cert="low">ve to</supplied> <lb xml:id="l20"/>drink a glass of Wine with them, and the Warden accompanyd me <unclear reason="damage" cert="medium">We</unclear> <lb xml:id="l21"/>soon found them very ill company, exceptious and captious to a strong <lb xml:id="l22"/>degree, when one wiser then my self who happened to be there told me <lb xml:id="l23"/>that I ought to have a care of those people for that he perceive<supplied reason="damage">d</supplied> <lb xml:id="l24"/>they had a design on me; I was soon perswaded and filed off, and had <lb xml:id="l25"/>the misfortune to leave the Warden in the ill circumstances you <lb xml:id="l26"/>have lately heard <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">of</add>, though our affidavit <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">men</unclear> our luckily confronted <lb xml:id="l27"/>by the Testimony now sent you, under the hands of 3 or 4 as <unclear reason="damage" cert="medium">eminent</unclear> <lb xml:id="l28"/>persons as this country affords.
