<p xml:id="par4">Moses commanded the people of Israel that they should make Iudges <lb xml:id="l16"/>&amp; Officers in all their Gates (that is, in the Gates of all their cities) to judge <lb xml:id="l17"/>the people with just judgment Deut. 16.18. These judges sat in the Gates of <lb xml:id="l18"/>the City &amp; were called the Elders of the city, &amp; judged of capital causes <lb xml:id="l19"/>&amp; much more of smaller matters <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/> according to</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">for putting</add> the law <lb xml:id="l20"/>of Moses in execution Deut 21.19, 20, 21: &amp; 22.15, 16, 17, 18, 21 &amp; 25.7, 8. &amp; <lb xml:id="l21"/>Ruth 4.1, 2, 9, 11 &amp; Amos 5.14. And this sort of government by Elders <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">elected by the peo<add place="supralinear" indicator="no">ple</add></add> for putting <lb xml:id="l22"/>the laws of God in execution continued in Israel till the Captivity &amp; then <lb xml:id="l23"/>was abolished by the Chaldeans (Lament 5.14) &amp; at length restored by the <lb xml:id="l24"/>Commission of Artaxerxes given to Ezra (Ezra 7.25, 26 &amp; 10.14.) And in <lb xml:id="l25"/>the Gate of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> city there was also a place of worship set apart for the <lb xml:id="l26"/>Elders &amp; their Officers &amp; such of the people as came together.  There publick prayers <lb xml:id="l27"/>were put up &amp; Moses was read &amp; expounded.  <del type="over">&amp;</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nd if the Elders sacrificed <lb xml:id="l28"/>they did it on the next hill, erecting there an Altar &amp; a place for eating <lb xml:id="l29"/>the sacrifices, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they called the High Place. 1 Sam. 9.19, 25. 1 King. 7.11 &amp; 13.3 <lb xml:id="l30"/>2 King. 17.29, 32.  But <del type="strikethrough">these High places were not according</del> by the Law of Moses <lb xml:id="l31"/>All Israel was to sacrifice in the Tabernacle &amp; Temple.  And as this was the <lb xml:id="l32"/>place of worship for all Israel so a court of seventy Elders sitting in the <lb xml:id="l33"/>eastern Gate of the Temple was over all Israel.  <del type="cancelled">And</del> In the reign of the <lb xml:id="l34"/>Greeks this Court was called the Sanhedrim, &amp; the lesser Courts <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> their places <lb xml:id="l35"/>of worship in every city were called Synagogues &amp; the Elders <del type="strikethrough">were by the Greeks <lb xml:id="l36"/>called</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or Iudges were called the</add> Presbyter<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add> <del type="strikethrough">And sometimes Synagogues</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">1 Tim. 4.14. And the Elders &amp; people together</add> were called Churches Matt. 18.17.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">The Iews also who were dispersed among the Gentiles erected Syna<lb xml:id="l37"/>gogues in every city where they were sufficiently numerous to incorporate <lb xml:id="l38"/>themselves into a religious body for worshipping God &amp; putting his <lb xml:id="l39"/>laws in execution amongst themselves.  And the Christians of the circum<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l40"/>cision did the like both in Iudea &amp; in other places.  ffor</p>

Winithar made some resistance but the Hunns being assisted by an army of Ostrogoths commanded by Sigismund the son of Hunnimund routed <del type="strikethrough">the western</del> his army  &amp; slew him in battel &amp; gave his kingdom to Hunnimund.  Yet a great part of his people fled to the Danube under the conduct of Alatheus &amp; Saphrax the Guardians of Videric the young son of Winithar.  And so did Fridigern with his people.  And Athanaric being pursued by the Huns, a great part of his people deserted him &amp; under the conduct of Ahaverus fled also to the Danube</add></p>
<p xml:id="par83">The head of th<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>s Embassy was Vlphilas <del type="cancelled">B</del> the Bishop or <lb xml:id="l204"/>Patriarch of the Goths.  He <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">was</add> Bishop of all the Goths both Ostrogoths <lb xml:id="l205"/>&amp; Visigoths <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shews that they had hitherto been but one nation  <lb xml:id="l206"/>He was at the Council of <del type="cancelled">Nic</del> Constantinople A.C. 360 &amp; his predecessor <lb xml:id="l207"/>Theophilus was at the Council of Nice A.C. 3<del type="over">6</del><add place="over" indicator="no">2</add>5.  And this <del type="strikethrough">communion</del> <lb xml:id="l208"/>shews that the communion between <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Goths &amp; Romans <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> in ma</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l209"/>began in matters of religion while Dacia was a Province of the Roman <lb xml:id="l210"/>Empire, was not interrupted by the revolt of the heathen Goths from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l211"/>Roman Empire but continued still entire, the <del type="cancelled">G</del> Romans &amp; Goths <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="words"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">being</del></add> <lb xml:id="l212"/>being <del type="cancelled">still</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">still</add> united in religion &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">still</del></add> looking upon one another as members of <lb xml:id="l213"/>one &amp; the same Church catholick of Christ <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as if they had <del type="strikethrough">been</del> still been but one Empire</add>.  And this made Vlphilas a <lb xml:id="l214"/>very proper person to be sent upon this Embassy.  He had invented the <lb xml:id="l215"/>Gothic letters &amp; translated the scriptures into the language of the <del type="strikethrough">scripture</del> <lb xml:id="l216"/>Goths &amp; <del type="cancelled">very</del> promoted the Christian religion much among the Goths of both <lb xml:id="l217"/>nations so that Fridigern <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">was</unclear> the</del> king of the Visigoths was become a <lb xml:id="l218"/>Christian. <del type="strikethrough">&amp; Athanaric</del> And this was another argument to incline the <lb xml:id="l219"/>Emperor in favour of the Goths.  They had therefore seats granted to <lb xml:id="l220"/>them in Thrace.  But upon their coming thither <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">they</add> wanted food &amp; the <lb xml:id="l221"/>Roman commander Lupicinus exacting upon them &amp; deceitfully inviting <lb xml:id="l222"/>Fritigern their king to a feast with a designe to assassinate him &amp; his <lb xml:id="l223"/>retinue &amp; killing some of them: Fritigern took up arms against the Romans <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">beat</fw></p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par85">Ostrogotha conquered the Gepides, Geberic the Vandals &amp; Hermaneric the Heruli Veneti, <lb xml:id="l224"/>Antes, Sclavi &amp; many other warlike nations of Scythia &amp; Germany as Iornandes <lb xml:id="l225"/>informs us &amp; particularly the nations <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Iornandes calls the Thuidi, Vasinambrocæ, Mœ<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l226"/>rens, Mordensinni, Cari, Rocæ, Tadzans, Athual, Navigo, Bubegentæ &amp; <lb xml:id="l227"/>Coldæ, &amp; the Æstri or Estij seated upon a long tract of the German or <lb xml:id="l228"/>Baltick Sea in Livonia.  So that the kingdom <choice><sic>sems</sic><corr>seems</corr></choice> at <del type="cancelled">this</del> this time to have <lb xml:id="l229"/>comprehended <del type="cancelled">the</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Volinia, red Russia, <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Lithuani &amp; other</add> Scythian</add> nations between the Vistula &amp; the Niper <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or Boristhenes</add> as far northwards <lb xml:id="l230"/>as Revet &amp; Narva <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">besides some nations of Germany</add>. Winithar was warlike, conquered the Antes &amp; slew their <lb xml:id="l247"/>king Box, &amp; <del type="strikethrough">resisted resisted Huns</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Theudicar resisted the Huns &amp;</add> beat <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">Huns</del> in one or two battles but was slain <lb xml:id="l248"/>by them in the third battel <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">A.C. 376</add> &amp; his kingdom given to Hunnimund.  ffor Sigismund <lb xml:id="l249"/>the son of Hunnimund had assisted the Hunns in this war with an army of Ostrogoths.  <lb xml:id="l250"/>Then the Hunns purused Athanaric &amp; the greatest part of his people <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> some other <lb xml:id="l251"/><add indicator="no" place="lineBeginning">scattered</add> Goths under the conduct of Alavivus fled to the side of the Danube &amp; so did <lb xml:id="l252"/>Fridigern with his people the Visigoths: &amp; these nations <del type="strikethrough">sent</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by sending Vlfilas &amp; others in</add> an Embassy <del type="cancelled">sent</del> <lb xml:id="l253"/>to the Emperor Valens obteined leave to pass the Danube &amp; seat them <lb xml:id="l254"/>selves in Mœsia <del type="strikethrough">in the northern</del> &amp; Thrace.  <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Their Patriarch Vlphilas was at the head of this Embassy.</add> Also <choice><sic>also</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> a great part of the <lb xml:id="l255"/>Gruthingi under the conduct of Alatheus &amp; Saphrax the guardians of Videric the <lb xml:id="l256"/>young son of Winithar (now their king,) fled <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><sic>fled</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> from the Huns &amp; Ostrogoths</add> to the side of the Danube &amp; made the <lb xml:id="l257"/>same petition but were rejected, &amp; not long after passed the Danube without <lb xml:id="l258"/>leave while the Roman army was detained in Rhætia in a war against the <lb xml:id="l259"/>Alemans &amp; Sweves. All this rout was in the year 376.</p>
<p xml:id="par87">The Goths were no sooner seated in the Empire but being prest with famin <lb xml:id="l260"/>&amp; grosly abused by the Roman governours they took up arms invaded Thrace, called <lb xml:id="l261"/>to their assistance Athanaric with his forces &amp; some Huns &amp; Alans from beyond <lb xml:id="l262"/>the Danube routed the Roman army slew the Emperor Valens &amp; spread them <lb xml:id="l263"/>selves into Greece &amp; Pannonia as far as the Alps, Alatheus &amp; Saphrax going <lb xml:id="l264"/>westward. And that in the reign of Arcadius &amp; Honorius they passed <lb xml:id="l280"/>the Danube &amp; were seated in the <del type="strikethrough">Roman</del> territory of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans. <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par106">At the opening of the seventh seale the separation becomes more perfect <lb xml:id="l405"/>The woman <choice><sic>bc<del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>me<add indicator="no" place="inline">s</add></sic><corr>becomes</corr></choice> divided from the remnant of her seed, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> the ten <lb xml:id="l406"/>horned beast r<del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>se<add indicator="no" place="inline">s</add> out of the Sea to succeed the Dragon <del type="over">&amp;</del><add place="over" indicator="no">in</add> the west <lb xml:id="l407"/>&amp; the two horned Beast r<del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>se<add indicator="no" place="inline">s</add> out of the earth to succeed the <lb xml:id="l408"/>Woman in the <del type="strikethrough">earth</del> east.  <del type="cancelled">And</del> The Dragon makes war with the <lb xml:id="l409"/>remnant of the Womans <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">seed</add> in the <del type="cancelled">court</del> outward Court of the first <lb xml:id="l410"/>Temple <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; dissolves their churches</add> &amp; causes them to be initiated in the religion of the <lb xml:id="l411"/>Beast &amp; receive his mark except 144000 <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> receive the nam<supplied reason="damage">e</supplied> <lb xml:id="l412"/>of God in their foreheads &amp; retiring into the inner Court stand <lb xml:id="l413"/>on the sea of glass on mount Sion with the Lamb. But <del type="cancelled">the s</del> after the division, &amp; the building <lb xml:id="l448"/>of a second Temple the seven <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">golden</add> Candlesticks in the first Temple <lb xml:id="l449"/>represent those that worship in that Temple with respect to the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del></add> division <lb xml:id="l450"/>into the seven Churches of Asia, &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the</add> two <del type="cancelled">Ch</del> Candlesticks <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of olive tree</add> in the second <lb xml:id="l451"/>Temple represent those that worship in that Temple with respect <lb xml:id="l452"/>to the division of the Church catholick into two Churches <del type="cancelled">represented</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">made</add> <lb xml:id="l453"/><del type="strikethrough">the woman <del type="cancelled">which <gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> or Church cath</del> when the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">woman</add> received two wings <lb xml:id="l454"/>of a great eagle that she might fly <del type="strikethrough">into  <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wilderness.
