                <p xml:id="par1">Because Merchants pretend that they are not to be taxed for the Duty <lb xml:id="l1"/>they pay to the king but only the <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>xcess of the <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">v</add>alue <del type="strikethrough">abo</del> of their <lb xml:id="l2"/>goods above the Duty: <del type="strikethrough">the</del> for doing this the following probleme is proposed</p>
                
                <p rend="center" xml:id="par2">Problem.</p>
                <p rend="center" xml:id="par3">To lay a <del type="strikethrough">tax</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Duty</add> at any <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">assigned</add> rate upon the excess of the value of any parcel <lb xml:id="l3"/>of goods above the Duty.</p>
                
                <p rend="center" xml:id="par4">Sol<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">u</add>tion.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">By the Rule of fals Position, assume any <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">e</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">E</add>xcess at pleas<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ur</add>e, &amp; the rate <lb xml:id="l4"/>will give the Duty upon it, &amp; the Duty added to the Excess will compose <lb xml:id="l5"/>the va<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">lu</add>e of the goods <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in this case<choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add>. <del type="cancelled">Then any o</del> And by the golden Rule, As this <lb xml:id="l6"/>value is to the Duty, so is the Value of any <del type="strikethrough">other</del> parcel of goods to <lb xml:id="l7"/>the Duty upon <del type="over">it.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">the</add>m.</p>

                <p xml:id="par7">If the Excess <del type="cancelled">be</del> assumed be 100<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; the rate 9 <choice><abbr>p<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>per</expan></choice> cent, the Duty will <lb xml:id="l8"/>be 9<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>, &amp; the value of the goods 109<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. <del type="strikethrough"><del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nd as <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">the value</del></add> 109 <add place="inline" indicator="no">is</add> to <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">the Duty</del></add> 9 so will the value <lb xml:id="l9"/>in any other case be to the Duty upon it</del> And by the golden Rule: <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>s <lb xml:id="l10"/>109 to 9, so is the value of any parcel of Goods to the Duty upon them</p>
                
                <p rend="center" xml:id="par8">Example 2</p>
                <p xml:id="par9">If the Excess assumed be 100<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; the rate <del type="cancelled">be</del> 20 per cent the <lb xml:id="l11"/>Duty will be 20<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; the value of the goods 1<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">1</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">2</add>0<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. And by the <lb xml:id="l12"/>golde<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add> Rule; As 120 to 20, so is the value of any parcel of <lb xml:id="l13"/>goods to the Duty upon them.</p>
                
                <p rend="indent5" xml:id="par10"><del type="strikethrough">Any other way of recconing <del type="strikethrough">makes</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">is illegal</del></add> voyd the Act of Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</del></p>
