                <head rend="center" xml:id="hd1">Another Letter <lb type="intentional" xml:id="l1"/>written <hi rend="underline"><del type="strikethrough">by</del></hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to</add> a friend who had perused <lb xml:id="l2"/>the two former Letters.</head>
                <p xml:id="par1">I have read over the two letters concerning <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l3"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> corruption of the texts of Iohn 5.7 &amp; 1 Tim. 3.<lb xml:id="l4"/>16, &amp; am so far satisfied in the discourse that <lb xml:id="l5"/><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium"/></del> it has put me upon the curiosity of enquiring <lb xml:id="l6"/>whether the like corruptions, may not have <lb xml:id="l7"/>happened in other places &amp; upon search I <lb xml:id="l8"/>find reason to suspect a great many more places <lb xml:id="l9"/>of this kind then I <del type="strikethrough">could have beleived</del> expected. <lb xml:id="l10"/>I have subjoyned a short account of them, <unclear reason="copy" cert="medium">&amp; I</unclear> <lb xml:id="l11"/>should be glad to have your opinion <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> of the <lb xml:id="l12"/>matter.</p>
                <p xml:id="par2">Hincmarus &amp;c –<space dim="vertical" extent="2" unit="lines"/></p>
                <p rend="center" xml:id="par3">To <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> end of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> letter add.</p>
                <p xml:id="par4">By <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ethiopic Version I find that <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the</add> text <lb xml:id="l13"/>Philip 2.6 was anciently understood in another sense <lb xml:id="l14"/>then what <del type="strikethrough">has been</del> is now put upon it: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> makes <lb xml:id="l15"/>me suspect that some of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other Versions have <lb xml:id="l16"/>been tampered with. ffor <del type="strikethrough">that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> greek text is to <lb xml:id="l17"/>be understood in the sense of</del> the Ethiopic runs thus <lb xml:id="l18"/><hi rend="underline"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Qui eam fuit vultus Dei, non abripuit ei qui fuit <lb xml:id="l19"/>Deus</foreign></hi>, <del type="cancelled">&amp;c</del> &amp; that the Greek is to be understood in this <lb xml:id="l20"/>sense I beleive the following considerations will con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l21"/>vince you.</p>
                <p xml:id="par5"><del type="strikethrough">ffirst</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">3<hi rend="superscript">dly</hi></add>, <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἰσα</foreign> put absolutely <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a dative case after <lb xml:id="l22"/>it is <del type="strikethrough">never</del> used <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">not</add> for an adjective of equality but <lb xml:id="l23"/>always for an adverb of similitude signifying <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same <lb xml:id="l24"/>thing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <foreign xml:lang="gre">ὡσπερ</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="lat">sicut, instar</foreign>. ffor in this sense <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> tis <lb xml:id="l25"/>used twelve times in the booke of Iob &amp; never in <lb xml:id="l26"/>any other.</p>
                <p xml:id="par6"><del type="strikethrough">Secondly</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">4.</add> <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἐιναι ἰσα θεω</foreign> &amp; <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἐιναι ἰσα θὲον</foreign> are phrases <lb xml:id="l27"/>of like signification &amp; in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ancient greek language signi<lb xml:id="l28"/>fied nothing more then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/> <lb xml:id="l29"/>phrases were sometimes applied to <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/> <lb xml:id="l30"/>&amp; then signified <del type="strikethrough">nothing</del> <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/></p> <pb xml:id="p104v" n="104v"/>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par7"><anchor xml:id="n104v-01"/><note place="pageTop" target="#n104v-01"><foreign xml:lang="gre">τόν νυν ἰσα θεω Ι<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del>ακησιοι ορο<gap reason="damage" extent="3" unit="chars"/>ς</foreign></note> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> sometimes they were applied to men after death &amp; then <lb xml:id="l31"/>signified their being honoured <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/> <foreign xml:lang="gre">αποθεοσις</foreign> &amp; <lb xml:id="l32"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="words"/> honours as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heathens gave their Gods <lb xml:id="l33"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="4" unit="words"/></del></del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="copy" cert="medium">divine</unclear> worship</del> an <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἀποθέοσις</foreign> &amp; divine worship consequent thereto. So Homer of</add> – <foreign xml:lang="gre">τορὴν τε λελόγχασιν <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">γαρ</add> ισα θεοω</foreign> <lb xml:id="l34"/><foreign xml:lang="lat">honorem consecuti sunt instar Deorum</foreign>.<space dim="vertical" extent="2" unit="lines"/></p>
                <p xml:id="par8">5. <foreign xml:lang="gre">Τὸ ἐιναι ἰσα θεω</foreign> <del type="strikethrough">is usd by</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">therefore in the language of</add> S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Paul <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <lb xml:id="l35"/>name above every name <del type="cancelled">that at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> name of Iesus</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">that name at which</add></del> <choice><sic>every</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">signifies nothing else then the being honoured with divine worship. ffor he <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><unclear reason="over" cert="high">useth</unclear></add> it for the name above every name that name at <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> every</add> <lb xml:id="l36"/>knee should bow. <del type="strikethrough">ffor in exhorting <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Philippians to hum<lb xml:id="l37"/>ility he saith, Let this mind</del> ffor he saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Christ assu<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l38"/>med not <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> <foreign xml:lang="gre">τὸ ἐιναι ἰσα θεω</foreign> the being honoured as <lb xml:id="l39"/>God but <del type="cancelled">humb</del> emptied &amp; humbled himself &amp; therefore God <lb xml:id="l40"/>exalted him &amp; gave him a name above every name <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l41"/>at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> name of Iesus every knee should bow.</p>
                <p xml:id="par9">1 <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἁρπαγμὸν</foreign> signifies not <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> action of robbery but <lb xml:id="l42"/>the prey, as <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">though some commentators understand it as</unclear></del></add> is manifest by its being joyned <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by apposition</add> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same <lb xml:id="l43"/>case <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <foreign xml:lang="gre">τὸ ἐιναι ἰσα θεω</foreign> <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prey</del> &amp; also by <lb xml:id="l44"/>the consent of the Greek commentators</p>
                <p xml:id="par10">2. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἁρπαγμὸν <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del>ἡγήσεσθαι</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="lat">prædam ducere</foreign>, signifies <lb xml:id="l45"/>to look upon any thing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a desire of taking it. So <lb xml:id="l46"/>Tully, <foreign xml:lang="lat"><hi rend="underline">Omnium bona prædam suam duxit</hi></foreign>. And Heliodorus<anchor xml:id="n104v-02"/><note place="marginLeft" target="#n104v-02">Heliod Æthiop. Hist l 9.</note> <lb xml:id="l47"/><del type="strikethrough">when</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">of</add> a youth <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">who</add> resisted <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> temptation of a young woman, <lb xml:id="l48"/><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">saith</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">saith</add> <foreign xml:lang="gre">οὐχ᾽ ἅρπαγμα, οὔδε ἑρμαιον ηγηιται τὸ πραγμα</foreign> <lb xml:id="l49"/>he counts not this thing a prey &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">an</add> unexpected <del type="cancelled">good</del> gain. <lb xml:id="l50"/>And <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">again</unclear></del> in another place<anchor xml:id="n104v-03"/><note place="marginLeft" target="#n104v-03">ib lib 4</note> speaking of a thing not <lb xml:id="l51"/>easy to be <del type="strikethrough">compassed</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">obteined</add> he saith <foreign xml:lang="gre">οὐχ ἅρπαγμα τὸ <lb xml:id="l52"/>πραγμα</foreign> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">The thing is not a prey</add>. So Thucydides somewhere<space dim="vertical" extent="5" unit="lines"/></p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par11">And Grotius<anchor xml:id="n104v-04"/><note place="marginLeft" target="#n104v-04">Grot. in h. l.</note> informs us <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Syrians (in whose style <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l53"/>Apostles writ) used <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> phrase in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same sense: <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Now</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l54"/>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Paul <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del></add> uses <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> phrase in <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">this</add> sense is plain <lb xml:id="l55"/>by the opposition <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is put between the phrase &amp; <lb xml:id="l56"/><foreign xml:lang="gre">εκένοτεν <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/></foreign> by meanes of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> words <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἀλλα Ουχ᾽ <lb xml:id="l57"/><gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/> εκένοτεν <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">ἑαυτον</add></foreign> he did not <del type="strikethrough">think</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">count</add> <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/> which he had not, but <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> on the contrary <lb xml:id="l58"/><unclear reason="copy" cert="medium">emptied</unclear> himself of what he had.</p>
