For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prophets <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out doubt spake in a dialect then commonly known to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> more understanding sort of men, &amp; many of their types &amp; figures <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are unusuall &amp; difficult to us appear by these records of Achmet to have been very familiar to those Eastern nations; at least among the interpreters. And <del type="cancelled">therefore <gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/> therefore esteeming it pertinent to show <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> consent of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> interpretations <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> doctrin of these interpreters next after their consent <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> scriptures: I proceed.<anchor xml:id="addend001v-01"/> <del type="blockStrikethrough">For it is not to be doubted but that their doctrine anciently descended from men of real skill such as were Balaam, Numb 24: Pharaoh's Magicians &amp; wise men, whose wisdom Moses hath set a value upon by counting it worth his learning Gen 41. Acts 7.22. Nebuchadnezzar's Caldeans &amp; other Interpreter's amongst <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was Daniel who besides his extraordinary gift of Prophesy had also skill in all learning &amp; understanding, in all Visions &amp; Dreams Dan 1.17. And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Magi <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> came from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> East to worship <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Saviour, who seem to be of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same order <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest. And therefore since God gave <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sacred Prophesies to be interpreted by humane skill, we cannot next after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Scriptures have a better guide then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> established doctrine of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ancient Interpreters. I call it established, ffor such <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> exact consent of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> afforesaid three Nations in <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>the</sic><corr>these</corr></choice> records argue it to be, since there uses not to happen any such consent in doctrines <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> severall nations or severall men in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same nation frame according to their privat imaginations. [To <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> consideration <del type="strikethrough">may</del> their consent <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> such interpretations <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>are</sic><corr>as</corr></choice> are to be collected out of scripture may be added as a pledge of</del> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight"><del type="blockStrikethrough">their</del></fw><pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">2</fw> <choice><sic>their <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">certainty</rdg> <rdg place="supralinear">legitimatenes</rdg></app> in the rest. The comparison of a Kingdom <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">or political world</del></add> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">Vnivers</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">World</del> natural world</del></add> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">World</add> may appear out of Isa 51.16 where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">new</add> founding of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>polical</sic><corr>political</corr></choice> world or Kingdom of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews is exprest by planting <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Heavens &amp; laying <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> foundations of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Earth. <hi rend="underline">I have put my words in thy mouth &amp; have covered thee in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> shaddow of mine hand <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> I may plant <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heavens &amp; <del type="cancelled">say unto</del> lay the foundations of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> earth, &amp; say unto Zion, Thou art my people</hi>. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">See the Calde Paraphrast.</add> In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same sence is Heaven &amp; earth to be taken in Isa: 1.2. <del type="cancelled">Deut. <gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/>.</del> Hagg: 2.21. &amp;c</p>
<p xml:id="par3">2. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> <anchor xml:id="n002r-02"/> <note place="marginRight" target="#n002r-02">Dan 8.10</note>] When Ioseph dreamed that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun Moon &amp; eleven Stars should do obesance to him, Iacob interprets it of himself his wife &amp; Sons comparing his Family to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vnivers as if it were a little Kingdom Gen 37. <space dim="horizontal" extent="5" unit="chars"/> The Sun immutably represents <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Moon the next in power to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Planet Venus the Queen, the rest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> greater stars the great men of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdom. Achmet. chap 167. <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Ind. Pers. Eg.</add> Yet Lucifer <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same with Venus does sometimes signify a King as in Isa 14.12, where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King of Babylon is called by this name; suppose in respect of God or <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of God</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Christ</add> the <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> King of <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> Kings.</p>

Thou hast said in thine heart I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my Throne above <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stars of God. I will sit also upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mount of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> congregation in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sides of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> North, I will ascend above <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heights of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> clouds, &amp;c. This is spoken of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King of Babylon exalting himself above all Kings &amp; earthly dominions. Isa 14.13. <space dim="horizontal" extent="3" unit="chars"/> If a King</del> <pb xml:id="p003r" n="3r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">3</fw> <del type="blockStrikethrough">see himself as it were above the <hi rend="underline">heaven</hi> where the stars are, he shall find exaltation &amp; a name above other Kings, Achmet. c. 162. If a King dream that he sits upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">Clouds</hi> carried whither he will he shall rule over his enemies, &amp; obtein victories &amp; unexpected joy. Ach: c. 194.</del></p>

There is nothing more usuall then to put <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Earth for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Nations of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Earth, or for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> common people of any great Kingdom: as in these expressions. Let all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Earth prais <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord. He causeth the Earth &amp; them that dwell therein to worship <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first beast Rev. 13.12. Hear o Heavens &amp; give ear o Earth Isa 1 2. [Sing O Heavens, &amp; be joyfull O Earth &amp; break forth into singing o Mountains: for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord hath comforted his people. Isa 49:13. &amp;c.]</p>
<p xml:id="par6">5. The <hi rend="underline">Waters</hi> where the Whore sitteth are peoples &amp; multitudes &amp; nations &amp; tongues Rev 17.15. I saw a Beast rise up out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">Sea</hi>. i.e. out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> aggregate of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> waters where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Whore sitteth Rev. 13.1. How is Babylon become an astonishment among <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations! the <hi rend="underline">Sea</hi> (i.e. <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdom of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">Persians</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Medes</add>) is come upon Babylon she is covered <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> multitude of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> waves thereof, her cities are a desolation &amp;c Ier 51.42. <choice><sic>I</sic><corr cert="high" type="delText"/></choice> <space dim="horizontal" extent="3" unit="chars"/> If any man dream he is Lord of the <hi rend="underline">Sea</hi> he will be successor in the whole Kingdom. Ach. c. 178. Ind. Pers. So in Dan 9.16. Let thy fury be turned away from thy City Ierusalem thy holy Mountain Dan 9.16. The like in Dan 9.20. Ier 17.3. Isa 27.13, &amp; 66.10 &amp;c.</p>

<p xml:id="par13">Sometimes a mountain is extended to signify <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> whole dition of a city as in Dan 2.35 &amp; Isa 11.9, much after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same manner that a King is sometimes put for his kingdom.</p>

And therefore since these men here spoken unto are Idols &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Rocks their Temples; by men hiding themselves in Rocks must be understood Idols shut up or buried in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ruins of their Temples.</del></p>

And <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same place</add> the Pestilence is represented by ffowls of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heaven to destroy becaus <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> infection of the Pestilence is in the Air &amp; seizes a man from thence.</p>

If he seem to see his own ships burnt it portends ruin to his forces. And if he seem to build a new Navy of many ships, <del type="cancelled">proportio</del> according to their number he shall<del type="cancelled"> again</del> again rais forces more or less powerfull against his enemies. For christ is represented by a Lyon as well as Nebuchadnezzar, &amp; some of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 12 Tribes <pb xml:id="p016r" n="16r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">16</fw> are characterised by Beasts in <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> Iacob's blessing as well as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 4 Monarchies in Daniels visions. And therefore I must rather derive this Type from Armies whereby Kingdoms are usually founded &amp; <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>uppheld</sic><corr>upheld</corr></choice>. For since Armies are <del type="cancelled">repre</del> wild beasts by Def <space dim="horizontal" extent="3" unit="chars"/>, it is thence very naturall to put a Beast for <del type="cancelled">a</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">any</add> Kingdom <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was originated from Armies &amp; frequently imploys <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">them</add> like a <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">ravenous</add> Beast to <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> prey upon its neighbours. And this the propheti<choice><orig>qꝫ</orig><reg>que</reg></choice> doctrin of Iacob may teach us, who called Iudah a Lyon from his getting <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prey &amp; being prince of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Tribes, Issachar an Ass from his being in slavery, Dan a serpent from laying stratagems &amp; Benjamin a wolf from ravening &amp; devouring <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prey. And so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> descriptions of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">4</del> Beasts <del type="cancelled">of</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in</add> Daniel almost wholly respect their pugnaciousnes excepting what is said of the little horn. And in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyps although <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> two-hornd Beast be not represented pugnacious, yet its merchants (chap 18) supply the place of Armies, since they prey upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kings of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> earth by their sophistical merchandise no less then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other by force.</p>
<p xml:id="par57">32. A Dragon signifies <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> person of a <hi rend="underline">hostile</hi> King, &amp; serpents according to their bignes the persons of other greater or lesser enemies Achm: c 283. According to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> doctrin <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyptic Dragon is a very proper emblem as well of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Kingdom <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was so great an enemy to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church, as of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Devil that arch-enemy to mankind. But there seems to be in this emblem a further mystery; namely to insinuate a <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>comparion</sic><corr>comparison</corr></choice> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> oppression of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church under <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Egyptian Bondage, as if that were a type of this. For it is observable that although <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews had many enemies yet none but Pharaoh is represented by a Dragon in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old Prophets. And he is so represented as may be seen in Ezek 29.3. Isa 51.9. Psalm 74 13, &amp; Isa 27.1. In <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> last places Pharaoh in respect of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> overflowing Nilus is also called Leviathan as if he were a water Dragon like <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyps who cast out of his mouth water as a flood. And so in Psalm 74 he is represented <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> many heads like <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same Apocalyptic Dragon. But for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fuller analogy of these two Dragons I must refer you to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> comment <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">on</fw><pb xml:id="p017r" n="17r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">17</fw> on Rev 11.8.</p>
<p xml:id="par58">33 Heads are sometimes collaterall parts of a kingdom, as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> four heads of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Leopard in Dan 7.6. But if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> kingd<choice><orig>ō</orig><reg>om</reg></choice> be divided into both collaterall &amp; successive parts, then may the successive parts be represented by Heads, as in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyptic Beast whose seven heads appear to be successive by the saying that Five are fallen &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other is not yet come Rev 17 10.</p>
<p xml:id="par59">34 Horns if they appear together, denote collaterall parts of a Kingdom or of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> head of it upon <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they grow, as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> four horns of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gote Dan 8.8 &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 10 horns of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Beast Dan 7. Rev 17.12.  <del type="strikethrough">But</del> If <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Horns Heads &amp; <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>body</sic><corr>Body</corr></choice> of a Beast be <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> considered strictly according to their relation one among another, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> horns as being <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most exalted member will chiefly respect Kings or successions of them, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Heads <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Nobles &amp; great men &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Body <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdom. <add place="marginRight" indicator="no">But becaus a King is sometimes put for his Kingdom, thence it is that a horn is also sometimes used in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same signification.</add></p>
<p xml:id="par60">35. Eyes being <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">most pro</del> chief organs by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> a man acquires knowledg, are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most proper emblem thereof. And hence was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">ordin</del> known Hieroglyphic of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ægyptians: A scepter <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> an eye on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> top of it to signify <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> policy &amp; foresight requisite in a King.</p>

Teeth <del type="cancelled">I</del> must signify great men becaus they are in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> head, &amp; those souldiers becaus they are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> chief instruments wherewith a Beast fights. Hence to expres <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fortitude of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fourth Beast, it is described <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> great iron teeth. And so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Locusts Ioel 1.6 &amp; Rev 9.8 are represented <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">gre</del> teeth of Lyons. And probably the Author of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fable of Cadmus had respect to this signification of teeth when he made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Dragons teeth to be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> seed of armed Souldiers.</p>
<p xml:id="par63">38 The feet very fitly represent common souldiers. For as they are the most active members, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lowest <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>par</reg></choice>ts of Beast, &amp; <choice type="oldCorr"><sic><gap reason="illgbl" extent="1" unit="words"/></sic><corr>serve</corr></choice> to support him, &amp; to move upon &amp; <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">to</fw><pb xml:id="p018r" n="18r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">18</fw> to fight with: so Armies are much in motion, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lowest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> support of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> kingdom, &amp; by them Kingdoms are translated to &amp; fro, &amp; they are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> members wherewith Kingdoms fight. This interpretation is also evident by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Visions of Daniel. For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ten horned Beast to signify <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> use &amp; power of his feet in fighting is represented <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> nails of Bras &amp; said to stamp with his feet what he devoured not <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> his teeth: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is as much as to say, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><sic>what what</sic><corr>what</corr></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Commanders left <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> inferior souldiers spoiled. <p xml:id="par64">39 The tayle also, at least where feet are not considered may properly represent Armies, as being the train &amp; hinder end as it were of a kingdom. Achmet <del type="cancelled">c. 152</del> saith: If one dream he rides on Pharas (i.e. a generous steed) having a thick <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">set</add> &amp; long tail, he shall have a train of attendants or followers answerable to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fulnes &amp; length of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> tail, c 152. And Achmet delivers it for the doctrin of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indians Persians &amp; Egyptians, That a generous Steed denotes eminence &amp; dignity, &amp; vulgar horses inferior nobility &amp; glory And if one dream he rides on a nimble &amp; mettlesome hors, he shall acquire amongst <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people fame &amp; great renown, &amp; eminence &amp; honour. – And if he seem to ride armed on a generous steed he shall obtein power &amp; renown according to his armour. chap 233.</p>

<p xml:id="par69">57 Some have supposed that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ballance in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> third Seal might be an emblem of famin, but <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out ground, there being no authority <del type="cancelled">for it</del> either in scripture or other authentic writings that I have met with for such an interpretation. There <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">are</add> other ways of expressing famin; as by the tearing of Doggs Ier 15.3: &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">when</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ballance is <del type="strikethrough">frequently used to express justice</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">mentioned in scripture it is either with respect to Iudgment</add> as in Iob 31.6. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Psal 62.9</add> Dan 5.27. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or to Iustice as in</add> Hosea 12.7. Micah 6.11, Prov 16.11 &amp;c. And <del type="strikethrough">therefore it is more likely that the Ballance should be appropriated to <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">judgment &amp;</add> justice: For <del type="cancelled">further</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">further</add> confirmation of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we may further add <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> doctrin of <del type="cancelled"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indian</del> Interpreters.</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">to the same sense is the Doctrin of Interpreters, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> runs thus.</add> If in a dream one see a Ballance poised in any place let him understand it of a Iudg. Martyrdom is a kind of sacrifice, for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sacrifices under <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Law were but a type of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Saviours death. And hence <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Paul when his martyrdom approached said: I am now ready to be offered (gr: sacrificed) &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time of my departure is at hand. 2 Tim 4.6. Ieremiah also in ch 30.6, 7 interprets this figure plainly. And the reason is plain. ffor as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> they were considered as married to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God, Ier 3.1, 8, 14 Hosea 2.1, 7 &amp;c so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other nations had as it were contracted wedlock <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> fals Gods, insomuch that they are called <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gods of those nations as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> God of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews. <add place="inline" indicator="no">Yet Nineveh is once called a harlot (Nahum 3.4.) but not for Idolatry.</add></p>
<p xml:id="par76">62 That Idolatry is sometimes termed Blasphemy may be seen in these instances. In this your Fathers have <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">blas<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l2"/></fw><pb xml:id="p021r" n="21r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">21</fw><hi rend="underline"> blasphemed</hi> me in that they have committed a <hi rend="underline">trespas</hi> against me. For when I had brought them into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Land – – then they saw every high hill &amp; all the thick trees, &amp; they offered there their <hi rend="underline">sacrifice</hi>. Ezek 20.28. Your ffathers — have burnt incense upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mountains &amp; blasphemed me upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hills. i.e. by invoking other Gods. Isa 65.7 And so in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyps, although Blasphemy need not there be wholly limited to Idolatry, yet <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> names of Blasphemy upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Whore's Beast are well interpreted by Grotius to be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> names of Idol-Gods by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God is blasphemed whilst men attribute that to them <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is due onely to him.</p>

For it is said in ch 18.23 that by her deadly <del type="cancelled">poison</del> Potion (<foreign xml:lang="gre">ἐκ του φαρμακου</foreign>) were all nations deceived. <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>that</sic><corr>That</corr></choice> is by the wine of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> poison of her fornication <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἐκ του ὀίνου του θυμου</foreign>, as it is called in vers 3 &amp; 8. For <foreign xml:lang="gre">θυμὸς</foreign> signifies as well poison as wrath, &amp; her Cup is to be supposed, as it were, a Philtre or love-Potion, such <choice><sic>a</sic><corr>as</corr></choice> Whores were said to administer for inciting love, &amp; for that end to compose it of such poisonous medicaments as might work by stupifying &amp; infatuating those to whome they gave it.</p>
<p xml:id="par79">68 Where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iewish Nation is represented as a Whore her <pb xml:id="p022r" n="22r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">22</fw> threatned distress &amp; desolation is often expressed by making her naked as in Ier 13.22, 26. Ezek 16.37 &amp; 23.26 &amp; Hosea 2.3 &amp; the like of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Virgin daughter of Babylon in Isa 47.3.</p>

<p xml:id="par82">42 And becaus clouds signify multitudes of people by Def 29 therefore ascending in a cloud will signify exaltation in or by a multitude, &amp; riding on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> clouds <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> subduing &amp; reigning over much people. Thus God threatning the overthrow of Pharaoh by Nebuchadnezzar saith: And when I shall put the out – I will cover <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a cloud — &amp; set darknes upon thy Land. <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Chalde Par: renders thus: <del type="cancelled">I will</del> A King <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> his Army shall cover thee as a cloud <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> ascends &amp; covers <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun. The same is to be understood of obscuring a Kingdom by smoke as in Isa <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">14.31</fw><pb xml:id="p023r" n="23r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">23</fw> 14.31. Thou whole Palestina art dissolved for there shall come from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> North a Smoke &amp;c.</p>
<p xml:id="par84">44 I will caus your sun [O Israel] to go down at noon day, &amp; I will darken <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> earth in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> clear day, &amp; I will turn your feasts into mourning Amos 8.9. <space dim="horizontal" extent="4" unit="chars"/> She [Ierusalem] hath given up <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ghost, her Sun is gone down while it was yet day. Yet the celestiall bodies are not to be interpreted so strictly of <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persons of</add> Kings &amp; Princes but that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun &amp; Moon may sometimes be used to signify in generall <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><sic>spendor</sic><corr>splendor</corr></choice> &amp; glory of a kingdom, <del type="strikethrough">for</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in</add> as much as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> glory of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world <choice><sic>by</sic><corr>by day</corr></choice> &amp; the Moon by night. For thus the Chalde Paraphrast interprets them in Ier 15.9, &amp; Isa 60.20. And so where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Woman is said to be clothed <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Moon under her feet Rev 12, the Sun &amp; Moon signify <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> glory of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> righteousnes of Christ wherewith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> church must be clothed, &amp; of her own righteousnes <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">borrows</del> she must put of but yet be supported by it as it borrows splendor from that sun &amp; shines as it were by reflexion. And so where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sun is turned into blacknes &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> moon into blood Ioel 2.31 &amp; Rev 6.12 I had rather understand it in generall of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> splendor of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdom put out &amp; the glory turned into bloodshed, then interpret it onely of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> next in dignity. For the perishing of those two persons infer not <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> overthrow of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdom: whereas in Ioel the turning of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><sic>into</sic><corr>Sun into</corr></choice> darknes &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Moon into blood is made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> description of that universall overthrow of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentile Kingdoms &amp; mighty slaughter of all their Armies <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is to happen at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great day of God almighty, as is at large described in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> next chapter.</p>
<p xml:id="par87">As for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Moons being turned into blood <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> expression seems borrowed from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> dusky reddish colour of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Moon in a partiall Eclips which is here rather alluded unto then the darknes of a totall Eclips, that <del type="strikethrough">by <gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great slaughter of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations may be exprest by calling <del type="cancelled">it</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the colour</add> blood. ffor that this word was intended for an expression of their bloodshed is plain by the precedent sentence. I will shew wonders in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Heavens &amp; in the Earth, <hi rend="underline">blood</hi> &amp; fire &amp; pillars of smoke (i.e. slaughter &amp; war) To <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is subjoyned by way of explication: The sun shall be turned into darknes &amp; the Moon into blood before the great &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> terrible day of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord come.</p>

<p xml:id="par88">65 The falling of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stars &amp; departure of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heavens according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">precedent assigned</del> signification of stars &amp; Heaven</del> precedent interpretation of stars &amp; Heaven will signify the fall of great men &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> departure of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> glory of a Kingdom. And becaus Idols are sometimes considered as men by Def 63 therefore this emblem may be applyed either to a Kingdom of Idols or to a Kingdom of men, as the circumstances shall require. <add place="interlinear marginRight" indicator="no">Thus <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Stephen calls <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Idol of Rempham a Star, saying: Ye <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> took up <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Tabernacle of Moloch &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Star of your God Rempham figures <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> ye made to worship them. Acts 7.43.</add> It is indeed less usuall to represent Idols by the stars but it is more proper, becaus they being the <del type="strikethrough">Idols</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Images</add> of supposed celestial Gods, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">were</add> thence in scripture called Gods &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> host of heaven: &amp; the analogy between <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vnivers &amp; a kingdom will be more perfect when <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>the</sic><corr cert="medium">things</corr></choice> <del type="strikethrough">host of</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> relate to</add> heaven are represented by the heavenly bodies, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">terrestriall</del> parts of a Kingdom <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">which respect the earth</add> by things on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Earth then when they are confounded together: <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Yea this <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> scripture seems to insinuate when it calls Idols as well as stars the host of heaven</add> And therefore we need not doubt to interpret stars of Idols &amp; Heaven of their honour &amp; dignity or rather of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">(high places where they were set up &amp; of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice>)</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">orbicular</add> roofs of their Temples, whenever that interpretation will best agree <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> circumstances. And thus it happens in this definition. For here the allusions to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> falling of Figs from a fig-tree &amp; to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rolling of a scroll together, do by striking <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> imagination <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> an Idea of local motion make it a more lively representation of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ruining of a Kingdom of Idol-Gods then of a Kingdom of men. For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stars falling unto the earth as figs fall from a fig tree do most lively represent falling Idols, &amp; Heaven departing as a Scroll <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">when</fw><pb xml:id="p025r" n="25r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">25</fw> when it is rolled together, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> roof of a Temple gradually taken off, or cleaving asunder at its being thrown down.</p>
<p xml:id="par89">As for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> use of this emblem there are but two places where it occurs, viz: Isa: 34.4 &amp; Rev 6.13, 14: The first of <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>w-sup-ch</sic><corr>these</corr></choice> seems to respect that universall overthrow of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles so often prophesied of in Scripture; at <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> time Idolatry is to be universally &amp; forever demolished, as may <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">hereafter</add> appear by comparing Rev 9.20 &amp; 11.15 with Isa 2.17, 18, 19 &amp; Zech 13.2 &amp;c. And concerning this place it <choice><sic>is may</sic><corr>may</corr></choice> be observed that the stars <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> fall down are not called <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stars but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> host of heaven <space dim="horizontal" extent="7" unit="chars"/> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same name by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Idols are often called <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; therefore it may as well signify Idols as stars</add>. The other place is at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sixt Seale when Idols were to be universally abolished but not for ever: of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> more hereafter.</p>
<p xml:id="par90">64 In Def 10 &amp; 63 we shewed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prophets put men for Idols, &amp; Dens &amp; Rocks of Mountains for their Temples: &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reason of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> thing requires that here they should be thus interpreted. For Rocks &amp; Mountains must here signify buildings becaus of their falling, &amp; Men must signify Idols becaus to hide in Dens <del type="cancelled">&amp; Rocks of Mountains</del> or holes of Rocks or to cover <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> falling <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">mountains</add> that is, to shut up in buildings or bury in the ruins of them is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> proper way of destroying Idols but not a proper way of destroying men. But <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> use of these expressions will best appear out of scripture where they are appropriated to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> demolishing of Idolatry. The high places of Aven the sin of Israel shall be destroyed the Thorn &amp; Thistle shall come upon their <hi rend="underline">Altars</hi>, &amp; they shall say to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">mountains</hi> cover us &amp; to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">hills</hi> fall on us Hosea 10.8. The Lord alone shall be ex<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l3"/><fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">alted</fw><pb xml:id="p026r" n="26r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">26</fw>alted in that day &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Idols shall he utterly *<anchor xml:id="n026r-01"/> <note place="marginRight" target="#n026r-01">* gr. hide or bury them.</note> abolish, &amp; they shall go into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> holes of the <hi rend="underline">Rocks</hi> &amp; into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Caves of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Earth for fear of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord Isa 2.19. Here the Idols <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are to be hid in the rocks are called by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> name of Idols but a little before they were spoken unto as men. Enter into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Rock &amp; hide thee in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> dust vers 10. And therefore since the men here spoken unto are Idols, <del type="cancelled">&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rock</del> by men hiding themselves in rocks must be understood Idols shut up in their temples or buried in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ruins thereof.</p>

To expres <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ruin of old Babylon Ieremiah commanded Serajah saing: When thou hast made an end of reading this book thou shalt bind a stone to it &amp; cast it into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> midst of Euphrates, &amp; thou shalt say; Thus shall Babylon sink, &amp;c Ier 51.63. And so by Analogy <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> falling of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great star upon the rivers Rev 8.10 must signify <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ruin of some great Prince. To <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> purpose <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indian Interpreters teach us: If one dream he sees <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stars fall into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sea, let him understand thereby a slaughter of men to be caused by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King, &amp; if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King have this dream he shall see a very great slaughter or mortality of his people. <p xml:id="par92">46. Since waters signify people, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> turning of them to blood must signify slaughter of the people. Thus <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> desolation of Moab <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">is</fw><pb xml:id="p027r" n="27r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">27</fw> is exprest by saying: The waters of Dimon shall be ful of blood. <p xml:id="par95">48 Fire is put to signify war becaus men are represented by things combustible as Trees, Ships, Beasts &amp;c; And as these things wast in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fire so men are destroyed in war. And then this figure there is scarce any more frequently used in Scripture. Say to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Forrest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> South, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> – Behold I will kindle a fire in thee &amp; it shall devour every green tree in thee &amp; every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, &amp; all faces from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> South to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> North shall be burnt therein Ezek 20.47. <p xml:id="par98">Sometimes fire signifies triall &amp; purgation by consuming what is evil, as in Mal 3.2.</p>
<p xml:id="par99">49 If one dream <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun hath scorched him much he will be punished by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> king proportionally to that scorching. Achm. c 167. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Ind. Pers. Eg.</add> This respects a single person, &amp; hence it is easy to collect <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> if a nation be <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">much</add> scorched by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> affliction <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> it portends must be through wars raised by the king; as well becaus burning or scorching denotes war by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> precedent Definition, as becaus there is no means whereby a king may afflict a whole nation so <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">easily &amp; so</add> much as by war.</p>

<p xml:id="par102">If a king see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sea much troubled by wind from a known quarter he will be molested <del type="strikethrough">from</del> by some nation from that quarter, but if he see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sea calm he will peaceably injoy his kingdom. Achm: c <space dim="horizontal" extent="6" unit="chars"/>. If he seem to be taken up &amp; carried <del type="cancelled">to &amp; fro by a wind</del> from place to place by a wind, he shall undertake a long expedition <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> success proportionall to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> strength &amp; quickness of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wind. c 165 Ind. <p xml:id="par104">If one dream that hail falls on a place, he may expect a violent incursion of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> enemy; <choice type="oldCorr"><sic><gap reason="illgbl" extent="1" unit="words"/></sic><corr>and</corr></choice> if he dream <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hail <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>hurts</sic><corr>hurt</corr></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stalks of corn there shall be slaughter of men in that place proportionall to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> breaking of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stalks. Ach c 191 Ind. Pers. Eg. If one dream he sees a Dragon struck with lightning, it portends war &amp; ruin to some other King <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is an enemy to that country c 283 <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">ex Ind. Pers &amp; Æg.</add></p>
<p xml:id="par105">As for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mixing of fire with Hail, that figure may seem borrowed from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Egyptian plague of thunder &amp; Hail <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> fire mingled. Exod 9.23. But I <del type="strikethrough">had rather</del> suppose <del type="strikethrough">that</del> it alludes also to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> frequent mixture of Hail <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> lightning <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> happens in hot countries although in <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Northern regions it is unusuall.</p>
<p xml:id="par106">54 My doctrin shall drop as the <hi rend="underline">rain</hi> my speech shall distill as the dew, as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> small rain upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> tender Herb &amp; as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> showers upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> grass Deutr. 32.2. He shall come down like rain upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">mown</del> mown grass, as showers water <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> earth.
