<p rend="indent5" xml:id="par1">Had this great &amp; good man lived in <lb xml:id="l1"/>an age when <del type="strikethrough">inven</del> those superiour <lb xml:id="l2"/>Genij inventors were Deified or in <lb xml:id="l3"/>a country where mortals are <lb xml:id="l4"/>canonized he would have had a <lb xml:id="l5"/>better claim to those honours <lb xml:id="l6"/>than those they have hitherto been <lb xml:id="l7"/>ascribed to, his virtues proved <lb xml:id="l8"/>him a Saint &amp; his discoveries <lb xml:id="l9"/>might well pass for miracles —</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">1 When wee consider his talents his virtues <lb xml:id="l10"/>Even wee that knew him can hardly think <lb xml:id="l11"/>of him without a sort of superstition <lb xml:id="l12"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">even</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">demands <unclear reason="hand" cert="high">all</unclear></add> our reason to check – nor forbear <lb xml:id="l13"/>saying with the Marquis de l'Hospital was <lb xml:id="l14"/>Newton a man? Thus far surely wee may <lb xml:id="l15"/>say that had he lived in an age &amp;c —</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">It is a policy in the Roman <lb xml:id="l16"/>Church to canonize none till <lb xml:id="l17"/>they have been dead 100 years <lb xml:id="l18"/>that there may be no living <lb xml:id="l19"/>witnesses of their imperfections – <lb xml:id="l20"/>it is a happy circumstance <lb xml:id="l21"/>that whilst I am writing <lb xml:id="l22"/>this many are alive who <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">knew him</add> <lb xml:id="l23"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">&amp;</add> can bear witness <del type="strikethrough">of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac's <lb xml:id="l24"/>extraordinary virtues –</del> <lb xml:id="l25"/><del type="blockStrikethrough">Burnett said he had the <lb xml:id="l26"/><hi rend="underline">whitest <choice><sic>soal</sic><corr>soul</corr></choice></hi> he ever knew</del> <lb xml:id="l27"/>for posterity will hardly believe so <lb xml:id="l28"/>many virtues &amp; no vices could <lb xml:id="l29"/>exist in any man — mortal</p>
