                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><persName>Elizabeth Maddock</persName> of the Citty of <placeName>Chester</placeName> <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">Sp<hi rend="superscript">er</hi></hi></abbr><expan>Spinster</expan></choice> (daughter of <persName>Joseph Maddock</persName>, <lb xml:id="l6"/>of the same Citty Tanner) aged 17. Years or thereabouts being <choice><abbr>Ex<hi rend="overline">aie</hi>d</abbr><expan>Examined</expan></choice> Saith, that <lb xml:id="l7"/>about Six Months agoe One M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> (whose Christian name she doth not know <supplied reason="omitted">)</supplied> <lb xml:id="l8"/>came to her as she was standing at the her said fathers door in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Forest <lb xml:id="l9"/>street in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Citty and desired to Make himselfe known to her <lb xml:id="l10"/>declareing great love and kindness for her, and <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3. Weeks <choice><abbr>afterw<hi rend="superscript">ds</hi></abbr><expan>afterwards</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l11"/>she went to see <persName>Ann Gill</persName> att her hause in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Forest Street, And <lb xml:id="l12"/>there found <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName>, who Kept this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> about an houre <lb xml:id="l13"/>and this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> beleiving the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> to have a real kindness, <lb xml:id="l14"/>and <choice><abbr>affe<hi rend="overline">ion</hi></abbr><expan>affection</expan></choice> for her, did Severall times afterwards entertain &amp; receive <lb xml:id="l15"/>him into her fathers house (unknown to the said Father) and <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a Month <lb xml:id="l16"/>agoe this<choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice>s <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> father told her, that he was informed that she <lb xml:id="l17"/>had Admitted a strange gentleman into her company without his <lb xml:id="l18"/>consent, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> did then confess to her <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Father &amp; told him <lb xml:id="l19"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same person &amp; that he had lately <lb xml:id="l20"/>Lodged at the house of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Joseph Horton</persName> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Citty and was then <lb xml:id="l21"/>gone to London, he <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> haveing frequently told this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l22"/>he must goe very shortly to London, thô in truth she did beleive he was not <lb xml:id="l23"/>then gone, and the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> did continue to visit this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> frequently <lb xml:id="l24"/>at ther said Fathers house and Severall times proposed to acquaint this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice>s <lb xml:id="l25"/>said Father of his kindness for her and to desire his consent <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he might <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">Marry</fw>

him before the said <persName>Roberts</persName> <lb xml:id="l27"/>was gone to London, and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said <persName>Roberts</persName> Still declared he must goe <lb xml:id="l28"/>thither very shortly (his mother haveing Sent for him Severall times) <lb xml:id="l29"/>and that he stay'd only for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Mr <persName>Horton</persName>s company, and this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l30"/>further saith that on <date>Munday the 9. day of this Instant October</date> the said <lb xml:id="l31"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> was in company with this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> in M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi> <persName>Ridge</persName>s Rown near <lb xml:id="l32"/>the High Cross of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Citty where they Stay'd to See the Bull baiting <lb xml:id="l33"/>and afterwards the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> invited this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> thence to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Horton</persName>s <lb xml:id="l34"/>house where she Stayd <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> half an hour, and she did not See the <choice><abbr>S<hi being unwilling to stay with <lb xml:id="l38"/>him there at so publick a place acquainted him <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>An Gill</persName> <lb xml:id="l39"/>had entrusted her with the Key of her <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Ann Gill</persName>s house, there being <lb xml:id="l40"/>then no body in it, whereupon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> came to her rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 2. hours and a halfe and <lb xml:id="l42"/>parted <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> between 4. and 5. a clock the same afternoon, the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l43"/><persName>Roberts</persName> walking towards <placeName>Baughton</placeName> and saying he would See this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l44"/>again the same night (but did not <choice><abbr>men<hi rend="overline">io</hi>n</abbr><expan>mention</expan></choice> what time) And about <lb xml:id="l45"/>ten of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Clock in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Night of the Same day the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Roberts</persName> <lb xml:id="l46"/>and the said <persName>Ann Gill</persName> came togeather to this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> at her <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> fathers <lb xml:id="l47"/>house (he being then Gone to bed) and they staid all three togeather in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kitching <lb xml:id="l48"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said house all Night till <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 6. or 7. a clock in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> morning &amp; then the <lb xml:id="l49"/>said <persName>Ann Gill</persName> first went out and p<hi rend="superscript">re</hi>sently returned and told this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> and <lb xml:id="l50"/>the said <persName>Roberts</persName> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>horton</persName> was taken up for coyning (or to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Effect) <lb xml:id="l51"/>but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said <persName>Roberts</persName> Sayd he could not beleive it, for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he had lived so long <lb xml:id="l52"/>with him and never observed any thing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> was ill of the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Horton</persName> <lb xml:id="l53"/>and then they parted, and this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> did not afterwards See him or hear <lb xml:id="l54"/>from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said <persName>Roberts</persName> untill <date>Wednesday last the 18.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of this Instant Octob.<hi rend="superscript">er</hi></date> <lb xml:id="l55"/>on which day between 7. &amp; 8. a clock at night he knocked at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> door <lb xml:id="l56"/>of her said Fathers house (her said Father not being within) and this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l57"/>let him in, and told him there was great Enquiry made after him in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l58"/>Town upon <choice><abbr>su<hi rend="overline">pion</hi></abbr><expan>suspicion</expan></choice> of his being concern'd <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Horton</persName>, to which <lb xml:id="l59"/>the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Roberts</persName> made afterwards he desired he might Stay in one <lb xml:id="l61"/>of the Upper Rooms of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said house till this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> could be at <lb xml:id="l62"/>leisure to come to him, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> consneted unto and put him <lb xml:id="l63"/>into one of the Upper Rooms of the said house, and there left him <lb xml:id="l64"/>without a Candle, and returned to the business in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kitching &amp; p<hi rend="superscript">re</hi>sently <lb xml:id="l65"/>afterwards one <persName>Samuel Leigh</persName> a Constable and Some others came into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l66"/>Said Kitching, and asked this <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> if any man was in the <lb xml:id="l67"/>said house, to which She answered no, And the said <choice><abbr>Exaīant</abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> p<hi rend="superscript">re</hi>sently afterwards went up, &amp; found <choice><abbr>y<hi
