                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><handShift new="#ho" scribe="Henry_Oldenburg"/>You see by the <unclear reason="faded" cert="low">i</unclear>nclosed, written to me by the Iesuite Pardie<unclear reason="damage" cert="medium">s</unclear> <lb xml:id="l1"/><choice><abbr>Proffess<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Professor</expan></choice> of <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mathematicks in the Colledge of Clermont at Paris <lb xml:id="l2"/>how nimble <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> sort of men is to animadvert vpon new theories <lb xml:id="l3"/>He being a person of some repute there, I doubt not but you <lb xml:id="l4"/>will expedite an answer for him <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">and <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice></add> in the same language, wherein <lb xml:id="l5"/>he writeth.</p>
                <p xml:id="par3">Besides him, there is Monsieur Hugenius, <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> hath also <lb xml:id="l6"/>read and considered <choice><sic>thesame</sic><corr>the same</corr></choice>, who giueth me this note <lb xml:id="l7"/>vpon it in his letter of April 9. <foreign xml:lang="lat">st. n; videl</foreign>.</p>
                <p xml:id="par4"><hi rend="underline"><foreign xml:lang="fre">Pour ce qui est Sela nouvelle Theorie de Monsieur <lb xml:id="l8"/>Newton touchant la lumiere et les couleurs, elle me paroit <lb xml:id="l9"/>fort ingenieuse; mais il faudra voir, si elle est compatible <lb xml:id="l10"/>auec toutes les experiences. Cependant i'ay estè bie<unclear reason="damage" cert="low">n</unclear> <gap reason="damage" extent="1" unit="words" cert="high"/> <lb xml:id="l11"/>de trouuer ce qu'il escrit touchant l'effet des verres e<supplied reason="damage" cert="low">t</supplied> <lb xml:id="l12"/>miroirs en matiere de Lunettes, ou ie voy qu'il a re<unclear reason="damage" cert="medium">m</unclear><supplied reason="damage" cert="low">arquè</supplied> <lb xml:id="l13"/>comme moy, le defaut dela refraction des verres convexes o<unclear reason="damage" cert="low">bj</unclear><supplied reason="damage" cert="low">ec</supplied><lb xml:id="l14"/>tifs à cause de l'inclinaison de leur deux surfaces.</foreign></hi></p>
                <p xml:id="par5"><choice><abbr>yr</abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> letter of march 30<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> was read before the R. Soc. on <lb xml:id="l15"/>Thursday last, and they commanded me to thank you in their <lb xml:id="l16"/>name for it, and for <choice><abbr>yr</abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> care of removing the inconveniences <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l17"/>may lye <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">st</hi></abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>yr</abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> reflecting Telescope. Some tryal will be made, I <lb xml:id="l18"/>hope, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a prismatical Chrystal, in stead of <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> smal oval specu<lb xml:id="l19"/>lum And Mr Cock is at worke for one of 4 feet, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">yet <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> both <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> speculums of me<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>al</add>; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we long <lb xml:id="l20"/>to see finisht, <del type="strikethrough">and</del> <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> we may try its performances.</p>
                <p xml:id="par6">The Transactions of March, wherein much is said of this Telescope <lb xml:id="l21"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>s</abbr><expan>yours</expan></choice>, is now abroad, and I hope, your carrier will call this week <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">at my house</add> <lb xml:id="l22"/>for one of you. It would be well, if your answer to Mr Hooks objec<lb xml:id="l23"/>tions could be ready, to be inserted in the Transactions of this present month, <lb xml:id="l24"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> will goe to the presse about 10 <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or 12</add> days hence.
