                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par1">The <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="overline">inacon</hi></abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> of John Hutton of Wolversham<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l1"/>pton in the County of Stafford Shoemaker taken <lb xml:id="l2"/>upon oath before me at Stafford the 29<supplied reason="omitted"><hi rend="superscript">th</hi></supplied> day of March <lb xml:id="l3"/><space unit="chars" dim="horizontal" extent="20"/>1699</p>
                <p xml:id="par2">This Examinant Saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he between Michalday &amp; Christmas <lb xml:id="l4"/>last Saw . . <space unit="chars" dim="horizontal" extent="10"/> &amp; Thomas Marten of Holme wife <lb xml:id="l5"/>wash boyle and guild five or 6 pieces called Guineas &amp; Saw <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l6"/><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="12"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">same woman r</add>un down Silver into the Shape of a Guinea now <lb xml:id="l7"/><choice><abbr>curr<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>current</expan></choice> in England and this <choice><abbr>Examin<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> working iron work at a <lb xml:id="l8"/>village called Caverswall near to the hill called holme both <lb xml:id="l9"/>in <choice><abbr>Staff<hi rend="overline">ordsh</hi></abbr><expan>Staffordshire</expan></choice> and being expert in engraving upon Iron <lb xml:id="l10"/>and Steel, And the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Martens knowing thereof she and her <lb xml:id="l11"/>father Thomas Allva proposed to put a boy of their acquain<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l12"/>tance to this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> to learn the art of engraving upon Iron <lb xml:id="l13"/>and Steel and upon that occasion was oft at the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Thomas <lb xml:id="l14"/>Martens house, and was <choice><abbr>ꝑmitted</abbr><expan>permitted</expan></choice> to the Said Martens wife <lb xml:id="l15"/>to wash, file and guild as afore<choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> and this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="faded" unit="chars" extent="10"/></del> <lb xml:id="l16"/>at the times aforesaid saw the Said Martens wife have and <lb xml:id="l17"/>use Spaud and <add place="inline" indicator="no">an</add> Edging <choice><abbr>Instrum<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Instrument</expan></choice> to edge Guineas &amp; Shillings <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>, <lb xml:id="l18"/>And this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> further saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 5, or 6 months Since he <lb xml:id="l19"/>Saw Thomas Lees of Wetley Moore and Margaret his sister <lb xml:id="l20"/>coyn Shillings and Guineas and Saw them have &amp; use a <lb xml:id="l21"/>stampt or Dye which they use in <choice><sic>in</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> makeing the Shillings <lb xml:id="l22"/>and them use an Instrument in makeing the guineas &amp; <lb xml:id="l23"/>Shillings and the Said Tho: Lees and Marg<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Lees proposed to <lb xml:id="l24"/>this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> to teach a bastard boy of the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Margaret Lees <lb xml:id="l25"/>in the Art of engraving and by that means this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l26"/>saw the said Thomas Lees and his <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Sister coyn the Said <lb xml:id="l27"/>Guineas and Shillings, and Saw the Said Instrument and <lb xml:id="l28"/>Saw the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Tho: Lees and Margaret Lees at the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> time <lb xml:id="l29"/>mix Silver with copper and that they put <choice><orig>Arsneik </orig><reg>Arsenik</reg></choice> to the Copper <lb xml:id="l30"/>and bean <choice><abbr>flow<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>flower</expan></choice> and then the Copper was white like Silver <lb xml:id="l31"/>And that five or 6 monthes Since he Saw John Hartley of the <lb xml:id="l32"/><choice><abbr>ꝑish</abbr><expan>Parish</expan></choice> of Carewall Naylor coynmill'd shillings and half <lb xml:id="l33"/>Crowns to the value of 4.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> and <choice><orig>andth athe</orig><reg>and that he</reg></choice> <choice><sic>he</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> melted the Copper <lb xml:id="l34"/>first and then coverd it with Silver, and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>then</expan></choice> Saw him use <lb xml:id="l35"/>a Mill for Milling the half Crownes and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he used Stamps <lb xml:id="l36"/>and edging Instruments for the making the Shillings. <lb xml:id="l37"/>29 Mariij 99 <space unit="chars" dim="horizontal" extent="35"/>John Hutton</p>
