                <p xml:id="par1"><del type="cancelled">If <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> Astyages did nothing glorious. Of all the kings of the Medes Cyaxeres was the greatest warrior <lb xml:id="l1"/>Herodotus tells us that he was much more warlike then his ancestors &amp; that he was the first who reduced <lb xml:id="l2"/>the irregular &amp; undisciplined forces of the Medes into discipline &amp; therefore by the testimony of Herodotu<supplied reason="copy">s</supplied> <lb xml:id="l3"/>he was that king of the Medes <del type="strikethrough">of</del> whom Æschylus <del type="strikethrough">writes</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">makes the first conqueror &amp; founder of the Empire <gap reason="hand" unit="chars" extent="2"/> saying</add> <foreign xml:lang="gre"><gap reason="hand" unit="words" extent="9"/></foreign> <lb xml:id="l4"/>He that first le<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">d</add> the army was a Mede. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> Darius according to Daniel was the son of Achsuerus of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l5"/>seed of <del type="strikethrough">The next</del> the Medes, that is <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the son of Cyaxeres</add> of the seed royal. He reigned by the laws of the Medes &amp; Persians <lb xml:id="l6"/>(Dan 0.8, 12, 15 <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; 8.20</add>) &amp; therefore he reigned over the Medes &amp; Persians as well as over Babylon, &amp; the <lb xml:id="l7"/>Medes being set first were uppermost in his reign, <del type="strikethrough">as the</del> for <del type="strikethrough">in the reign of Cyrus</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">afterwards</add> when <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l8"/>Persians were uppermost they were set before the Medes <del type="strikethrough">Dan</del> Esther 1.3, 14, 18, 19. You may know <lb xml:id="l9"/>also by the number of provinces in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> kingdom of Darius that he <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del">re</unclear></del> was king of the Medes &amp; Persians <lb xml:id="l10"/>For upon the conquest of Babylon he set over the whole kingdom 120 Princes &amp; afterwards when <lb xml:id="l11"/><del type="strikethrough">the Provinces of</del> Egypt Thebais &amp; L<del type="over">y</del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add>b<del type="over">y</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ic</add>a were added <del type="strikethrough">to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> kingdom</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">by Cambyses</add> the whole continued but 127 <lb xml:id="l12"/>Provinces Esther 1. <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="1"/></add>. So then <del type="strikethrough">its ce</del> Cyaxeres, Darius &amp; Cyrus were the three first kings mentioned <lb xml:id="l13"/>by Æschylus the oldest greek author who writes of these things. Herodotus has incerted the order of <lb xml:id="l14"/>the kings Astyages &amp; Cyaxeres, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">putting <del type="strikethrough">Cyaxer</del> Astyages after Cyaxeres</add> Xenophon has restored the right order &amp; Daniel has <del type="strikethrough">inserted</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">added</add> <lb xml:id="l15"/>Darius <del type="strikethrough">whom the Greeks <unclear reason="del">reigned be who</unclear> reigned <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <unclear reason="del">worst</unclear> <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="2"/> or Cyaxares &amp; Cyrus</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">who</del> after them both, a man of the same age <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Cyrus the grandson of Astyages.</add></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> Astyages did nothing glorious. <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">It was</del></add> In his rei<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">g</hi></orig><reg>gn</reg></choice> <del type="cancelled">the Scy</del> a great body of Scyth<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>ans commanded by Madyes <lb type="intentional" xml:id="l16"/>– – – – Darius into a very great Monarchy. This Monarchy rose up by the fall of Nineveh &amp; about <lb xml:id="l17"/>69 or 70 years after by the fall of Babylon grew to its full greatness excepting that Cambyses en<lb xml:id="l18"/>larged it into Egypt.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">The great slaughters <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Cyaxeres made of the nations in erecting th<del type="over">is</del><add place="over" indicator="no">is</add> Empire of the Medes <lb type="intentional" xml:id="l19"/>– – – – – <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was about 70 years.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4"><add place="inline" indicator="no">It is to be conceived therefore – – – <choice><sic>befor</sic><corr>before</corr></choice> Cy<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>us as above.</add></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">When Cyrus had conquered Babylon – – – committed a mistake in the time &amp; name of the <lb xml:id="l20"/>king. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6">King <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames <del type="over"><unclear reason="del">1<hi rend="superscript">s</hi></unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> 1<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> <del type="strikethrough">in token</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">to signify</add> that he would unite the two kingdoms <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of England &amp; Scotland</add> stiled <lb xml:id="l21"/>himself <foreign xml:lang="lat">Magna Britanniæ Rex</foreign> &amp; on the Reverse of his broad pieces &amp; <lb xml:id="l22"/>xx<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> pieces <del type="cancelled">stiled</del> put this Motto <foreign xml:lang="lat">F<hi rend="underline">aciam eos in Gentem unam</hi></foreign><hi rend="underline">,</hi> I <lb xml:id="l23"/>will make them one nation Ezek 37. 22. In reference to this inscription <lb xml:id="l24"/>&amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">thereby</add> to signify that her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> has finished a <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">great &amp; difficult</add> work <del type="strikethrough">of</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">an undertaking of</add> an 10<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">0</add> years standing I <lb xml:id="l25"/>propose the following Medal.</p>

MAII. <lb xml:id="l34"/>M<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">D</add><unclear reason="hand">C</unclear>VII</foreign>. <choice><orig><add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="largest">/</hi></add></orig><reg><lb type="intentional" xml:id="l35"/></reg></choice>In this designe the union is represented by the single crowns <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in two hands</add> by the Rose &amp; <lb xml:id="l36"/>Thistle upon one stalk, <add place="inline" indicator="no">by</add> the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">new</add> arms of great Britain upon the shield, &amp; <add place="inline" indicator="no">by</add> the two <lb xml:id="l37"/>Rivers <add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">T<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">h</add>ames<del type="cancelled">is</del> &amp; <del type="strikethrough">Boderia</del> Forth</add> uniting: for rivers were anciently the emblemes of Kingdom. <add place="inline" indicator="no">By</add> The <lb xml:id="l38"/>Motto, <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">w</del><hi rend="superscript">ch</hi> also expresses the union<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">the union is</add> <unclear reason="hand">refered</unclear> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">to</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">the union</del> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen as <del type="strikethrough">God</del> the minister <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">of heaven in this work</add>, &amp; although this motto yet</add> may at first seem flat, <del type="strikethrough">but</del> being com<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l39"/>pared <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">that on</add> the gold coynes of <choice><abbr>K</abbr><expan>King</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames I, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">&amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice></add> the Prophesy of Ezekiel</add> it</add> will <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">appear</add> very significant <del type="strikethrough">grave &amp; <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/> com</del><lb xml:id="l40"/><del type="cancelled">pr</del> comprehensive, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">pious</del></add> lively, pious</add> &amp; majestick, &amp; perhaps the most apposite of any that <lb xml:id="l41"/>can be thought of. A poetical Motto is <del type="strikethrough">too light</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">not so grave</add> for such an occasion.</p>

After<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><orig>3</orig><reg><hi rend="superscript">3</hi></reg></choice></add> th<del type="cancelled">is</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">e</add> union<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><orig>4</orig><reg><hi rend="superscript">4</hi></reg></choice></add>, England<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><orig>1</orig><reg><hi rend="superscript">1</hi></reg></choice></add> &amp; Scotland<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><orig>2</orig><reg><hi rend="superscript">2</hi></reg></choice></add> should be <lb xml:id="l44"/>rem<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>mbered no more, &amp; therefore in th<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">i</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del> Medal <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">they</add> should be only glanced at &amp; <lb xml:id="l45"/>nat made too conspicuous. However <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">for variety</add> I have caused t<del type="over"><unclear reason="del">o</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">w</add>o <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">or two</del></add> draughts <del type="strikethrough">of this kind</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of weoman</add> to be made <lb xml:id="l46"/>together <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">some</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">two</add> other<del type="cancelled">s</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">draughts</add> on the next pages, but prefer that above. The Draughts were <lb xml:id="l47"/>made in hast &amp; when the designe in general is resolved upon the Graver will be more exact.</p>

                <p xml:id="par9">How Cyrus dethroned <del type="strikethrough">Darius</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">his predecesoor</add> Herodotus tells at large excepting that he errs in <lb xml:id="l48"/>the name of the king. Cyaxeres according to Herodotus reigned 40 years &amp; his successor 35 <lb xml:id="l49"/>&amp; therefore Astyages the grandfather of Cyrus &amp; father of Cyaxeres was dead 75 years <lb xml:id="l50"/>before the reign of Cyrus <del type="strikethrough">that is about 4 or 5 years before the taking</del> of Nineveh.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par10"><del type="strikethrough">How Cyrus after he had dethroned his predecessor made war upon Crasus &amp; ca</del></p>
                
                
                
                <p xml:id="par11"><space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/><del type="cancelled">As the Mag</del> <del type="strikethrough">Zoroaster</del> In the sacred commentary of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Persian rites, <del type="strikethrough">is said to have</del> <lb xml:id="l51"/>these words are ascribed to Zoroaster: <foreign xml:lang="lat">Deus est accipitris capite.
