Pithall of Norwich Court <unclear reason="hand">e</unclear>ver <lb xml:id="l1"/><choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> the May poll in <del type="strikethrough">the Strand</del> East Smithfield taken <lb xml:id="l2"/>this 9<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. day of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>uly 1698</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">He saith that he hath known F<choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>rdinando Croudson these 5 yeares <lb xml:id="l3"/>and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 4 yeares ago he saw the said Croudson at <placeName>Eggermond</placeName> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l4"/>4 miles from <placeName>Whit<choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>haven</placeName>, and that he the said Croudson had <choice><abbr>yn</abbr><expan>then</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l5"/>counterfeit money (<choice><sic>atlest</sic><corr>at least</corr></choice> 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>) newly cast in imita<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of old <lb xml:id="l6"/><choice><abbr>hammer<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>hammered</expan></choice> money And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a fortnight ago the said Croudson <lb xml:id="l7"/>came to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponents</expan></choice> house being latly come <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">fro</hi></abbr><expan>from</expan></choice> Holland <lb xml:id="l8"/>and had then Two Counterfeit Dollaws and two counterfeit <lb xml:id="l9"/>English shillings mill'd money, and acknowledged to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/>that he made them himselfe and put severall Mixtures <lb xml:id="l11"/>into them And that on Thursday was a Fortnight he <lb xml:id="l12"/>came againe to the Deponent's house, and on Saturday <lb xml:id="l13"/>following being the 25<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. day of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>une he sent the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to <lb xml:id="l14"/>the <placeName>Black Lyon</placeName> in <placeName>Foster Lane</placeName> to buy a pair of Iron <lb xml:id="l15"/>Flasks for which the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> gave 1<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 6<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. and that the night <lb xml:id="l16"/>before the Deponent fetcht <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 2 quarts of sand to cast in <lb xml:id="l17"/>from M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Scotts the Corner house going into S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. William <lb xml:id="l18"/>Warren's square near <placeName>King Edward stairs</placeName> in <placeName>Wapping</placeName> <lb xml:id="l19"/>And that on the said Saturday was a fortnight he melted <lb xml:id="l20"/>down a small parcell of Dutch money and cast five English <lb xml:id="l21"/>counterfeit Milld shillings. And the same night he sent <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l22"/>to a pewterer to buy half a pound of Block Tinn and a <choice><abbr>quart<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>quarter</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l23"/>of a pound of Tin-glass and melt<choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>d the same in a Crucible <lb xml:id="l24"/>and poured the metal into a Mold made with the Flasks <lb xml:id="l25"/>and sand above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned and that he thus cast at <choice><sic>lest</sic><corr>least</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l26"/>4 times making 6 counterfeit shillings at a time and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Depont</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l27"/>saw him cast and edge the said Counterfeit shillings and Mold <lb xml:id="l28"/>the Flasks in which he cast them and that he also saw <lb xml:id="l29"/>him case the 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned and that he edged the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l30"/>counterfeit money with a File</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> sayth also that on W<choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>dnesday was <unclear reason="hand">Tonnight</unclear> <lb xml:id="l31"/>he saw the said Croudson wash over with Aqua Fortis a <lb xml:id="l32"/>Silver <choice><sic>Ginea</sic><corr>Guinea</corr></choice> which he said he brought from Holland and <lb xml:id="l33"/>then ruff it over with Quick Silver and dry it upon <lb xml:id="l34"/>charcole fire and the <choice><sic>Ginea</sic><corr>Guinea</corr></choice> turned yellow like good gold <lb xml:id="l35"/>and that he took the Quick silver out of a Chest <lb xml:id="l36"/>which he said he brought from Holland

                    He saith also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> the said Croudson told the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he had been <lb xml:id="l37"/>Prisoner in Chester, and made his escape by giving the Keeper a Br<unclear reason="foxed" cert="low">i</unclear><supplied reason="foxed" cert="low">ck</supplied> <lb xml:id="l38"/>of 30 <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice></p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">He saith also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> a Chest and portmanue found in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Deponents</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l39"/>house with files Metalls and other things things in them <choice><abbr>belong<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>belonged</expan></choice> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said <lb xml:id="l40"/>Croudson and that he saw the said Croudson put into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> chest <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> File <lb xml:id="l41"/>with which he edged the false money above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">He saith also that a counterfeit shilling which he dropt in the <lb xml:id="l42"/>hosue of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Rob<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>effreys was made by the said Croudson</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6">He saith also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3 yeares ago he received counterfeit mony <lb xml:id="l43"/>of Thomas Pithall of Broughton beyond Cartnall Sands in <lb xml:id="l44"/>Lancashire and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> the said Tho Pithall and Croudson were <lb xml:id="l45"/>Fellow Shop Keepers at the said Broughton near <lb xml:id="l46"/>Dutton Bridge</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par7">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> saith also that a green bagg of Coyning Tooles <lb xml:id="l47"/>found by Chest<choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>r Castle the said Croudson did own to be his and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l48"/>if he had b<choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice><choice><orig>:</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>n there he would have thrown them into the Ditch <lb xml:id="l49"/>of the castle</p>
                <p xml:id="par8">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> saith also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he hath heard the <choice><abbr>s<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Croudson <lb xml:id="l50"/>speak of one Thomas Nelson as a coyner who is now in custody to <lb xml:id="l51"/>be tryed next assizes at Lancaster</p>
