                <p rend="indent5" xml:id="par3">I fear you will be much surprized <lb xml:id="l1"/>at my very long delay in answering <lb xml:id="l2"/>your favour of <choice><abbr>Sep<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>September</expan></choice> last <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">I <lb xml:id="l3"/>beg of you to impute in some measure <lb xml:id="l4"/>to the constant hurry I have been</del> <add place="inline supralinear" indicator="no">is <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">hardly</unclear></add> in, but <lb xml:id="l5"/><del type="strikethrough">indeed cheifly</del> for my waiting for the <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">advice &amp;</add> <lb xml:id="l6"/>opinion of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac<del type="strikethrough">'s</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Newtons</add> friends in relation <lb xml:id="l7"/>to the monumental picture to his memory, <lb xml:id="l8"/>&amp; I assure you it is but very lately <lb xml:id="l9"/>that I could <del type="strikethrough">come to</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">fix upon</add> any <del type="strikethrough">determination <lb xml:id="l10"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I hope</del> <choice><sic>will</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <del type="strikethrough">prove as much to your <lb xml:id="l11"/>satisfaction</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">design &amp; I hope that resolved upon will please you as much</add> as it does <del type="strikethrough">to mine it <lb xml:id="l12"/>being <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">approved of as</add> agreeable to the taste of all the <lb xml:id="l13"/>learned here</del> every one here, it is <lb xml:id="l14"/>as follows –</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">It is proposed to have the monument <lb xml:id="l15"/><del type="strikethrough">in</del> not in any Church <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">because it is impossible to express all his <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">natural</add> discoveries in so li<supplied cert="medium" reason="damage">ttle</supplied> a place</add> but in the <lb xml:id="l16"/>open air <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; by the seaside <del type="strikethrough">by the sea side</del></add> as some of those <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">are <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></add> you haue <lb xml:id="l17"/>already done – <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; by the sea side for a <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">hansom</unclear> w</del></add> — <add place="inline" indicator="no">&amp; by an arm of the sea</add></p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">On the left hand a <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">stately</add> Monument of the finest <lb xml:id="l18"/>architecture with the proper symbols <lb xml:id="l19"/>&amp; attributes belonging to him <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I furnished <lb xml:id="l20"/>you so amply with already <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I leave <pb xml:id="p002" n="2"/> entirely to you – I would have the rest <lb xml:id="l21"/>of the picture in some measure resemble <lb xml:id="l22"/>the school of Athens – Viz —</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6">In one place a groupe of Philosophers <lb xml:id="l23"/>looking on a scroll with a Mathema<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l24"/>tical figure upon the ground <del type="strikethrough">with <lb xml:id="l25"/>Admiration</del> – at the head of these <lb xml:id="l26"/>I would have Pythagoras Plato &amp; <lb xml:id="l27"/>Galileo <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">looking with admiration &amp;</add> <choice><sic>&amp;</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> Descartes with a dejected <lb xml:id="l28"/>countenance, as being concerned for <lb xml:id="l29"/>the destruction of his system of <lb xml:id="l30"/>Phylosophy – I would have Aristotle <lb xml:id="l31"/>who it is said threw himself into <lb xml:id="l32"/>the Euripus because he could not <lb xml:id="l33"/>solve the nature of its tide looking <lb xml:id="l34"/>upon the sea rolling to the shore <lb xml:id="l35"/>&amp; pointing with admiration to <lb xml:id="l36"/>a scroll with a problem of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac's <lb xml:id="l37"/>upon it shewing the cause of the <lb xml:id="l38"/><del type="strikethrough">flux</del> tides – I would have him near <lb xml:id="l39"/>the other Philosophers because he be<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l40"/>longs to them, &amp; if it could be expressed <lb xml:id="l41"/><del type="strikethrough">triumphing over</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">he should in some measure triumph over <del type="strikethrough">the</del></add> Descartes who had <lb xml:id="l42"/>overturned <add place="inline" indicator="no">t</add>h<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><del type="strikethrough">s</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">aristotelian</add> system <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">upon the destruction of his by <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> I. N.</add> The next <lb xml:id="l43"/>groupe should be of Astronomers <pb xml:id="p003" n="3"/> &amp; at the head of these I would place <lb xml:id="l44"/>Hipparchus Ptolemy Copernicus <lb xml:id="l45"/>Tycho Brahe Kepler &amp; Ulug Beighi <lb xml:id="l46"/><del type="strikethrough">an Arabian Prince / one of them <lb xml:id="l47"/>Viz.</del> Kepler should be holding up <lb xml:id="l48"/><del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>n his hand a celestial globe <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l49"/>the others should be looking upon <lb xml:id="l50"/>with admiration – You will find such <lb xml:id="l51"/>a groupe in the picture of the school <lb xml:id="l52"/>of Athens by Raphael <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> without <lb xml:id="l53"/>doubt you have copies or prints <lb xml:id="l54"/>of at Venice – The next groupe <lb xml:id="l55"/><del type="strikethrough">sh</del> &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> should be the least <lb xml:id="l56"/>conspicuous should be a groupe <lb xml:id="l57"/>of Geometers with Euclid Archime<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l58"/>des &amp; Apollonius at the head <lb xml:id="l59"/>of them looking with admiration <lb xml:id="l60"/>upon a scroll upon the ground <lb xml:id="l61"/>with geometrical problems upon it <lb xml:id="l62"/>On the right hand of the picture <lb xml:id="l63"/>should be the arch of a rainbow <lb xml:id="l64"/>in the sky, &amp; some persons looking <lb xml:id="l65"/><del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>thro<hi rend="superscript">u</hi></abbr><expan>through</expan></choice> a prism</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">upon it with their naked eye at the sky not at the rainbow</add> &amp; others <choice><abbr>thro<hi rend="superscript">u</hi></abbr><expan>through</expan></choice> a <lb xml:id="l66"/>reflecting Telescope <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> you have but <lb xml:id="l67"/>neither the one nor the other must look at the <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">rainbow</add></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">at some distant object</add> <pb xml:id="p004" n="4"/> behind the whole, there may be a <lb xml:id="l68"/>beautiful landskip &amp; lontananza –</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par7">You will perceive it is not designed to <lb xml:id="l69"/>have any genij or poetical fantastical <lb xml:id="l70"/>beings in these groupes so they are <lb xml:id="l71"/>all left <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to be made use of</add> as you shall think proper <lb xml:id="l72"/>about the Monument, but it will be <lb xml:id="l73"/>absolutely necessary to have the <del type="strikethrough">parti</del> <lb xml:id="l74"/>Philosophers Astronomers &amp; Geometers <lb xml:id="l75"/>I have <del type="strikethrough">mentioned</del> placed at the head <lb xml:id="l76"/>of the 3 groupes to be <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">very</add> particularly <lb xml:id="l77"/>described for without that the <lb xml:id="l78"/>whole beauty of the design will <lb xml:id="l79"/>be lost – You can be at no difficulty <lb xml:id="l80"/>to get the faces &amp; habits of Pythago<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l81"/>ras Plato Aristotle Euclid &amp; <lb xml:id="l82"/>Archimedes <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Ptolemy &amp; Hipparchus</add> &amp; Apollonius because <lb xml:id="l83"/>there are number of books with <lb xml:id="l84"/>prints of them <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">from old statues or intaglios</add> in almost every <lb xml:id="l85"/>library – <del type="strikethrough">In th</del> Tycho Brahe was <lb xml:id="l86"/>Knight of the Elephant &amp; is always <lb xml:id="l87"/>painted with a flat nose having as it is <lb xml:id="l88"/>said been unfortunate in his amours <lb xml:id="l89"/>but in the life of him &amp; Copernicus <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">writt by Gassendus</add> you <lb xml:id="l90"/>will see their pictures very well done &amp; in <del type="strikethrough">the</del> Helvetius's <foreign xml:lang="lat">Prodromus Astronomiæ</foreign> <pb xml:id="p005" n="5"/> <del type="strikethrough">your</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is a book in all libraries <lb xml:id="l91"/>you will find that <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of Galilæo &amp;</add> of Ulug Beighi <lb xml:id="l92"/>an arabian Prince with short hair <lb xml:id="l93"/>&amp; mustachios hanging down, &amp; Kepler <lb xml:id="l94"/>who was Astronomer to an Emperour <lb xml:id="l95"/>of Germany <del type="strikethrough">&amp; Copernicus who was <lb xml:id="l96"/>an Ecclesiastick</del> – As for Descartes <lb xml:id="l97"/>who<add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">se face</unclear></del></add> must be very particularly <del type="strikethrough">described</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">marked out <del type="strikethrough">in his proper habit</del></add> <lb xml:id="l98"/>you will find his picture before his <lb xml:id="l99"/>own works &amp; in Perrault's <foreign xml:lang="fre">hommes <lb xml:id="l100"/>illustres</foreign> – As to the Mathematical <lb xml:id="l101"/>problems &amp; the particular figures <lb xml:id="l102"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">of a Comet &amp;c –</add> upon the celestial globe I will have <lb xml:id="l103"/>them done here afterwards &amp; only <lb xml:id="l104"/>desire you will have the scrolls <lb xml:id="l105"/><del type="strikethrough">placed, &amp; done</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp; the shape of the globe painted –</add> –</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par8">This you perceive <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice></del> will be a <del type="strikethrough">spec</del> <lb xml:id="l106"/>picture in character &amp; only applicable <lb xml:id="l107"/>to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> I. Newton <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is what will give <lb xml:id="l108"/>it it's value with me, &amp; I am perswa<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l109"/>ded you will forgive me if I tell <lb xml:id="l110"/>you that it has been thought your <lb xml:id="l111"/>other pictures <choice><sic>on</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> <del type="strikethrough">the same design</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi></abbr><expan>though</expan></choice> finely painted</add> are <lb xml:id="l112"/><del type="strikethrough">wa</del> defective in that respect – &amp; I have <pb xml:id="p006" n="6"/> already seen two of them <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are <lb xml:id="l113"/>now in the possession</del> turned to a <lb xml:id="l114"/>quite different <del type="strikethrough">use</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">design</add> from what they <lb xml:id="l115"/>were intended I mean those for the <add place="inline" indicator="no">late</add> <lb xml:id="l116"/><choice><abbr>D.</abbr><expan>Duke</expan></choice> of Devonshire &amp; <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Cloudesley <lb xml:id="l117"/>Shovel the first of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is turned into <lb xml:id="l118"/>a Brutus &amp; the other into a <lb xml:id="l119"/>Roman Admiral by My Lord <lb xml:id="l120"/>Bingley in whose possession they now <lb xml:id="l121"/>are – The sketch you intended <lb xml:id="l122"/>for <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> I. Newton <del type="strikethrough">is equally</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">may I hope <del type="strikethrough">may</del> very easily be</add> appli<del type="over">ed</del><add place="over" indicator="no">cable</add> <lb xml:id="l123"/>to any <del type="strikethrough">learned</del> other great men <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; if not I shall willingly pay <del type="cancelled">any</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the</add> charges of the little alterations that can be wanting but</add> I <lb xml:id="l124"/>can not think of having it on any <lb xml:id="l125"/>account as a monumental picture <lb xml:id="l126"/>to him, <del type="strikethrough">&amp; would rather</del> nor indeed <lb xml:id="l127"/>can I ever be satisfied <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or pleased</add> with any <lb xml:id="l128"/>but one after the design I haue <lb xml:id="l129"/>now sent you, if you will be so <lb xml:id="l130"/>good as to superintend the execution <lb xml:id="l131"/>of this I shall be much obliged to you, <lb xml:id="l132"/>but it has been so thoroughly considered <lb xml:id="l133"/>here by the best judges &amp; is so much <lb xml:id="l134"/>to my own fancy that <del type="strikethrough"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">would</add> <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">not</unclear></del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi></abbr><expan>though</expan></choice> the ornaments &amp; execution must be left to the painters I would not</add> <lb xml:id="l135"/>haue any material alterations made <lb xml:id="l136"/>in <del type="strikethrough">it</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the main design</add> – <del type="blockStrikethrough">If you think it is not a proper one nor easily to be executed <del type="strikethrough">I hope you</del></del> <pb xml:id="p007" n="7"/> <del type="blockStrikethrough">will pardon the trouble I have given you <lb xml:id="l137"/>&amp; reimburse you</del></p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par9">I <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">must</add> likewise desire that the picture may <lb xml:id="l138"/>be much broader than it is high, <lb xml:id="l139"/>because I have no room in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I could <lb xml:id="l140"/>possibly put one of the same heigth <lb xml:id="l141"/>with those sent the <choice><abbr>D.</abbr><expan>Duke</expan></choice> of Richmond <lb xml:id="l142"/><del type="strikethrough">if</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">I would have</add> the heigth of th<del type="over">em</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ose</add> be the breadth of <lb xml:id="l143"/>this &amp; the breadth of those the heigth <lb xml:id="l144"/>of this ––– I <del type="strikethrough">am much obliged</del> <choice><sic>to</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">beg the favour of</del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">desire</add> you to thank</add> <lb xml:id="l145"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Smith <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in my name</add> for the care he took of the pictures by Canaletto &amp; Cimeroli; &amp; <lb xml:id="l146"/>wish I could in return be any way <lb xml:id="l147"/>seviceable to him here – I must beg <lb xml:id="l148"/>the favour of you <del type="strikethrough">to bespe</del> or M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Smith <lb xml:id="l149"/>to bespeak 3 pictures more of Canaletto <lb xml:id="l150"/>they are for the Duke of Devonshire &amp; for <lb xml:id="l151"/>another friend I would have <del type="strikethrough">two</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">one</add> of <lb xml:id="l152"/>them four feet <del type="strikethrough">long <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">wide</add> &amp;</del> in width &amp; <lb xml:id="l153"/>two feet &amp; four inches deep, &amp; the <lb xml:id="l154"/>other two three feet <del type="cancelled">8</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp; eight</add> inches wide &amp; two <lb xml:id="l155"/>feet &amp; one inch deep – I shall be much <lb xml:id="l156"/>obliged to you if you will overlook <lb xml:id="l157"/>the doing of them &amp; see they be thorough<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l158"/>ly finished &amp; the charge of them shall <lb xml:id="l159"/>be faithfully repaid <del type="strikethrough">you</del> whenever it is <lb xml:id="l160"/>drawn for – I have some thoughts of writing <pb xml:id="p008" n="8"/> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton's life my self.
