<p xml:id="par5">When you shew<choice><abbr>'d</abbr><expan>ed</expan></choice> me M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <hi rend="underline">Line's</hi> second Letter, I remember I told you, <lb xml:id="l7"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> I thought an answer in writing would be insignificant because <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l8"/>dispute was not about any ratiocination, but my veracity in relating <lb xml:id="l9"/>an experiment, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he de<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>ies will succeed as it is described in my <lb xml:id="l10"/>printed letters: For this is to be decided not by discourse, but new tryall <lb xml:id="l11"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> experiment. What it is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> imposes upon M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <hi rend="underline">Line</hi> I cannot <lb xml:id="l12"/>imagin, but I suspect he has not tryed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>exp<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>experiment</expan></choice> since he acquaint<lb xml:id="l13"/>ed himself <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> my Theory, but depends upon his old notions taken <lb xml:id="l14"/>up before he had any hint given to observe <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> figure of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> coloured <lb xml:id="l15"/>image. I shall desire him therefore, before he returns any <lb xml:id="l16"/>answer, to try it once more for his satisfaction &amp; that according <lb xml:id="l17"/>to this manner.</p>

<p xml:id="par6">Let him take any Prism &amp; hold it so that its axis may be <lb xml:id="l18"/>perpendicular to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> suns rays, &amp; in this posture let it be placed <lb xml:id="l19"/>as close as may be to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hole through <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun shines into a <lb xml:id="l20"/>dark room, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> hole may be about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> bigness of a pease. <lb xml:id="l21"/>Then let him turn <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prism slowly about its axis &amp; he shall <lb xml:id="l22"/>see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> colours move upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> opposite wall first towards that place <lb xml:id="l23"/>to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun's direct light would pass if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prism were taken away <lb xml:id="l24"/>&amp; then back again. When t<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">he</add>y <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>re in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> middle of these two contrary <lb xml:id="l25"/>motions, that is when they are nearest that place to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun's <lb xml:id="l26"/>direct <del type="cancelled">light would p<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> ray tends, there let him stop, for then are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l27"/>rays equally refracted on both sides <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">P</add>rism. But whereas M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Line thinks I tryed it in a cloudy <lb xml:id="l40"/>d<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>y &amp; placed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prism at a <choice><abbr>g<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>great</expan></choice> distance from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hole of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l41"/>window: <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> experiment will not succeed well if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> day be not <lb xml:id="l42"/>cleare &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prism placed close to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hole, or so neare <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">at least</add> that all <lb xml:id="l43"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun's light that comes from <supplied reason="damage" cert="high"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> h</supplied>ole may pass through <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prism <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">also,</fw><pb xml:id="p48v" n="48v" facs="#i39"/> also, so as to appear in a round form if intercepted by a paper immediately <lb xml:id="l44"/>after it has past <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prism.</p>

<p xml:id="par7">When M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Line has tryed this I could wish he <del type="over"><gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">w</add>ould proceed a little further <lb xml:id="l45"/>to try <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I calld <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <foreign xml:lang="lat">Experimentum Crucis</foreign>, seing (if I misremember not) <lb xml:id="l46"/>he <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="6"/></del> denies that as well as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other. For when he has tryed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l47"/>by his denying them I know he has not done yet as they should be tryed) I <lb xml:id="l48"/>presume he will rest satisfied.</p>

<p xml:id="par8">Three or four days after you gave me a sight of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Line's second <lb xml:id="l49"/>Letter, I remember I thereupon showd <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first of these two experiments <lb xml:id="l50"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Gentleman whom you found <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> me when you gave me that visit: <lb xml:id="l51"/>&amp; whilst I was showing it to him, <del type="cancelled">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hill</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#ho"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/>. <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/>.</del> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/>. <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/>.</del> A. It came to my hands but this week <lb xml:id="l68"/>the Gentleman by whom you sent it having not yet been at Cambridge but <lb xml:id="l69"/>transmitting it to me from Oxford.</del></p>
