Amphilochius of Iconium, Chrysostom, <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/> Hilary</del> Eusebius <lb xml:id="l13"/>Vercellensis, Hilary, Ambrose,</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Hilary</add>, Paulinus Nolanus, Ephrem Syrus <lb xml:id="l14"/>Didymus Alexandrinus, Macarius, Ierom, Ruffin, Cassian &amp; many <lb xml:id="l15"/>others) were monks &amp; many of them (as Basil, Nazianzen <del type="cancelled"><supplied reason="copy" resp="#jy">Eus</supplied><lb xml:id="l16"/>ebius</del> Vercellensis, Ambrose, Martin, D. Augustin, the founders of <lb xml:id="l17"/>monkery in Asia, Thrace, Italy, Lombardy, France, Afr<supplied reason="copy" cert="high" resp="#jy">ica</supplied> <supplied reason="copy" cert="medium" resp="#jy"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></supplied> <lb xml:id="l18"/>monasteries out of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they filled their churches. And this <supplied reason="copy" resp="#jy" cert="high">was</supplied> <lb xml:id="l19"/>the original of the celibacy of the Clergy. For <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Clergy</del> <lb xml:id="l20"/>about this time matrimony began to be prohibited to all the <lb xml:id="l21"/>Clergy. For <hi rend="superscript">a</hi> Epiphanius in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> 374 <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> wrote that <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> <lb xml:id="l22"/>where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ecclesiastical canons were accurately observed those <lb xml:id="l23"/>only who had no wives or absteined from them <gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/> were admitted <lb xml:id="l24"/>into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> orders of Bishops Priests Deacons &amp; Subdeacons: &amp; th<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium" resp="#jy">at</supplied> <lb xml:id="l25"/>where Clergymen did get children it was through licentious<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium" resp="#jy">ness</supplied> <lb xml:id="l26"/>&amp; not by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> authority of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Canon. And in <del type="cancelled">the end of his</del> <lb xml:id="l27"/>another <hi rend="superscript">b</hi><anchor xml:id="n001r-01"/><note target="#n001r-01">b Epiph <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/></note> place that <hi rend="underline"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Priesthood then consisted chiefly of <gap reason="copy" unit="chars" extent="2"/> <lb xml:id="l28"/>order of <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">virgins</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">Bachelors</rdg></app> or if not of <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">virgins</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">Bachelors</rdg></app> certainly of Monks: <gap reason="copy" unit="words" extent="1"/> <lb xml:id="l29"/>if fit persons are not to be found amongst the Monks, then Priests <lb xml:id="l30"/><del type="strikethrough">are created</del> use to be created out of those who abstein from their <lb xml:id="l31"/>wives or after one marriage continue in widdowhood</hi>. Whence <lb xml:id="l32"/>Ierome <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">against Vigilantius</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">said: What shall <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ch</del> in his book against Vigilantius <lb xml:id="l33"/>said <del type="strikethrough">of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches</del> in general: <hi rend="underline">What shall <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches <supplied reason="copy" resp="#jy">of</supplied> <lb xml:id="l34"/>the East do? What those of Egypt &amp; of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apostolic S<supplied reason="copy" resp="#jy">ea</supplied> <lb xml:id="l35"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> either takes Virgins for Clergimen or Monks <gap reason="copy" unit="words" extent="1"/> <lb xml:id="l36"/>those that leave their wives if they have any</hi>. In the life <lb xml:id="l50"/>of Hilarion &amp; <lb xml:id="l51"/>the Preface <lb xml:id="l52"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> life <lb xml:id="l53"/>of Antony</note> Antony planting one body <lb xml:id="l54"/><gap reason="copy" unit="words" extent="1"/> headed by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Partriarch &amp; clergy of <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Diocess of</add> Alexandria <lb xml:id="l55"/><gap reason="copy" unit="words" extent="1"/> planting another in Syria headed by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Patriarch <lb xml:id="l56"/><supplied reason="copy" cert="medium" resp="#jy">&amp; clergy</supplied> of <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the dioces of</add> Antioch.
