Of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Socrates a</del> These things being indifferent in their <lb xml:id="l4"/>nature the Apostles left the churches at liberty about them, &amp; every <lb xml:id="l5"/>Church set her self such rules as she thought fit. <del type="strikethrough">Whence it came to pass</del> <lb xml:id="l6"/><add indicator="yes" place="inline"><del type="strikethrough">Particularly by</del> <add place="inline" indicator="no">For</add> Socrates &amp; Sozomen relate at large that <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in</add> their days &amp; long before</add> <del type="strikethrough">that</del> there was great variety in the times of keeping Easter &amp; Lent, &amp; <lb xml:id="l7"/>in the number of weeks &amp; days in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> week in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they fasted in Lent &amp; <lb xml:id="l8"/>in the sorts of meat from <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they absteined in fasting, &amp; as great <lb xml:id="l9"/>variety in the Collects, <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">&amp; times of celebrating <del type="cancelled">of</del> the Eucharist &amp; in other circumstances of</add> <del type="strikethrough">&amp; times of <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/> &amp;</add> celebrating the Eucharist &amp; expounding <lb xml:id="l10"/>the scriptures so that amongst all the Churches scarce two agreed perfectly in <lb xml:id="l11"/>the rites of praying besides other &amp; in cir &amp; in other <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/></add> circumstances of wor <lb xml:id="l12"/>religion</del> <lb xml:id="l13"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">worship</add> so that to put in writing all the <del type="strikethrough">forms</del> rites <del type="strikethrough">of the Churches in single</del> <lb xml:id="l14"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> were variously observed by the Churches in every city &amp; province, saith <lb xml:id="l15"/>Socrates, would be very difficult or rather impossible. And yet the Churches kept in <lb xml:id="l16"/>communion <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> one another notwithstanding all these differences. Men might vary in <lb xml:id="l17"/>rites &amp; ceremonies, <del type="strikethrough">men might vary</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">They might vary <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del></add> in opinions not necessary to Baptism. The union <lb xml:id="l18"/>of the Church consisted in one faith. By one baptism into that faith, men were admitted <lb xml:id="l19"/>into one church &amp; continued in it by living according to that faith.</p>
<p xml:id="par2">Also auricular confession &amp; pennance  began to be in use soon after the <del type="strikethrough">days <lb xml:id="l20"/>of Iulian</del> persecution of Decius &amp; were in use in almost all the Churches in <lb xml:id="l21"/>the <del type="strikethrough">4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> century till</del> latter end of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> century <del type="strikethrough">till Nectarius <choice><abbr>B<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Bishop</expan></choice> of Constantine <lb xml:id="l22"/><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="words"/></del> untill a matron  in doing pennance in a Church <del type="strikethrough">confessed that</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">at Constantine was defiled by</add> a Deacon <del type="cancelled">by</del> <lb xml:id="l23"/>&amp; by confessing the crime brought a reflexion upon that Church, &amp; <del type="cancelled">Nectarius</del> <lb xml:id="l24"/>thereupon Nectarius <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Bishop of <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">Constantinople</add> abolished <del type="strikethrough">the use of</del> Confessors in that <lb xml:id="l25"/>city, &amp; several other bishops followed his example in other cities.</p>
<p xml:id="par3">Lucian <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Martyr who suffered <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">at Antioch</add> in the 10<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> persecution <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">A.C. 312</add> left a creed in writing <lb xml:id="l26"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was subscribed by the Council of Antioch A.C. 341 &amp; again by the Council <lb xml:id="l27"/>of Seleucia A.C. 359 &amp; is as follows. <foreign xml:lang="lat">Credimus</foreign></p>
<p xml:id="par4">We are not commanded in scripture to worship him as God Almighty (for by the <del type="strikethrough">first the</del> <lb xml:id="l28"/>first <choice><abbr>comm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>commandment</expan></choice> we are to have no other Gods in <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> worship then him who <del type="strikethrough">in</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">according to</add> the fourth <lb xml:id="l29"/><choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Commandment</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">is s</del> made heaven &amp; earth &amp; the Sea) but we are to worship him <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; give him honour &amp; glory</add> in respect of <lb xml:id="l30"/>his humanity. Because he humbled himself to death even the death of the cross there<lb xml:id="l31"/>fore God <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">hath highly exalted him &amp;</add> g<del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>ve<add indicator="no" place="inline">n</add> him a name above every name that at the name of Iesus every <lb xml:id="l32"/>kne should bow, <del type="cancelled" extent="1" unit="chars"/> of things in heaven &amp; earth &amp; under the earth &amp; that every tongue <lb xml:id="l33"/>should confess that Iesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father. <lb xml:id="l34"/>We are therefore to bow to him as the Lord Iesus Christ <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Prince of the kings of the earth</add>. Vnto him that loved <lb xml:id="l35"/>us &amp; <del type="cancelled">ga</del> washed us from our sins in his own blood &amp; hath made us kings and Priests <lb xml:id="l36"/>unto God even his father to him be glory &amp; dominion for ever &amp; ever. We are <lb xml:id="l37"/>to worship him give him glory as the Lamb of God who <del type="strikethrough">redee</del> was slain for us</p>
<p xml:id="par5">In <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">all</add> our prayers we must have but one God and one Mediator between God &amp; man the <lb xml:id="l38"/>man Christ Iesus <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; we must not slight his Mediatorship if we would be saved</del>.</add>. <add place="inline" indicator="no">2</add> In that day saith he ye shall ask me nothing, whatsoever ye <lb xml:id="l39"/>shall <supplied reason="omitted">ask</supplied> the father in my name he will do it for you. <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">3</add> If we would have our <choice><sic>petions</sic><corr>petitions</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l40"/>granted we must not neglect the mediatorship of the man Christ Iesus. By the <lb xml:id="l41"/>first <choice><abbr>commandm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>commandment</expan></choice> we <del type="strikethrough">must</del> are to have no other Gods then <add place="inline" indicator="no">t</add>h<del type="over">im</del><add place="over" indicator="no">at</add> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">God</add> who accord<lb xml:id="l42"/>ing to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fourth <choice><abbr>commandm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>commandment</expan></choice> made heaven &amp; earth, but we not forbidden <lb xml:id="l43"/>to have a mediator between God and Man the Man Christ Iesus, we are <lb xml:id="l44"/>not forbidden <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">to have him for our Lord &amp; King or</add> to give him that <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">worship &amp;</add> honour &amp; glory <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is due to him <del type="strikethrough">as our <lb xml:id="l45"/>Lord and King</del> on that account. The Iews who were taught to <del type="strikethrough">have</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">worship</add> but one God <lb xml:id="l46"/>were also taught to <del type="cancelled">h</del> expect a king &amp; the Christians are taught to worship <lb xml:id="l47"/>the same God &amp; to beleive that Iesus is that King. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">For they are to</add> <hi rend="underline">beleive in one God <add indicator="yes" place="inline"> the father Almighty</add> <lb xml:id="l48"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">the maker of heaven &amp; earth &amp;</add> <choice><sic>&amp;</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> in one Lord Iesus Christ</hi>. And if <del type="strikethrough">we are he is we</del> he is <del type="over">ou</del><add place="over" indicator="no">thei</add>r lord &amp; king <del type="over">w</del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add>ey <lb xml:id="l49"/>may certainly without idolatry give him that worship which is <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="20"/> <lb xml:id="l50"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">the same</del></add> due to him as <del type="over">ou</del><add place="over" indicator="no">thei</add>r Lord &amp; king &amp; <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> it is <del type="over">ou</del><add place="over" indicator="no">thei</add>r duty to give him such worship; not <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l51"/>worship of an ordinary king but <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is due to him as the king of kings <lb xml:id="l52"/>&amp; Lord of Lords, <del type="strikethrough">the immortal being of glory,</del> the supreme king <del type="strikethrough">next unde</del> over <lb xml:id="l53"/>all the creation next under God Almighty, the King who sits at the right hand of <lb xml:id="l54"/>God the father &amp; is therefore next to him in glory, the Lamb of God whose eyes are the <lb xml:id="l55"/>seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth &amp; who alone of all beings in heaven &amp; earth <lb xml:id="l56"/>&amp; under the earth was <del type="strikethrough">found</del> worthy to receive the book of prophesy from the right hand of <del type="strikethrough">him</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">God</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>f.</abbr><expan>father</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l57"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">&amp;</add> <del type="cancelled" extent="1" unit="chars"/> whose testimony is the spirit of prophesy &amp; who is therefore <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">called faithfull &amp; true witness &amp;</add> the word of God, that is, his Oracle <pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/> 
the express image or oracle of <del type="strikethrough">God</del> the invisible God, [in whom the fulness of the Godhead dwelleth <lb xml:id="l58"/>bodily,] whose testimony is the spirit of prohesy &amp; who is therefore called the faithful &amp; true <lb xml:id="l59"/>witness &amp; the Word of God. To this great king, this visible image of the invisible we are <lb xml:id="l60"/>to give suitable worship. We are not <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">forbidden by the first <choice><abbr>commandm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>commandment</expan></choice></del></add> to worship him as the God Almighty who created <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l61"/>heaven &amp; earth, <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">(This would be to deny the father and the Son)</add> but we are to worship <supplied reason="omitted">him</supplied> as the redeemer of the world <add indicator="yes" place="inline">the Lord Iesus Christ the <choice><abbr>Mess.</abbr><expan>Messiah</expan></choice></add> <del type="strikethrough">The judge of all flesh</del>, <lb xml:id="l62"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Prince</add> the mediator between God &amp; man the man Christ Iesus.<space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/></p>
<p xml:id="par6">Thus the Creed in describing the persons of the father &amp; Son directs what worship <lb xml:id="l63"/>we are to give to each. We must worship the father as <del type="cancelled">Go the</del> God, the Son as <del type="cancelled">the</del> Lord <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; Christ</add> <lb xml:id="l64"/>the father as the father almighty the first author of all things who hath life &amp; all knowledge <lb xml:id="l65"/>&amp; power in himself originally <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; cannot dye</add> the Son as the son of God who <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">hath</add> received life and knowledge &amp; <lb xml:id="l66"/>power from the <del type="strikethrough">father, the</del> will of the father &amp; was slain &amp; exalted to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> right hand of God</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par7">of things in heaven &amp; earth &amp; under the earth &amp; every tongue confess that Iesus <lb xml:id="l67"/>Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father. All the worship <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we are directed <lb xml:id="l68"/>in scripture to give to Iesus Christ, respects his death &amp; exaltation <del type="strikethrough">over all</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">to the right hand of God</add> &amp; is given <lb xml:id="l69"/>to him as <del type="strikethrough">our</del> Lord &amp; King <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; tends</add> to the glory of God the father. Should we give <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Father <lb xml:id="l70"/>that worship <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is due to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Son we should <lb xml:id="l71"/>be Patripassians &amp; should we give the Son that worship <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is due to <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the father as <del type="strikethrough">the father</del></add> God <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> the <lb xml:id="l72"/>father Almighty the creator of heaven &amp; earth <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">our worship would not tend to the glory of God the father but injure <del type="over">the</del><add place="over" indicator="no">him</add> <del type="strikethrough">father</del> &amp;</add> we should be Idolaters &amp; in both <lb xml:id="l73"/>cases we should practically deny the father and the Son. We must be careful there<lb xml:id="l74"/>fore to give to each his proper worship, such a worship as is suitable to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> character <lb xml:id="l75"/>given to each <del type="strikethrough">of them</del> in the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">primitive</add> Creed, &amp; then we are safe. <del type="strikethrough">We must beleive also <lb xml:id="l76"/>that Iesus Christ shall come.</del> We may give <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">blessing &amp;</add> honour &amp; glory <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; power unto</add> God &amp; the Lamb but <lb xml:id="l77"/>it must be in different respects, to God as he is the father Almighty who created <lb xml:id="l78"/>all things &amp; to the Lamb as he was slain <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">for us</add> &amp; washed away our sins in his own blood &amp; <lb xml:id="l79"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">for humbling himself</add> is <add indicator="no" place="infralinear">now</add> exalted to the right hand of God <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Father.</p>

<p xml:id="par9">Iesus Christ shall come to judge the quick &amp; the dead – He comes to judgement not <lb xml:id="l80"/>from the right hand of God but from heaven. For he sits at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> right hand of God not <lb xml:id="l81"/>only in this world but also in that <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is to come untill all enemies <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">shall</add> be put under his <lb xml:id="l82"/>feet. And this we must beleive that we may pray for the coming of his kingdom</p>
