Secondly it is to be noted that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> vowes here made were <lb xml:id="l187"/>not extemporary oaths or protestations but solemn vows: for <lb xml:id="l188"/>upon being reproved for their Idolatry they said, surely we <lb xml:id="l189"/>will perform <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> vows <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have vowed to burn incense <lb xml:id="l190"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven. Their swearing by Gods name <lb xml:id="l206"/>has here a special relation to their vows to commit <lb xml:id="l207"/>wickednes: for God does not say in general: Because ye <lb xml:id="l208"/>worship <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven therefore I will be no longer <lb xml:id="l209"/>your god; but because ye have made such wicked vows <lb xml:id="l210"/>as these are therefore ye shall be cut of that ye <lb xml:id="l211"/>may use my name no longer to swear by. This there<lb xml:id="l212"/>fore was their sin of swearing by his name that they <lb xml:id="l213"/>sware solemnly by it to commit their abominations: when <lb xml:id="l214"/>it is evident that they accounted him their <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">proper &amp;</add> principal God.<anchor xml:id="n007r-01"/> <note place="p006v" target="#n007r-01">See Micah <del type="over">2</del><add place="over" indicator="no">3</add>.9, 11 <space extent="3" unit="chars" dim="horizontal"/> &amp;</note></p>
<p xml:id="par7">To proceed <del type="strikethrough">now</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">on</add> to some further considerations: the <lb xml:id="l215"/>truth of the assertion that Israel worshipped the true God <fw type="catch" place="bottomLeft">&amp;</fw><pb xml:id="p008r" n="8r"/><fw place="topRight" type="pag">8</fw> <supplied reason="omitted" source="catchword" resp="#jy">&amp;</supplied> fals Gods together may appear by considering <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> designe <lb xml:id="l216"/>of Ieroboams proceeding when he set up the calves to be <lb xml:id="l217"/>worshipped. for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he instituted conti<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del>nued till <lb xml:id="l218"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Captivity, that short persecution of Iezebel per<lb xml:id="l219"/>haps only excepted, &amp; therefore was the same <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> that ex<lb xml:id="l220"/>ercised next before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persecution, only <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> this difference that <lb xml:id="l221"/>they were then become more abominable by adding forreign <lb xml:id="l222"/>Gods to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> calves.
