                <p xml:id="par3">In obedience to <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> Reference of 23 November last we have <lb xml:id="l1"/>enquiredinto <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Case of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Antony Redhead late Master &amp; Worker of the <lb xml:id="l2"/>Mint at Norwich &amp; find it truly stated in the annexed paper on <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the <lb xml:id="l3"/>said Reference is endorsed. And particularly <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">we</add> <del type="cancelled">find</del> the Day-books on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Mint <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; the Cashbooks of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead &amp; his Clerk &amp; another book composed and <lb xml:id="l5"/>signed by the Warden of that Mint we find that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead upon the breaking <lb xml:id="l6"/>up of that Mint was indebted 2497<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>. 16<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 3<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Leonard Blofeld for ham<lb xml:id="l7"/>mered money at 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>oz</abbr><expan>ounce</expan></choice>.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">In discharge of this debt M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead produces three Receipts for 2500<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> 
                    <lb xml:id="l8"/>paid to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofelds Order out of that Mint, the one dated Aug. 26 1697 for 500<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> 
                    <lb xml:id="l9"/>the other two dated Aug 30 &amp; Sept. 1 1697 for 1000<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> each. To which 
                    <lb xml:id="l10"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld &amp; his friends answer that whatever summs were paid to him 
                    <lb xml:id="l11"/>or his Order out of that Mint upon such private Receipts were <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">paid</del><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">paid in course</add> for silver imported &amp;</add> intended upon 
                    <lb xml:id="l12"/>the next accounting to be brought to account &amp; set off upon the printed Mint 
                    <lb xml:id="l13"/>Tickets then payable in course &amp; accordingly were all of them faithfully 
                    <lb xml:id="l14"/>brought to account as he is ready to make oath: but the Receipts were 
                    <lb xml:id="l15"/>not always taken up &amp; cancelled as they should have been the <choice><abbr>endorsm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>endorsment</expan></choice> 
                    <lb xml:id="l16"/>on the printed Mint Tickets, as they conceived, implying according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> order 
                    <lb xml:id="l17"/>&amp; course of the Mint that all summs paid untill the day of the endors<lb xml:id="l18"/>ment were then accounted for &amp; set off upon the printed Tickets &amp; there<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l19"/>by all private Receipts of such summs untill that day discharged and 
                    <lb xml:id="l20"/>made voyd which made him &amp; his Agents less carefull to take them up. 
                    <lb xml:id="l21"/>They say also that about three weeks after the date of the said three 
                    <lb xml:id="l22"/>Receipts vi<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">z</add><hi rend="superscript">t</hi> on 22<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Sept 1697 M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld accounted <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead 
                    <lb xml:id="l23"/>&amp; endorsed 14922<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> on two Mint Tickets <del type="cancelled">then paya</del> including all 
                    <lb xml:id="l24"/>summs paid to him untill that time &amp; that in so short a time as three 
                    <lb xml:id="l25"/>weeks so great a summ as 2500 could not be forgot, &amp; that in December 
                    <lb xml:id="l26"/>following he accounted again &amp; endorsed 6443<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. 13<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 9<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> on two other Mint 
                    <lb xml:id="l27"/>Tickets including all further summs untill that day: By which Accountings 
                    <lb xml:id="l28"/>&amp; endorsements the said three Receipts (if they be true ones) being 
                    <lb xml:id="l29"/>looked upon as discharged they were not mentioned any further by 
                    <lb xml:id="l30"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead while that Mint stood nor for a long time after but 
                    <lb xml:id="l31"/>lay neglected till he thought fitt to produce them, as he did also s<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">om</add>e 
                    <lb xml:id="l32"/>other Receipts of the same kind <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the Importers neglected to take 
                    <lb xml:id="l33"/>up &amp; cancel &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are now allowed to be voyd.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">In examining this matter we find therefore that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead 
                    <lb xml:id="l34"/>did pay several summs of money to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld &amp; some other Importers 
                    <lb xml:id="l35"/>upon private Receipts without endorsing the summs upon the printed Mint 
                    <lb xml:id="l36"/>Tickets untill they came to a general recconing upon the Ticket or Tickets 
                    <lb xml:id="l37"/>next payable in course, &amp; that the Importers did sometimes upon such a 
                    <lb xml:id="l38"/>recconing neglect to take up their Receipts. That M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld did endorse 14922<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>

                    on two Tickets 22 Sept 1697, &amp; 6443<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>. 13<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 9<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> more on two others in Decem<supplied reason="copy" cert="low">ber</supplied>
                    <lb xml:id="l39"/>following as he alledged &amp; we humbly conceive those endorsements by the cou<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">rse</supplied> 
                    <lb xml:id="l40"/>of the Mint to be in full of all moneys paid upon those Tickets so as to 
                    <lb xml:id="l41"/>voyd the said three Receipts unless M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead can positively prove the 
                    <lb xml:id="l42"/>payment of more money by 2500<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> upon the two first of those Tickets 
                    <lb xml:id="l43"/>then was Endorsed upon them, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> proof is wanting &amp; would infer the cri<supplied reason="copy">me</supplied> 
                    <lb xml:id="l44"/>of undue preference. The Officers of that Mint for preventing mis<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l45"/>recconings took an account every two or three days &amp; sometimes dayly of 
                    <lb xml:id="l46"/>all the monies new coyned &amp; paid away &amp; of what remained in the 
                    <lb xml:id="l47"/>Treasury, whereby a misrecconing of 2500<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> <del type="strikethrough">would</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">might</add> soon have been 
                    <lb xml:id="l48"/>discovered: whereas those three Receipts lay neglected till about Michael<supplied reason="copy">mas</supplied> 
                    <lb xml:id="l49"/>1699 <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></unclear></del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was two years after the endorsement, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead repre<lb xml:id="l50"/>senting that he then found the amongst his paper. About the same <lb xml:id="l51"/>time he found also and produced a Receipt of 1858<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> left in that 
                    <lb xml:id="l52"/>Mint by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Dashwood another <del type="cancelled">Receiver</del> Importer of publick Hamm<choice><orig><supplied reason="copy" cert="high">ed</supplied></orig><reg>ered</reg></choice> 
                    <lb xml:id="l53"/>money; but by an Affidavit of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Tho Allen Clerk to the <choice><abbr>Ward.</abbr><expan>Warden</expan></choice> 
                    <lb xml:id="l54"/>of that Mint made before my Lord Chief Baron Ward <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 3<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> of Iuly 
                    <lb xml:id="l55"/>1701 &amp; by other circumstances it appears to us that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Dashwood did 
                    <lb xml:id="l56"/>account for that money &amp; neglect to take up &amp; cancel the Receipt 
                    <lb xml:id="l57"/>&amp; this <add place="inline" indicator="no">is</add> now acknowledged also by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead. Add <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">about</add><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> the same time 
                    <lb xml:id="l58"/>the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead produced also two other Receipts of the aforesa<supplied reason="copy">id</supplied> 
                    <lb xml:id="l59"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld besides the three above mentioned both dated in the same 
                    <lb xml:id="l60"/>month of August 1697 the one for 500<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> the other for 1000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>, but 
                    <lb xml:id="l61"/>by the afor<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>said Affidavit of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Allen these summs were accounted 
                    <lb xml:id="l62"/>for upon the same 22<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of Sept. 1697 &amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead insists no
                    <lb xml:id="l63"/>further upon them. Seing therefore that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld upon accounting 
                    <lb xml:id="l64"/>22<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Sept 1697 did neglect to take up &amp; cancel some of his Receipts then 
                    <lb xml:id="l65"/>accounted for, it may be suspected that he neglected to take up the rest <lb xml:id="l66"/>amongst <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are the three now produced. For the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Allen in 
                    <lb xml:id="l67"/>the Affidavit above mentioned affirms further that he hath heard &amp; 
                    <lb xml:id="l68"/><choice><orig>beleives</orig><reg>believes</reg></choice> that <del type="cancelled">he</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead</add> hath another Note of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld for 1000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; 
                    <lb xml:id="l69"/><choice><orig>beleives</orig><reg>believes</reg></choice> that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld forgot to take up that Note when he accompted 
                    <lb xml:id="l70"/>for the money &amp; signed the printed Receipt or Ticket: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Note we 
                    <lb xml:id="l71"/>take to be one of the three Receipts now produced by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead. And 
                    <lb xml:id="l72"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead himself affirms nothing further of the said three Receipts then 
                    <lb xml:id="l73"/>that he found them amongst his papers sometime after that Mint broke up 
                    <lb xml:id="l74"/>&amp; <choice><orig>beleives</orig><reg>believes</reg></choice> them to be truely signed by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Crowne who was imployed by 
                    <lb xml:id="l75"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Demee the Agent of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld. They are in the form of private <lb xml:id="l76"/>Receipts so that without M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofelds consent they cannot be allowed by <lb xml:id="l77"/>an Auditor either in M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redheads Accompt or in that of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Blofeld which <lb xml:id="l78"/>is now passing. All things being considered we are humbly of opini<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>n that <lb xml:id="l79"/>they have already been accompted for &amp; ought not to be insisted upon a <lb xml:id="l80"/>further. And M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead himself does not any longer insist peremptorily <lb xml:id="l81"/>upon them but submits them to <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> wisdome.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6">We further lay before <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> conclusion of <lb xml:id="l82"/>the Mint at Norwich was indebted to one M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaplain a Receiver of the <lb xml:id="l83"/>Land Tax for 2573<hi rend="superscript">oz</hi> 5<hi rend="superscript">dwt</hi> of hammered money at 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>oz</abbr><expan>ounce</expan></choice> the summ of <lb xml:id="l84"/>643<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. 6<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 3<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>, &amp; that in  M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Chaplains <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>ccompt <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is past &amp; declared &amp;

                    a Quetes obteined, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead is set insuper for this debt at 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> 8<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> <lb xml:id="l85"/><choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>oz</abbr><expan>ounce</expan></choice>, whereas M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale should have been set insuper, &amp; that only <lb xml:id="l86"/>at 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>oz</abbr><expan>ounce</expan></choice>.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par7"><del type="blockStrikethrough">The said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead was also indebted to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Briggs a Receiver <lb xml:id="l87"/>of the Land Tax <hi rend="large">~</hi> <hi rend="large">~</hi> <hi rend="large">~</hi> for 3529<hi rend="superscript">oz</hi> 10<hi rend="superscript">dwt</hi> of hammered money at <lb xml:id="l88"/>5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> ꝑ oz, the summ of 882<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. 7<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 6<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. But the Administrators of the <lb xml:id="l89"/>said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Briggs have passed his Accompts &amp; obteined a Quetus without <lb xml:id="l90"/>charging M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redhead with this debt. Whence it is presumed that <lb xml:id="l91"/>they have either mislayed or lost M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Redheads Tickets &amp; thereby <lb xml:id="l92"/>have been dammaged in the said summ of 882<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. 7<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 6<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</del></p>
