<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1">Born on <choice><abbr>X<hi rend="superscript">mas</hi></abbr><expan>Christmas</expan></choice> day 1642. Came to the Uni<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l3"/>versity in 61.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">In 63 being at Sturbridge fair bought a <lb xml:id="l4"/>book of Astrology, out of a curiosity to <lb xml:id="l5"/>see what there was in it.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">Read in it till he came to a figure of the <lb xml:id="l6"/>heavens which he could not understand <lb xml:id="l7"/>for want of being acquainted with Trigonometry.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">Bought a book of Trigonometry, but was not <lb xml:id="l8"/>able to understand the Demonstrations.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">Got Euclid to fit himself for understanding <lb xml:id="l9"/>the ground of Trigonometry. –</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6">Read only the titles of the propositions, which he <lb xml:id="l10"/>found so easy to understand that he wondred how <lb xml:id="l11"/>any body would amuse themselves to write any <lb xml:id="l12"/>demonstrations of them. Began to change his <lb xml:id="l13"/>mind when he read that Parallellograms upon <lb xml:id="l14"/>the same base &amp; between the same Parallells <lb xml:id="l15"/>are equal, &amp; that other proposition, that in a <lb xml:id="l16"/>right angled Triangle the square of the Hypothenuse <lb xml:id="l17"/>is equal to the squares of the two other sides.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par7">Began again to read Euclid with more attention <lb xml:id="l18"/>than he had done before &amp; went through it.</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par8">Read Oughtreds which he understood tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi> not <lb xml:id="l19"/>entirely, he having some difficulties about <lb xml:id="l20"/>what the Author calls <foreign xml:lang="lat">Scala secundi et <lb xml:id="l21"/>tertii gradus</foreign>, relating to the solution of <lb xml:id="l22"/>quadratick <choice><sic>Cubick</sic><corr>and Cubick</corr></choice> Equations. – Took Descartes's <lb xml:id="l23"/>Geometry in hand, tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi> he had been told itt <lb xml:id="l24"/>would be very difficult, read some few pages <lb xml:id="l25"/>in it, then stop't began again, went a little <lb xml:id="l26"/>farther than the first time, stopt again, went <lb xml:id="l27"/>back again to the beginning, read on till by <lb xml:id="l28"/>degrees he made himself master of the whole, <lb xml:id="l29"/>to that degree that he understood Descartes's <lb xml:id="l30"/>Geometry better than he had done Euclid.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par9">Read Euclid again &amp; then DesCartes's Geometry <lb xml:id="l31"/>for a second time. Read next D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Wallis's <lb xml:id="l32"/><foreign xml:lang="lat">Arithmetica Infinitorum</foreign>, &amp; on the occasion <lb xml:id="l33"/>of a certain interpolation for the quadrature <lb xml:id="l34"/>of the circle found that admirable Theorem <lb xml:id="l35"/>for raising a Binomial to a power given. <lb xml:id="l36"/>But before that time a little after reading <lb xml:id="l37"/>DesCartes Geometry, writt many things <lb xml:id="l38"/>concerning the vortices Axes Diameters of <lb xml:id="l39"/>Curves, which afterwards gave rise to that <lb xml:id="l40"/>excellent tract <foreign xml:lang="lat">de Curvis secundi generis</foreign>. In 65 &amp; <lb xml:id="l41"/>66 began to find the method of Fluxions, and writt <lb xml:id="l42"/>several curious problems relating to that method bearing <lb xml:id="l43"/>that date which <choice><sic>weere</sic><corr>were</corr></choice> seen by me above 25 year <lb xml:id="l44"/>ago. In 65 being in the country in a garden, <lb xml:id="l45"/>it came into his thought, that the power of gravity <lb xml:id="l46"/>was not limited to a certain distance from the <lb xml:id="l47"/>earth, but that this power would exert it self <lb xml:id="l48"/>at any distance from it, &amp; even would reach as <lb xml:id="l49"/>far as the Moon, then he drew this conclusion <lb xml:id="l50"/>that if it was true that this power reached as <lb xml:id="l51"/>far as the Moon, it was very likely that this <lb xml:id="l52"/>power <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>of</sic><corr>or</corr></choice> force of gravitation towards the earth <lb xml:id="l53"/>was what contained the Moon in her orbit, <lb xml:id="l54"/>whereupon he fell a calculating what would be <lb xml:id="l55"/>the effect of that supposition, but he found <lb xml:id="l56"/>himself disappointed for a while, the reason <lb xml:id="l57"/>of which was that he took it for granted that <lb xml:id="l58"/>a degree of the earth did contain 60 miles <lb xml:id="l59"/>exactly, which made it that his calculation <lb xml:id="l60"/>did not agree with the Theory, but he entertained <lb xml:id="l61"/>a notion that with the force of gravity, there might <lb xml:id="l62"/>be a mixture of that force which the Moon would <lb xml:id="l63"/>have if it was carried along in a vortex, <lb xml:id="l64"/>but when the Tract of Picard's of the measure <lb xml:id="l65"/>of the earth came out, he began his calculations <lb xml:id="l66"/>anew, &amp; found it perfectly agreeable to the Theory. <lb xml:id="l67"/>I beleive we may gather from the Transactions <lb xml:id="l68"/>an account of a dispute that he had with Linus <lb xml:id="l69"/>a Jesuit of Liege concerning his discovery of light <pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">2r</fw> &amp; Colours <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> would be very entertaining.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par10">In 1673 D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hook writt to him to send him <lb xml:id="l70"/>something new for the transactions, whereupon <lb xml:id="l71"/>he sent him a little dissertation to confute that <lb xml:id="l72"/>co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>on objection which is, that if it were true that <lb xml:id="l73"/>the Earth moved from West to East, all falling bodies <lb xml:id="l74"/>would be left to the West, &amp; maintained on <lb xml:id="l75"/>the contrary they <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>s</sic><corr>would</corr></choice> fall a little Eastward, &amp; <lb xml:id="l76"/>having described a curve with his hand to repre<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l77"/>sent the motion of a falling body, he drew a <lb xml:id="l78"/>negligent stroke with his pen, from whence D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l79"/>Hook took occasion to imagine that he meant <lb xml:id="l80"/>the Curve would be a Spiral, whereupon the <choice><abbr>D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Doctor</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l81"/>writt to him that the Curve would be an <lb xml:id="l82"/>Ellipsis &amp; that the body would move according <lb xml:id="l83"/>to Kepler's notion <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> gave him an occasion <lb xml:id="l84"/>to examine the thing thoroughly &amp; for the foundation <lb xml:id="l85"/>of the Calculus he intended laid down this pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l86"/>position that the areas described in equal times <lb xml:id="l87"/>were equal, which tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi> assumed by Kepler was <lb xml:id="l88"/>not by him demonstrated, of which demonstration <lb xml:id="l89"/>the first glory is due to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac. In 1684 <lb xml:id="l90"/>D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Halley came to visit him at Cambridge, after they <lb xml:id="l91"/>had been some time together, the <choice><abbr>D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Doctor</expan></choice> asked him <lb xml:id="l92"/>what he thought the curve would be that would be <lb xml:id="l93"/>described by the Planets supposing the force of <lb xml:id="l94"/>attraction towards the Sun to be reciprocal to the square <lb xml:id="l95"/>of their distance from it. <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac replied immediately <lb xml:id="l96"/>that it would be an Ellipsis, the Doctor struck with <pb xml:id="p003r" n="3r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">3r</fw> * joy &amp; amazement asked him how he knew it, <lb xml:id="l97"/>why saith he I have calculated it, whereupon <lb xml:id="l98"/>Dr Halley asked him for his calculation without <lb xml:id="l99"/>any farther delay, <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac looked among his <lb xml:id="l100"/>papers but could not find it, but he promised <lb xml:id="l101"/>him to renew it; &amp; then to send it him, <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l102"/>Isaac in order to make good his promise fell to <lb xml:id="l103"/>work again, but he could not come to that conclusion <lb xml:id="l104"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he thought he had before examined with care, <lb xml:id="l105"/>however he attempted a new way which tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi> longer <lb xml:id="l106"/>than the first, brought him again to his former <lb xml:id="l107"/>conclusion, then he examined carefully what might <lb xml:id="l108"/>be the reason why the calculation he had <lb xml:id="l109"/>undertaken before did not prove right, &amp; he <lb xml:id="l110"/>found that having drawn an Ellipsis coursely <lb xml:id="l111"/>with his own hand, he had drawn the two Axes <lb xml:id="l112"/>of the Curve, instead of drawing two Diameters <lb xml:id="l113"/>somewhat inclined to one another; whereby <choice><sic>be</sic><corr>he</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l114"/>might have fixed his imagination to any two <lb xml:id="l115"/>conjugate diameters, which was requisite he <lb xml:id="l116"/>should do, that being perceived, he made both <lb xml:id="l117"/>his calculations agree together.</p>
<p xml:id="par11">After this D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Halley was (I think) sent down to Cambridge by the Royal Society to prevail with <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac to print his discoveries <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> gave rise to the Principia —</p>
