Romanæ) <lb xml:id="l23"/><hi rend="underline">sedis potestatem fuit temporale illud imperium</hi></foreign> (speaking of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l24"/>whole imperial authority) <foreign xml:lang="lat"><hi rend="underline">commutatum, ut auctor est Leo Papa, <lb xml:id="l25"/>sermone de Apostolis</hi></foreign>. And the general Councel of Chalcedon <lb xml:id="l26"/>(in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Martianus <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Greek Emperor was present in person) in an <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">epistle</fw><pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/><fw type="pag" place="topLeft">1v</fw> epistle to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Leo called him <foreign xml:lang="lat">caput ecclesiarum</foreign>: if Bellarmin <lb xml:id="l27"/>say true <foreign xml:lang="lat">De Rom. Pont. lib 3 cap 3. § Hæc sententia</foreign>, who there <lb xml:id="l28"/>tells us that Phocas was not <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first that called <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope head <lb xml:id="l29"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches, but Iustinian did it before him &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel <lb xml:id="l30"/>of Caledon before him.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> contention about Images <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Leo Isaurus Gregory <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second <lb xml:id="l31"/>(saith Sigonius) not only excommunicated <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Emperor but absolved <lb xml:id="l32"/>all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people of Italy from their allegiance &amp; forbad <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pay<lb xml:id="l33"/><choice><abbr>m<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>ment</expan></choice> of any tribute to him: whereupon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> inhabitants of Rome <lb xml:id="l34"/>Campania Ravenna &amp; Penta<del type="over"><unclear cert="medium" reason="del">li</unclear></del><add indicator="no" place="over">p</add>olis (i.e. <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> region about Ancona imme<lb xml:id="l35"/>diately rebelled &amp; rose up<del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="high" reason="del">o</unclear></del> in opposition to their magistrates whom <lb xml:id="l36"/>they destroyed. At Ravenna Paulus <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Exarch was killed. At Rome <lb xml:id="l37"/>Peter <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> governour had his eyes put out &amp;c <foreign xml:lang="lat">Vnde Petavius <lb xml:id="l38"/>l 7. c 8 p 372 part pri Rat<del type="over">e</del><add indicator="no" place="over">i</add>o. Temp.</foreign> speaking of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> con<del type="over"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">s</unclear></del><add indicator="no" place="over">t</add>est of <lb xml:id="l39"/>Leo Is. &amp; Gregory 2<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> saith of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> latter, <foreign xml:lang="lat">Romæ et quicquid Italiæ re<lb xml:id="l40"/>liquum erat a Græcor<choice><orig>ū</orig><reg>um</reg></choice> abstraxit imperio, tributa<choice><abbr></abbr><expan>que</expan></choice> ijs ultra <lb xml:id="l41"/>impendere prohibuit</foreign>. The same is affirmed by Theophanes <lb xml:id="l42"/>&amp; Zonaras Sigebert, Otto Trisingensis, Conradus Vspergensis, Hiero<lb xml:id="l43"/>nymus Rubeus &amp;c. Sigonius saith <del type="over">d</del><add indicator="no" place="over">t</add>he people not only cast of <lb xml:id="l44"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Emperor but sware to be faithful to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope.</p>
<p xml:id="par6">The Ægyptian Dragon waited to devour the Hebrew chil<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l45"/>dren as soon as they were born, Then the Hebrew woman fled <lb xml:id="l46"/>into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wildernes from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Dragon, &amp; her child Moses was caught <lb xml:id="l47"/>up<del type="cancelled">t</del> to God &amp; to his throne. And as soon as they came <lb xml:id="l48"/>into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wildnesse they fell into Idolatry.</p>
<p xml:id="par7">Caught up to God &amp; to his throne (by an Hendiadis) for caught <lb xml:id="l49"/>up to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> throne of God</p>
<p xml:id="par8"><hi rend="underline">Remnant of her seed</hi>. When any general defection or ca<lb xml:id="l50"/>lamity is described in scripture, those whom it pleases God to <lb xml:id="l51"/>save out of it are seldome otherwise expressed then by a <lb xml:id="l52"/>remnant <del type="over">s</del><add indicator="no" place="over">S</add>ee 2 King. 19.4, 31. Nehem. 1.3 &amp; many other places <lb xml:id="l53"/>there are to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> like purpose.</p>
<p xml:id="par9">When S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Iohn <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">wrot</unclear></del> fell down to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>worship</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Angel, he an<lb xml:id="l54"/>swers: <hi rend="underline">I am thy fellow servant &amp; of thy bretheren that have <lb xml:id="l55"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> testimony of Iesus Christ for<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> the testimony of Iesus is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l56"/><choice><abbr>sp<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>spirit</expan></choice> of prophesy</hi>. Which answer is thus worded <del type="strikethrough">to shew that <lb xml:id="l57"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Angel is a</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> relation to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> two wit<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">t</unclear></del><add indicator="no" place="over" cert="high">n</add>esses, <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="medium" reason="del">he</unclear></del> to insinuate <lb xml:id="l58"/>that he <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest is a type thereof.</p>

<p xml:id="par10"><hi rend="underline">I have appointed thee a day for a year</hi> Ezek 4.4, 5, 6 <lb xml:id="l59"/>that is, <del type="strikethrough">that each day sho</del> a day to signify to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews a year. <lb xml:id="l60"/><del type="over">So</del><add indicator="no" place="over">In</add> Daniels weeks, Schabuahh, <del type="cancelled">(</del>according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> etimology of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l61"/>word signifies indeed seven in general &amp; may as well signify <lb xml:id="l62"/>seven years as seven days &amp; so does <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἑβδομὰς</foreign> in greek. <lb xml:id="l63"/>But according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> use of the word<del type="cancelled">s they</del> it signifies a week <lb xml:id="l64"/>of days as <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἑβδομὰς</foreign> does <del type="cancelled">&amp; <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">never</unclear> in <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> when ever it is put <lb xml:id="l65"/>absolutely <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> out any <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">thin</unclear></del> other expressions or circumstances to <lb xml:id="l66"/>determin it to <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> signify otherwise. <del type="strikethrough">With <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">s</unclear></del></del> In such circumstances <lb xml:id="l67"/>it may signify a week of years as in Gen 29.27. Levit 25.8. <lb xml:id="l68"/>Otherwise of it self it signifies in common speaking seven days &amp; <lb xml:id="l69"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> cannot be understood of years no more then <foreign xml:lang="gre">ἑβδομὰς</foreign> And <lb xml:id="l70"/>this is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> case of Daniel. <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">&amp;</unclear></del> The word there literally signifys <lb xml:id="l71"/>days, typically years, a day being put for a year. See Lu<del type="over"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">e</unclear></del><add indicator="no" place="over">k</add>e <lb xml:id="l72"/>13.32, 33</p>
<p xml:id="par11">Satan knoweth he hath but a short time Apoc 12.12 Ergo <lb xml:id="l73"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 days are natural days. Resp. <del type="cancelled">In respect o</del> Behold I come <lb xml:id="l74"/>quickly Apoc 3.11 &amp; 22.7, 12, 20 Four times repeated &amp; the last <lb xml:id="l75"/>time thus <hi rend="underline">Surely I come quickly</hi>, to make <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stronger impressi<lb xml:id="l76"/>on, &amp; yet that quickly is not yet <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> arrived. In respect <lb xml:id="l77"/>of God <del type="over">&amp;</del><add indicator="no" place="over">C</add>hrist &amp; Angels good &amp; bad a thousand years is but a <lb xml:id="l78"/>short time, especially to bad angels whose torments <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">ap</unclear></del> come <lb xml:id="l79"/>too quickly in their apprehension.</p>
<p xml:id="par12">Idolatry is every <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">where in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyps</add> charged on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Apostacy: <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; no other kind of</add> blasphemy. And <lb xml:id="l80"/>therefore blasphemy must signify Idolatry. Yet if you will: <lb xml:id="l81"/>Blaspheming the name of God &amp; his tabernacle &amp; those <lb xml:id="l82"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> dwell in heaven may be speaking evill of the true God <lb xml:id="l83"/>&amp; true Christ (his tabernacle <del type="cancelled">Ephes</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">Colos.</add> 2.9 so are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> saints Ephes 3.19 <lb xml:id="l84"/>1 Cor. 3.17) &amp; of the true saints as if they were fals ones.</p>

<p xml:id="par14">It was an ancient custome among the Romans to set a <lb xml:id="l93"/>mark upon their souldiers &amp; servants, that it might be <lb xml:id="l94"/>known to what <choice><abbr>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Master</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> servants &amp; to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> General <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> souldi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l95"/>ers belonged. The servants usually received this mark in <lb xml:id="l96"/>their foreheads &amp; the souldiers in their hands. To this <lb xml:id="l97"/>custome <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyps alludes in the sealed saints &amp; those <lb xml:id="l98"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> receive <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mark of the Beast, &amp; Chiefly in the latter <lb xml:id="l99"/>because they were subjects of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans <del type="cancelled">in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> there spoken <lb xml:id="l100"/>of.</p>
