<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1">Since <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">one of</add> the most celebrated <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>Historian</sic><corr>Historians</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l1"/> <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">that</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">who</rdg></app> has yet appeared, <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">doubted</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">made it a doubt</rdg></app> <lb xml:id="l2"/><choice type="oldCorr"><sic>wether</sic><corr>whether</corr></choice> it was worth while to <lb xml:id="l3"/>write an account of the Roman <lb xml:id="l4"/>Empire even when <hi rend="underline">it was</hi> at <lb xml:id="l5"/>the highest pitch of it's <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">greatness</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">glory</rdg></app>, <lb xml:id="l6"/>it may perhaps be thought a <lb xml:id="l7"/> <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">vain &amp; trifling attempt</rdg><rdg place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">trifling &amp; insipid task</del></rdg><rdg place="infralinear"><del type="strikethrough">low &amp; unaffecting employment</del></rdg></app>  to compile <lb xml:id="l8"/>the life of a private man, spent <lb xml:id="l9"/>in speculation, &amp; in the exercise <lb xml:id="l10"/>of those silent virtues which, <lb xml:id="l11"/>however delightfull to the possessor, <lb xml:id="l12"/>afford but little entertainment in <lb xml:id="l13"/>the description, &amp; are not so apt <lb xml:id="l14"/>to strike a vulgar reader as the <lb xml:id="l15"/>tumultuary scenes of pomp &amp; <lb xml:id="l16"/>action. But <add place="interlinear" indicator="yes">But I beleive I may safely affirm that if he who <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> is the subject of this present discourse had flourished in the times <gap reason="faded" extent="unclear"/> even by the difficulty discouraged of finding a parallel &amp; why should not the mind of man be as well pleased</add> why should not <hi rend="underline">the <lb xml:id="l17"/>mind of man</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">wee</add> be as well pleased <pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/> in tracing the progress of Reason <lb xml:id="l18"/>in one of our own species &amp; <lb xml:id="l19"/>in contemplating the heigth of <lb xml:id="l20"/>knowledge <hi rend="underline"> <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">it</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">that particle of Divinity</rdg></app></hi> <lb xml:id="l21"/>is capable of attaining as in <lb xml:id="l22"/>following a <del type="cancelled">Conqueror</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Hero</add> <choice><abbr>thro<hi rend="superscript">u</hi></abbr><expan>through</expan></choice> a <lb xml:id="l23"/>field of blood &amp; confusion; <del type="cancelled">And</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Alexander himself who for so many ages has been in possession of the first place amongst them <del type="strikethrough">is</del> valued himself more for the little knowledge he had learned from Aristotle than for all his extensive <del type="strikethrough">victories</del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">conquests</add>; And it must be owned that</add> <lb xml:id="l24"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><sic>and</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> a life <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was one continued <lb xml:id="l25"/>series of labour, patience, <lb xml:id="l26"/>humility, temperance, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">meekness</add> humanity <lb xml:id="l27"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">meekness</del></add> bene<hi rend="underline">volence</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">ficence</add> &amp; piety without <lb xml:id="l28"/>any tincture of vice, exhibits an example <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">which is</add> more universally <lb xml:id="l29"/>beneficial, &amp; <del type="cancelled"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is</del> nearer the <lb xml:id="l30"/>reach of the <hi rend="underline">greatest part</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">bulk</add> of <lb xml:id="l31"/>mankind than the glory of <lb xml:id="l32"/><del type="cancelled">Heroes</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Conquerors</add>. <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">&amp; imitable than the <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> atchievements of the warriour or the triumph the victorious triumphs of Hercules</add> Nor can it be thought <lb xml:id="l33"/><del type="strikethrough">un</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">less</del></add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">un</add>becoming a <del type="strikethrough">rational</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">an intelligent</add> being <pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/> <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">to consider the various revolutions</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">to inquire into the increase of Natural discoveries</rdg></app> <lb xml:id="l34"/>in the Co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>onwealth of Knowledge, <lb xml:id="l35"/>to <hi rend="underline">observe</hi> the period of one <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">Hypothesis</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">System</rdg></app> <lb xml:id="l36"/> &amp; the rise of another <lb xml:id="l37"/>&amp; to pay a due homage &amp; reve<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l38"/>rence to those Great <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">immortal</add> Deliverers <lb xml:id="l39"/>who freed mankind from the <lb xml:id="l40"/>bondage of Error &amp; Ignorance.</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><choice><abbr>Tho<hi rend="superscript">u</hi></abbr><expan>Though</expan></choice> wee should <del type="strikethrough">go far back into <lb xml:id="l41"/>past ages &amp;</del> look around the <lb xml:id="l42"/>present <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">ages and even go far back into the past</add>, difficult would it be <lb xml:id="l43"/>to find an instance of a more <lb xml:id="l44"/>exalted Genius &amp; Virtue, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of</add> one <lb xml:id="l45"/>who penetrated farther into the <lb xml:id="l46"/>works of the divine Author <lb xml:id="l47"/>of Nature or laid a more solid <lb xml:id="l48"/>foundation for a lasting &amp; <lb xml:id="l49"/>Universal Empire in Philosophy <lb xml:id="l50"/>than <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">did the great</del></add> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac <hi rend="underline">Newton</hi>.</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3"><handShift new="#cc" scribe="Catherine_Conduitt"/>This <hi rend="underline">Philosopher</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/> extraordinary person</del></add> who was to <lb xml:id="l51"/>introduce a freedom of thinking <lb xml:id="l52"/>&amp; to teach men not to give up <lb xml:id="l53"/>their reason implicitely to any <hi rend="underline"><del type="strikethrough">Hypothesis</del></hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">System</add> howsoever dignified <lb xml:id="l54"/>or established, came into the <lb xml:id="l55"/>world in 1642 when <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">a general</rdg><rdg place="supralinear">an uncommon</rdg></app> <lb xml:id="l56"/>spirit of Liberty <hi rend="underline"><del type="strikethrough">was spread over</del></hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">was gone forth in</del></add> <lb xml:id="l57"/>had taken possession of <gap reason="faded" extent="unclear"/> <del type="strikethrough">the greatest part of this nation</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">our forefathers</add> <lb xml:id="l58"/>&amp; upon that day of the year <lb xml:id="l59"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">brought the greatest of <unclear reason="faded" cert="medium">blessings</unclear> <lb xml:id="l60"/>upon mankind &amp;</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">without any publick institution on his account</del></add> will always <lb xml:id="l61"/>be celebrated with the highest <lb xml:id="l62"/>devotion by the Christian <lb xml:id="l63"/>world <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">for having brought a Saviour to mankind</add>. <add place="interlinear" indicator="no" hand="#jc"><del type="strikethrough">He was baptized in Costerworth church the <choice><sic>1<hi rend="superscript">s</hi></sic><corr>1st</corr></choice> <choice><abbr>Ian<hi rend="superscript">ry</hi></abbr><expan>Ianuary</expan></choice> 1642 as appears by the Register of that church</del></add> His father died near three months before</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5"><hi rend="underline">He was born upon Christmas day</hi> <lb xml:id="l64"/>in the year 1642 near 3 months <lb xml:id="l65"/><hi rend="underline">after the death of his father</hi>, <lb xml:id="l66"/>so that he is another instance of <lb xml:id="l67"/><choice type="oldCorr"><sic>a</sic><corr>an</corr></choice> <hi rend="underline">remark</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><sic>the</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> observation</add> <del type="strikethrough"><hi rend="underline"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> has been</hi></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> has been</add> often <lb xml:id="l68"/>made; that posthumous children <lb xml:id="l69"/>frequently prove <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">most</add> extraordinary <lb xml:id="l70"/>persons, &amp; does not add less <lb xml:id="l71"/>weight to the observation than <lb xml:id="l72"/>Cæsar or Nassau <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">nor will the remark be of less weight if with the names of Cear &amp; Nassau that of Newton be hereafter cited upon this occasion</add>. <lb xml:id="l73"/><handShift new="#cc" scribe="Catherine_Conduitt"/><hi rend="underline">That there may be no <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">room for</add> contention <lb xml:id="l74"/>hereafter about the place of <lb xml:id="l75"/>the birth of this Homer of <lb xml:id="l76"/>Philosophy let me take note <lb xml:id="l77"/>that</hi> <handShift new="#jc" scribe="John_Conduitt"/>He was born at the <lb xml:id="l78"/>Mannor house of his family <lb xml:id="l79"/>at Wolstrope in the parish of <lb xml:id="l80"/>Costerworth in the County of <choice><sic>Linoln</sic><corr>Lincoln</corr></choice> <pb xml:id="p003v" n="3v"/> six miles South of Grantham in <lb xml:id="l81"/>the great road from London to the <lb xml:id="l82"/>North, it lies on the West side <lb xml:id="l83"/>of the valley of the River Witham <lb xml:id="l84"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline"><del type="cancelled">takes it's source</del></hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><hi rend="underline">rises</hi></add> near it, it <lb xml:id="l85"/>has a fine prospect Eastward, the <lb xml:id="l86"/>air is very wholesome &amp; the <lb xml:id="l87"/>country about it beautifull. <del type="cancelled">It</del></add> holds court <lb xml:id="l91"/>leet &amp; Court Baron, &amp; by the copies of the Rolls appears to <lb xml:id="l92"/>have been for many generations <lb xml:id="l93"/>in the family of the Newtons <lb xml:id="l94"/>who stile themselves <del type="strikethrough">in these rolls</del> <lb xml:id="l95"/>Lords of the Mannour of Mortimer <lb xml:id="l96"/>in the parishes or precincts of <lb xml:id="l97"/>Wolstrope &amp; Costerworth in the <lb xml:id="l98"/>soak of Grantham in the County of Lincoln. <pb xml:id="p004r" n="4r"/> <del type="strikethrough">They came originally form Lancashire.</del> <lb xml:id="l99"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac was descended from the elder <lb xml:id="l100"/>branch of the family of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Iohn <lb xml:id="l101"/>Newton <choice><abbr>Bar<hi rend="superscript">tt</hi></abbr><expan>Baronet</expan></choice> The co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>on Ancestor <lb xml:id="l102"/>to them both was Iohn Newton <lb xml:id="l103"/>of Westby in the parish of <lb xml:id="l104"/>Basingthorp in the County of <lb xml:id="l105"/>Lincoln who<add place="inline" indicator="no">se</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><add place="inline" indicator="no">forefathers</add> <del type="strikethrough">ancestors</del> came thither from Lancashire – he</add> had four sons, Iohn <lb xml:id="l106"/>Thomas Richard &amp; William; Iohn <lb xml:id="l107"/>the eldest who died in 1563 was <lb xml:id="l108"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac's Great Grandfather's Father, <lb xml:id="l109"/>he bought <del type="cancelled">the</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">an</add> estate of Wolstrope <lb xml:id="l110"/>of Michael Newton of Kirk stoke <lb xml:id="l111"/>in the same County, &amp; removed his <lb xml:id="l112"/>children from Westby thither where <lb xml:id="l113"/><del type="strikethrough">they have</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">his posterity have</add> continued ever since. <lb xml:id="l114"/>William the youngest was <del type="strikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">of</add> the</del> <lb xml:id="l115"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Iohn Newton's Great grandfather <lb xml:id="l116"/>&amp; went from Westby to Gunnerby <lb xml:id="l117"/>in the same County, where he <lb xml:id="l118"/>married the widow of Richard <pb xml:id="p004v" n="4v"/> Hicson of that place. whose son by <lb xml:id="l119"/>her first husband left his half <lb xml:id="l120"/>brother <choice><abbr>Tho.</abbr><expan>Thomas</expan></choice> Newton <del type="cancelled">the son of <lb xml:id="l121"/>William</del> a very considerable estate <lb xml:id="l122"/>in land, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> laid the foundation <lb xml:id="l123"/>of those great possessions that are <lb xml:id="l124"/>now so worthily enjoyed by <lb xml:id="l125"/>that family, &amp; <lb xml:id="l365"/>Emulation that inward spring <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l366"/><hi rend="underline">pushes boys forward</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">operates</add> with so <lb xml:id="l367"/>much more violence than the <lb xml:id="l368"/>faint impulse of tame instruction <lb xml:id="l369"/>not only urged <hi rend="underline">this young Athlete</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the School boy</add> <lb xml:id="l370"/><hi rend="underline">to give an early omen of his <lb xml:id="l371"/>future triumphs by</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">to gain</add> a compleat <lb xml:id="l372"/>victory in this humble scene <lb xml:id="l373"/>but was the first occasion of <lb xml:id="l374"/>his exerting &amp; ships well designed <lb xml:id="l390"/>&amp; several persons still remember <pb xml:id="p013r" n="13r"/> many of his drawings some from <lb xml:id="l391"/><del type="strikethrough">copies</del> pictures &amp; some from the life <lb xml:id="l392"/>particularly the heads of King <lb xml:id="l393"/>Charles the 1<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Donne &amp; his <lb xml:id="l394"/>worthy schoolmaster M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Stokes. <lb xml:id="l395"/>His natural curiosity &amp; inquisitive <lb xml:id="l396"/>temper put him upon observing <lb xml:id="l397"/>the composition of the medicines <lb xml:id="l398"/>&amp; the whole business of the shop <lb xml:id="l399"/>where he liued <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> gave his <lb xml:id="l400"/>mind the first turn to Chymistry <lb xml:id="l401"/>&amp; an early inclination to that <lb xml:id="l402"/>mistress <hi rend="underline"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he courted afterwards <lb xml:id="l403"/>with so much success</hi> &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> jilts so many but</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">which</add> proued <lb xml:id="l404"/>so convenient handmaid to him <lb xml:id="l405"/>in his other great designs –</p>

I find by a letter <lb xml:id="l449"/>of Abbé Conti as well as by <lb xml:id="l450"/>the Eloge of Leibnitz that he <lb xml:id="l451"/>in his latter days spent a great <lb xml:id="l452"/>deal of his time in contriving <lb xml:id="l453"/>such machines without bringing <lb xml:id="l454"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">any of</add> them to perfection</p>

<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="indent0" xml:id="par21"><tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><tei:seg rend="ns" rendition="ns">☉</tei:seg></tei:add> When <tei:choice><tei:abbr>S<tei:hi rend="superscript">r</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>Sir</tei:expan></tei:choice> Isaac had been about <tei:lb xml:id="l574"/>4 years at Grantham school <tei:lb xml:id="l575"/>his mother took him home <tei:pb xml:id="p018v" n="18v"/> to try if he would follow country <tei:lb xml:id="l576"/>affairs &amp; the management of <tei:lb xml:id="l577"/>his own estate, &amp; put him <tei:lb xml:id="l578"/>under the care &amp; instruction <tei:lb xml:id="l579"/>of a trusty old servant. <tei:del type="strikethrough">but <tei:del type="cancelled">he</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><tei:choice><tei:abbr>S<tei:hi rend="superscript">r</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>Sir</tei:expan></tei:choice> Isaac</tei:add> <tei:lb xml:id="l580"/>had tasted too deep of more <tei:lb xml:id="l581"/>engaging studies to relish or give any attention to</tei:del> <tei:add place="interlinear" indicator="yes">It has often been observed that there is a bent in Nature <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> determines great minds to follow that course <tei:hi rend="underline">in <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> they are most capable of excelling</tei:hi>, &amp; it is no wonder one so vigorous <tei:add place="infralinear" indicator="no">active</tei:add> &amp; aspiring as <tei:choice><tei:abbr>S<tei:hi rend="superscript">r</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>Sir</tei:expan></tei:choice> Isaac's was not to be <tei:app type="authorial"><tei:rdg place="inline"><tei:hi rend="underline">stopt</tei:hi></tei:rdg><tei:rdg place="infralinear"><tei:hi rend="underline">kept under</tei:hi></tei:rdg></tei:app> or diverted from its <tei:app type="authorial"><tei:rdg place="inline">proper object</tei:rdg><tei:rdg place="infralinear">higher nobler pursuits</tei:rdg></tei:app></tei:add> <tei:add place="inline" indicator="no">by</tei:add> so low <tei:lb xml:id="l582"/>an employment – When any business <tei:lb xml:id="l583"/>called him to Grantham he would <tei:lb xml:id="l584"/>leave the servant to manage <tei:lb xml:id="l585"/>what was to be done &amp; slip <tei:lb xml:id="l586"/>away to his old lodging, &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l587"/>entertain himself there with <tei:lb xml:id="l588"/>a book till it was time to <tei:lb xml:id="l589"/>return home &amp; instead of <tei:lb xml:id="l590"/>overlooking the corn or cattle <tei:pb xml:id="p021r" n="21r"/><tei:fw type="pag" place="topCenter">10</tei:fw> or any work that was going <tei:lb xml:id="l591"/>forward in the farm he would <tei:lb xml:id="l592"/>sit under a tree with a book <tei:lb xml:id="l593"/>or go to a running stream <tei:lb xml:id="l594"/>&amp; make wheels in imitation of <tei:lb xml:id="l595"/>over &amp; undershot mills, &amp; dams <tei:lb xml:id="l596"/>&amp; sluices &amp; many other Hydro<tei:lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l597"/>statick experiments <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> he <tei:lb xml:id="l598"/>would often be so intent upon <tei:lb xml:id="l599"/>as to forget his dinner. His <tei:lb xml:id="l600"/>Governour soon gave up all hopes <tei:lb xml:id="l601"/>of one who was so extravagantly <tei:lb xml:id="l602"/>idle as to neglect his meals &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l603"/>made frequent complaints of his <tei:lb xml:id="l604"/>pupil, but his old Master <tei:pb xml:id="p021v" n="21v"/> M<tei:hi rend="superscript">r</tei:hi> Stokes who knew his talents <tei:lb xml:id="l605"/>pressed his mother not to bury <tei:lb xml:id="l606"/><tei:del type="strikethrough">so promis</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">such</tei:add> hopeful <tei:del type="strikethrough">a genius</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">talents</tei:add> <tei:lb xml:id="l607"/>but to fit him for the university <tei:lb xml:id="l608"/><tei:del type="strikethrough">&amp; upon hi</tei:del> M<tei:hi rend="superscript">r</tei:hi> Aiscough joined in <tei:lb xml:id="l609"/>the same <tei:app type="authorial"><tei:rdg place="inline">request</tei:rdg><tei:rdg place="supralinear">advice</tei:rdg></tei:app> &amp; upon their <tei:lb xml:id="l610"/>instances <tei:choice><tei:abbr>S<tei:hi rend="superscript">r</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>Sir</tei:expan></tei:choice> Isaac was again <tei:lb xml:id="l611"/>sent to Grantham school for <tei:lb xml:id="l612"/>3 quarters of a year —</tei:p>
