                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice></add> <choice><abbr>Abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>About</expan></choice> 4 or 5 months ago M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Carter called me into his Lodging where he <lb xml:id="l1"/>shewed me a Copper Plate which he had reversed upon and had begun to  <lb xml:id="l2"/>grave it I was surprised at his shewing me such a thing and I askt him  <lb xml:id="l3"/>what he meant by shewing me such a thing and he <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> why you fool <lb xml:id="l4"/>there's no harm in it for I do it but for an <choice><abbr>experim<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>experiment</expan></choice> to shew one to get  <lb xml:id="l5"/>a litle money out of him I told him that if he had not a care such experiments  <lb xml:id="l6"/>would bring him into Newgate againe about a fortnight after I met him  <lb xml:id="l7"/>and he had this plate in his Grove and <choice><abbr>shew<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>shewed</expan></choice> me how he <choice><sic>he</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> had <choice><abbr>grav<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>graved</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l8"/>the knott I then told him that I did not desire to see any such things for  <lb xml:id="l9"/>nothing but trouble attended such things and pray not to me<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">d</hi></orig><reg>dd</reg></choice>le nor tell me  <lb xml:id="l10"/>any thing <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> it <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a month after I comeing home <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 10 at night  <lb xml:id="l11"/><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames the young man of the house told me m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Carter had left a letter for <lb xml:id="l12"/>me I not knowing any thing of it opened it before some people that  <lb xml:id="l13"/>was in the house and in it I found a piece of Copper graved and 10 blank <lb xml:id="l14"/>Notes I was <choice><abbr>surpriz<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>surprized</expan></choice> at it the people that see me open it and sudenly <lb xml:id="l15"/>surprized at it askt me <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> was the matter so said I this is left to trap  <lb xml:id="l16"/>me into some mischiefe so before them all I took a pair of scissors  <lb xml:id="l17"/>and cut the plate in two and the Tickets also and went in the fields  <lb xml:id="l18"/>and put them in some Rubish next morning M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Carter come <lb xml:id="l19"/>early to my lodging and askt me for <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> he left last night I askt  <lb xml:id="l20"/>him why he left it with me did he intend to trapan me into some  <lb xml:id="l21"/>mischief he said that he had heard that Sellinger and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Messeng<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Messengers</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l22"/>was after him and they came into a house where he was so he left it  <lb xml:id="l23"/>hear for hear of them I told him that I had thrown it away at which he  <lb xml:id="l24"/>fell in a great rage and swore I did intend to keep it for my selfe  <lb xml:id="l25"/>and if I <choice><abbr>discover<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>discovered</expan></choice> it so I told him I had hid it and would let him  <lb xml:id="l26"/>have it again for I durst not tell him I had cut it lest he should do me  <lb xml:id="l27"/>some mischief so it rested ever since <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> this time one FitzGerall  <lb xml:id="l28"/>and Carter came me and told me that they had been with of Dick (as <lb xml:id="l29"/>they called him) who lives with <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohnson who doth his buisines  <lb xml:id="l30"/>in the Exche<choice><orig></orig><reg>quer</reg></choice> and that he had given them 20 <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> to shew  <lb xml:id="l31"/>him the water how to take out writing and that he offered to put  <lb xml:id="l32"/>off Bills or Tickets for them and if I would be <choice><abbr>concern<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>concerned</expan></choice> I should  <lb xml:id="l33"/>But I told them I would not so Carter told me <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Fitzgarrall

                    had got a bill and pawned it and had told Dick <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn's man <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l34"/>he had given it to me to grave a plate by at <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I was angery  <lb xml:id="l35"/>at them for making their Cheats upon me and lay it on me so  <lb xml:id="l36"/>they promised they would go to Dick and undeceive him that I <lb xml:id="l37"/>had none of his bill but that Fitzgarrall had pawned it  <lb xml:id="l38"/>which somedaies after they told me they had done and  <lb xml:id="l39"/>Fitzgarall had shewn Dick one of blank Tickets that Carter had  <lb xml:id="l40"/>made by had it again and Carter told me he never had nor  <lb xml:id="l41"/>would put off any so I never see Fitzgarrall since so all this  <lb xml:id="l42"/>matter lay dead till <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a fortnight before Carter was taken  <lb xml:id="l43"/>and I never see none of them for <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3 months last past but a  <lb xml:id="l44"/>fortnight before Carter was taken he came to me and said that  <lb xml:id="l45"/>now he could get a great deal of money by his Plate soe I told I <lb xml:id="l46"/>had given one that was gone into the countrey because I had cut it and I was afraid to tell him so for fear he should e in a  <lb xml:id="l47"/>rage for my cu<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">t</hi></orig><reg>tt</reg></choice>ing his plate so I perswaded him to let me cut it  <lb xml:id="l48"/>and barn the Tickets so he told me I should go a fourth share <lb xml:id="l49"/>with him and have my 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. share in good bells when delivered and  <lb xml:id="l50"/>200<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">ll</hi></hi> advance but I told him it was a Nonsenceicall project of <lb xml:id="l51"/>him for bills must be traced from the originall and it was imposible  <lb xml:id="l52"/>but who ever undertook it must be found out and Price and the  <lb xml:id="l53"/>rest were and I would not be <choice><abbr>concern<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>concerned</expan></choice> in any such thing  <lb xml:id="l54"/>if I might have the Table full of Gold and that I had wife &amp;  <lb xml:id="l55"/>Children that could not goe away so I desire him to let it be cut  <lb xml:id="l56"/>and the Tickets burnt so he bid me ring them cut to  <lb xml:id="l57"/>him that day he was taken at 3 of the clock at the Red Lyon  <lb xml:id="l58"/>in Hangerford Market at M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Collier's now if he denys one  <lb xml:id="l59"/>word of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> I have here writt he is the greatest villain  <lb xml:id="l60"/>in the world but I can prove I cut the plate and Tickets <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l61"/>3 months ago that he brought them in a letter and left it <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">at</add>  <lb xml:id="l62"/><del type="strikethrough">a letter</del> any lodgings that he can grave and did grave it and there  <lb xml:id="l63"/>I did refuse to be concerned in it and hindred from going on  <lb xml:id="l64"/>so I hope that your honour will not be opinion that I have done  <lb xml:id="l65"/>any ill to the Government in this matter but have prevented an  <lb xml:id="l66"/>ill thing from being done <choice><abbr>Yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Your</expan></choice> honour desires me to send the plate  <lb xml:id="l67"/>and Tickets which <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></add> I will do if it may not turn to my hurt but  <lb xml:id="l68"/>here is a man that would put his own roguery upon me saying  <lb xml:id="l69"/>that I graved it which is false and I can prove it so. Now <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> I have  <lb xml:id="l70"/>been ingenious with you in giving you a whole rela<choice><orig>i</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of all that I  <lb xml:id="l71"/>know of this <choice><abbr>matt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>matter</expan></choice> I hope you will not turn it to my disadvantage  <lb xml:id="l72"/>as you promised you would not and that if you desire me to give  <lb xml:id="l73"/>you the plate and bills that you will give one some assurance that  <lb xml:id="l74"/>I shall not be put to trouble but if you intend to try one for  <lb xml:id="l75"/>this matter I not knowing what this ill man will say  <lb xml:id="l76"/><choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> me I hope your <choice><abbr>Hono<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Honour</expan></choice>

                    not be angery with me if I do all I can for my defence for I have such a  <lb xml:id="l77"/>man to be evidence <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> me <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> will not stick at any thing to swear to get  <lb xml:id="l78"/>his own liberty for he was once taken for coyning and stealing horses <lb xml:id="l79"/>and put in Warwick Gaol so he made a formall Informa<choice><orig>c</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> a great  <lb xml:id="l80"/>many persons in London but there was no such persons in the world so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l81"/>Keeper of the Gaol came up to London with him where he made his  <lb xml:id="l82"/>escape from — <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="2"/> prove by a Certificate from thence</p>
         
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">Hee has been 6 times in the Pillory in London and one <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in</add> the Countrey <lb xml:id="l83"/>for forgery and perjury, <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="2"/> Hee robb'd his Master was put in the  <lb xml:id="l84"/>Counter and got out in woman's Clothes he has gone by severall names  <lb xml:id="l85"/>but his name it <unclear reason="hand" cert="high">trot</unclear>. He has been in most Gaols in England  <lb xml:id="l86"/>I <choice><abbr>discover<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>discovered</expan></choice> and convicted him of forgery and at work a coyning his <lb xml:id="l87"/>Companion was handed that was <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">taken</add> with him but he got out <choice><sic>out</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> of Gaol <lb xml:id="l88"/>so <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">res</unclear>eapt so I know he will do me all the hurt he can <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="3"/> He is now  <lb xml:id="l89"/>outlawed for high Treason so I hope your honour will believe him  <lb xml:id="l90"/>before you see whether I can clear my self and not this ill  <lb xml:id="l91"/>man put his own roguery upon me to clear his self</p>
            
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">Bit if it shall ever appear otherwise that I am guilty I desire no favour or  <lb xml:id="l92"/>if there by any bills Tickets et that I know of have any hand in <lb xml:id="l93"/>them <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="2"/> But since I have done all that lay in my power to prevent  <lb xml:id="l94"/>others from doing an ill thing to the <choice><abbr>Governm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice> and refused all <lb xml:id="l95"/>offers made to my self to do it I hope your honour will not put me  <lb xml:id="l96"/>to further trouble if I send these things in my <del type="strikethrough">position</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">posession</add> since I am not  <lb xml:id="l97"/>guilty of doing any harm thereby but prevented harm being done  <lb xml:id="l98"/>by my having them I am.</p>
