                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par1">The Examination of <persName>John Gibson</persName> of <placeName>Skitby</placeName> in the county <lb xml:id="l1"/>of York Labourer apprenhended and accused for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Traiterous <lb xml:id="l2"/>counterfeiting the currant <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">coyn</add> of this Kingdome Taken before <lb xml:id="l3"/>me this <date>6.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of Aprill Anno <choice><abbr>dom:</abbr><expan>domini</expan></choice> 1702.</date></p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">Imp<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></add> This Examinant saith that within the space of twelve months <lb xml:id="l4"/>last past he hath been severall times at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> house of one <persName>Thomas <lb xml:id="l5"/>Eaton</persName> in <placeName>Newland</placeName> where he and the said <persName>Eton</persName> and the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Eton</persName><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> wife <lb xml:id="l6"/>frequently coined shillings &amp; six penny peices of block tinn and <lb xml:id="l7"/>Pewter mixed together in a wooden Mould, and that one <persName>Jo: Shaw</persName> <lb xml:id="l8"/>now of <placeName>south cave</placeName> but late of <placeName>Skidby</placeName> aforesaid about a year and a <lb xml:id="l9"/>half ago came to this examinants house and told him that one <lb xml:id="l10"/><persName>Thomas Gott</persName> of <placeName>Kingston upon Hull</placeName> had taught him the said <pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/><persName>Shaw</persName> to counterfeit money and <persName>shaw</persName> produced a wooden instrument <lb xml:id="l11"/>which he called a mould which was about half a yard long <lb xml:id="l12"/>whereupon they fell to work, and coyned eight or nine shillings of <lb xml:id="l13"/>Pewter and block tin mixed together which <del type="cancelled">he</del> <persName>Shaw</persName> affirmed he <lb xml:id="l14"/>brought from <placeName>Hull</placeName>, And this Examinat also saith one <persName>Henr. Playfair</persName> <lb xml:id="l15"/>late of <placeName>Skidly</placeName> was present and assisting the said <persName>John Shaw</persName>, &amp; this <lb xml:id="l16"/>Examinant when they coyned <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said eight or nine shillings as <lb xml:id="l17"/>aforesaid and that the said <persName>Shaw</persName> told this Examinant that one <lb xml:id="l18"/><persName>John Wilkinson</persName> of <placeName>Cottingham</placeName> carpenter made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said mould they <lb xml:id="l19"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> examinant <persName>shaw</persName> and <persName>Plafair</persName> then coyned in, butt this Ex<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l20"/>aminant doth beleive the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Wilkinson</persName> did not know what use <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>said Mould was for, and this Examinant doth confes that he did <lb xml:id="l22"/>coyn <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> four counterfeit Shillings which were found in his cupboard <lb xml:id="l23"/>att the searching his house, which he coynd in a wooden mould, <lb xml:id="l24"/>which this examinant made himself, And this Examinant <lb xml:id="l25"/>further saith that he being one day at the house of the abovenamed <lb xml:id="l26"/><persName>Thomas Eton</persName> in <placeName>Newland</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> the said <persName>Eton</persName> carryed this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l27"/>into a cockloft there and shewed him a pair of Iron or steel stamps <lb xml:id="l28"/>for coyning shillings, which stamps <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Eton</persName> took out of the thatch <lb xml:id="l29"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said cockloft and further this Examinant saith not <lb xml:id="l30"/><hi rend="small"><foreign xml:lang="lat">capt co<hi rend="overline">r</hi> me die et <lb xml:id="l31"/>anno supra dict.</foreign></hi> <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="30"/><hi rend="large"><persName>John Gibson</persName></hi> <lb xml:id="l32"/><hi rend="large"><persName>Edw: Barnard</persName></hi>
