<p>SL245, described in the Sotheby catalogue as <hi rend="italic">c.</hi> 300,000 words on 975 pp., was bought at the Sotheby sale by Gabriel Wells for £48 and sold to Yahuda on 1 Aug. 1936 for the sale price plus 15%. On 24 May 1949, Yahuda wrote to the London dealer Heinrich Eisemann, 'As to lot 245 the new arrangement and replacement of the pages resulted in 1,530 pages instead of 975 pages as many pages had to be taken out from other lots. But for this manuscript I have a customer who wants to pay a much higher price than $3,800 suggested by you.' If this was true, the prospective buyer's desire to part with his or her cash presumably waned. There must subsequently have been further reordering of the manuscript as the present Yahuda Ms. 7 amounts to nowhere near 1,530 pp.</p>

<p xml:id="par1">In the language of Prophesy Beasts <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; Birds</add> are put for nations <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; kingdoms &amp; their several parts for the analogous parts of the <lb xml:id="l5"/>kingdoms: as their heads for the governing parts, their horns <lb xml:id="l6"/>for the<del type="cancelled">ir</del> military powers, their wings for the armies &amp; go<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l7"/>vernments <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they streach over nations, their bodies for <lb xml:id="l8"/>the common people, their flesh for the riches, their bones <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">for</add> the fortified cities &amp; strong holds, their teeth nails &amp; hoofs <lb xml:id="l9"/>for bands of soldiers, such as are Legions <del type="strikethrough">Squadrons</del> &amp; Re<lb xml:id="l10"/>giments, <del type="cancelled">their</del> the number of the<del type="cancelled">ir</del> heads horns or wings <lb xml:id="l11"/>of any Beast for the number of governments dominions <lb xml:id="l12"/>&amp; particular kingdoms in that Beast, <del type="cancelled">&amp; sometimes for their</del> <lb xml:id="l13"/>&amp; the life of the Beast for the conti<add place="inline" indicator="no">n</add><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">u</add>ance of the nation even <lb xml:id="l14"/>after its dominion is taken away. And because shortlived Beasts <lb xml:id="l15"/>are put for long lived kingdoms, the days of the Beasts are put for the yeares of the kingdoms.</p>
<p xml:id="par2">The four Empires are represented by Daniel in <del type="strikethrough">two</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">two several</add> Visi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l16"/>ons, the first of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is Nebuchadnezzar's vision of the Image <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">composed</add> of four <lb xml:id="l17"/>metalls. In expounding this, Daniel tells us that the golden head, the <lb xml:id="l18"/>silver breast, the brazen belly &amp; thighs, &amp; the iron leggs <lb xml:id="l19"/>signify four successive kingdoms whereof the first is that of <lb xml:id="l20"/>Babylon. <hi rend="underline">Thou o king</hi>, saith he to Nebuchadnessar, <hi rend="underline">art king <lb xml:id="l21"/>of kings, for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom <lb xml:id="l22"/>power &amp; strength &amp; glory &amp; wheresoever the children of <lb xml:id="l23"/>men dwell, the <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">S</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>easts of the feild &amp; the fowls of the <lb xml:id="l24"/>heaven</hi> [that is the kingdoms of the world] <hi rend="underline">hath he given <lb xml:id="l25"/>into thine hand <del type="cancelled">that</del> &amp; hath made the ruler over them <lb xml:id="l26"/>all: Thou art this head of gold. And after thee</hi> [that is, after <lb xml:id="l27"/>thy kingdom] <hi rend="underline">shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee</hi> [the <lb xml:id="l28"/>Persian] <hi rend="underline">&amp; another third kingdom of brass</hi> [the Greecian] <hi rend="underline">which <lb xml:id="l29"/>shall beare rule over all the earth, &amp; the fourth kingdom</hi> <lb xml:id="l30"/>[the Roman] <hi rend="underline">shall be strong as iron forasmuch as iron breaketh <lb xml:id="l31"/>in pieces &amp; subdueth all things</hi>. – <hi rend="underline">And whereas thow sawest <lb xml:id="l32"/>the feet &amp; toes part of potters clay &amp; part of iron, the kingdom <lb xml:id="l33"/>shall be divided but there shall be in <del type="strikethrough">it but there shall be in</del> <lb xml:id="l34"/>it of the strength of iron – &amp; as the toes of the feet were part <lb xml:id="l35"/>of iron &amp; part of clay so the kingdom shall be partly strong &amp; <lb xml:id="l36"/>partly broken</hi>,</p>
<p xml:id="par3">The other is Daniels vision of the four Beasts, &amp; in expounding <lb xml:id="l37"/>this Daniel tells us that the Lion, the Bear, the Leopard &amp; the <lb xml:id="l38"/><choice><sic>deadfull</sic><corr>dreadfull</corr></choice> terrible &amp; exceedingly strong ten horned Beast <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> arose <lb xml:id="l39"/>successively out of the great sea, are <hi rend="underline">four kingdoms <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shall <lb xml:id="l40"/>arise out of the earth</hi>. And all interpreters agree that the<add place="inline" indicator="no">se</add> kingdoms <lb xml:id="l41"/>are the same with <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">sa</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add>ose signified by the four parts of the Image, <lb xml:id="l42"/>the ten horns <del type="strikethrough">answering to</del> of the fourth beast answering to the <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">ten</fw>
<pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">2r</fw> ten toes of the iron leggs, &amp; the everlasting kingdom of the <lb xml:id="l43"/>son of man <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">succeeds the four <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">leggs</unclear> kingdoms</del></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">reigns <del type="cancelled"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> appears</del> after the four Beasts</add> &amp; is over all <lb xml:id="l44"/>nations &amp; shall not pass away (Dan. VII.14) answering to the stone <lb xml:id="l45"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> smote the Image upon its feet &amp; brake it to pieces &amp; became <lb xml:id="l46"/>a great mountain &amp; filled the earth &amp; signifies a kingdom which <lb xml:id="l47"/>God shall set up &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shall break in pieces &amp; consume the former <lb xml:id="l48"/>kingdoms &amp; not be left to other people but stand for ever. Dan. <lb xml:id="l49"/>II.44, 45.</p>
<p xml:id="par4">The Greeks &amp; Latines recconed the great Empires of the world <lb xml:id="l50"/>in this order; the Assyrian, the Medic, the Persian, the Grecian &amp; <lb xml:id="l51"/>the Roman. <del type="cancelled">And</del> If with Daniel we omit the Assyrian the four <lb xml:id="l52"/>great Empires will be the Medic, the Persian, the Grecian &amp; the <lb xml:id="l53"/>Roman. The Medic &amp; Babylonian arose together out of the Assy<lb xml:id="l54"/>rian Empire &amp; were contemporary, &amp; being <del type="cancelled">twins may</del> brothers <lb xml:id="l55"/>&amp; twins may either of them or both together be taken for the <lb xml:id="l56"/>first of the four Empires. In the vision of the Ram &amp; He-Goat <lb xml:id="l57"/>Daniel reccons the Medic in the first place &amp; the Persian in <lb xml:id="l58"/>the second putting the <del type="cancelled">Goa</del> Rams two horns for those two Empires. <lb xml:id="l59"/>In the vision of the Image Daniel puts the Babylonian in <lb xml:id="l60"/>the first place saying to Nebuchadnezzar; <hi rend="underline">Thou art this <lb xml:id="l61"/>head of gold</hi>. In the vision of the four Beasts Daniel seems <lb xml:id="l62"/>to represent both together by the first Beast with <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">two</add> Eagles wings. <lb xml:id="l63"/>For the wings of a Beast represent the kingdoms of which <lb xml:id="l64"/>the Beast is composed, as is manifest by the four wings <lb xml:id="l65"/>of the Leopard. <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">T</unclear></del></p>
<p xml:id="par5"><hi rend="underline">The first Beast</hi>, saith Daniel, <hi rend="underline">was like a Lion</hi> [mag<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l66"/>nanimous &amp; strong] <hi rend="underline">&amp; had eagles wings</hi>, stretching out its <lb xml:id="l67"/>dominion over two large kingdoms the Babylonian &amp; the Medic. <lb xml:id="l68"/><hi rend="underline">And I beheld</hi>, saith Daniel, <hi rend="underline">till the wings thereof were <lb xml:id="l69"/>pluckt</hi>, that is, till its dominion was taken away. And then <lb xml:id="l70"/><del type="strikethrough">its dominion was taken away</del> it was not slain but only fell <lb xml:id="l71"/>down from that exalted <del type="cancelled">state</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">state of glory</add> in which its kings were worshipped <lb xml:id="l72"/>as Gods, &amp; being below <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">on the earth</add> <hi rend="underline">it was lifted up</hi> [before] <hi rend="underline">&amp; made to stand <lb xml:id="l73"/>on its</hi> [hinder] <hi rend="underline">feet as a man &amp; a mans heart was given unto <lb xml:id="l74"/>it</hi>. Its life was therefore prolonged after its dominion was taken away.</p>
<p xml:id="par6">The second Beast <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">was like a Bear, raised it self up on <lb xml:id="l75"/>one side</hi> to signify that <del type="cancelled">he</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">it</add> arose by raising one part of <del type="cancelled">h</del>i<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ts</add> people above <lb xml:id="l76"/>the other, the <del type="over">p</del><add place="over" indicator="no">P</add>ersians above the Medes. And <del type="cancelled">he</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">it</add> had <hi rend="underline">three ribs in <lb xml:id="l77"/>the mouth of it between the teeth of it</hi>, as if it was <del type="cancelled">was</del> eating them <lb xml:id="l78"/>that is <del type="cancelled">the</del> Sardes Babylon &amp; <del type="cancelled">Egypt</del> Memphys the three imperial <lb xml:id="l79"/>fenced cities of the conquered kingdoms of Lydia Babylon<add place="inline" indicator="no">ia</add> &amp; Egypt. <lb xml:id="l80"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">These it had in its mouth to distinguish them from its proper body.</add> <hi rend="underline">And they said unto it, Arise devour much flesh</hi>, that is, devour <lb xml:id="l81"/>the flesh upon the ribs, or the riches of the three kingdoms. For <lb xml:id="l82"/>the Medes &amp; Persians were poor people &amp; fared hardly &amp; were <lb xml:id="l83"/>cloathed in leather untill they conquered those three <del type="cancelled">very</del> <lb xml:id="l84"/>rich &amp; flourishing kingdoms, <del type="cancelled">And saith</del> whereby they grew very <lb xml:id="l85"/>rich; <del type="strikethrough">And the fo</del> as Daniel notes <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">also</add> in another Prophesy, <del type="strikethrough">where he telling us</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">saying</add> <lb xml:id="l86"/>that the fourth king of Persia shall be far richer then all the former <lb xml:id="l87"/>&amp; by his power through his riches he shall stirr up all against the <lb xml:id="l88"/>realm of Greece.</p>
<p xml:id="par7">The third Beast was <hi rend="underline">like a Leopard</hi> (nimble &amp; fierce) <hi rend="underline">&amp; had upon <lb xml:id="l89"/>the back of it four wings of a fowl. The Beast had also four heads, &amp;</hi> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight"><hi rend="underline">dominion</hi></fw>

<pb xml:id="p003r" n="3r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">3r</fw> <hi rend="superscript">dominion was given to it</hi>. It was therefore the Empire of <lb xml:id="l90"/>the Greeks which after the reign of Alexander the great <lb xml:id="l91"/>&amp; his sons, brake into four great kingdoms <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">he</unclear></del> to the four winds <lb xml:id="l92"/>of heaven (Dan. XI.4) <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> kingdoms are here represented by the <lb xml:id="l93"/>four wings &amp; four heads of this Beast.</p>
<p xml:id="par8">The fourth Beast was therefore the Empire <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> reigned next <lb xml:id="l94"/>after the Greeks &amp; subdued them. This Beast was <hi rend="underline">dreadfull &amp; <lb xml:id="l95"/>terrible &amp; strong exceedingly &amp; had great iron teeth &amp; nails <lb xml:id="l96"/>of brass &amp; devoured the whole earth &amp; trode it down &amp; <lb xml:id="l97"/>brake it in pieces</hi>, &amp; therefore it was the biggest the strongest <lb xml:id="l98"/>&amp; the most warlike of all the Empires: &amp; such was the <lb xml:id="l99"/>Roman. This Beast <hi rend="underline">was divers from all the former king<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l100"/>doms</hi>. They were <gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/> governed by kings this by a Senate <lb xml:id="l101"/>&amp; Consuls. And it <hi rend="underline">had ten horns in its head, &amp; the ten <lb xml:id="l102"/>horns out of this kingdom are ten kingdoms which shall <lb xml:id="l103"/>arise</hi>. This fourth beast is properly the Empire of the <lb xml:id="l104"/>Latines <del type="over">:</del><add place="over" indicator="no">.</add> For all the four Beasts are still in being. The <lb xml:id="l105"/><del type="cancelled">T</del> three first <hi rend="underline">had their d</hi>omi<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">ni</add>ons taken away by the Beasts <lb xml:id="l106"/>which rose up next after them, <hi rend="underline">but their lives were pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l107"/>longed</hi>. The Lion had a mans heart given to it &amp; is still <lb xml:id="l108"/>the nations of <del type="cancelled">Me</del> Babylonia &amp; Media. The Bear is still <lb xml:id="l109"/>the nations of <del type="cancelled">Pe</del> Persia. The Leopard is still the na<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l110"/>tions of Greece Asia minor Egypt &amp; Syria, and the <lb xml:id="l111"/>nations of the Roman Empire on this side Greece are the <lb xml:id="l112"/>proper body of the fourth Beast. This Beast trode down <lb xml:id="l113"/>the nations represented by the third Beast &amp; stamped upon <lb xml:id="l114"/>them &amp; reigned over them till the building of Constan<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l115"/>tinople &amp; the erecting of the Constantinopolitan Empire: <lb xml:id="l116"/><del type="cancelled">&amp; then being separated from them</del> &amp; as the second Beast <lb xml:id="l117"/>had three ribs in his mouth to distinguish his conquests <lb xml:id="l118"/>from his proper body so the nations of the former Em<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l119"/>pires conquered by the <del type="strikethrough">Latines</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">fourth Beast</add> are to be distinguished from <lb xml:id="l120"/>the proper body of th<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">at</add> <del type="cancelled">fourth</del> Beast. Now that Beast <lb xml:id="l121"/>upon the erecting of the Constantinopolitan empire being <lb xml:id="l122"/>separated from the nations of the other Beast which <lb xml:id="l123"/>he had <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">trode down &amp;</add> conquered, reigned alone in the west &amp; there <lb xml:id="l124"/>brake into ten kingdoms A.C. 408 &amp; 409 as we shewed <lb xml:id="l125"/>above, &amp; these kingdoms are its ten horns.</p>
<p xml:id="par9">Now Daniel <hi rend="underline">considered the horns &amp; behold there came <lb xml:id="l126"/>up among them another little horn before whom there were <lb xml:id="l127"/>three of the first horns pluckt up by the roots &amp; behold in <lb xml:id="l128"/>this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man &amp; a mouth <lb xml:id="l129"/>speaking great things &amp; its look was more stout then its <lb xml:id="l130"/>fellows, &amp; it made war with the saints &amp; prevailed against <lb xml:id="l131"/>them</hi>. And one that stood by &amp; made Daniel <del type="strikethrough">understand</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">know</add> the <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">interpretation</fw>
<pb xml:id="p004r" n="4r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">4r</fw> interpretation of these things told him that <hi rend="underline">the ten horns were <lb xml:id="l132"/>ten kings that should arise &amp; another</hi> [king] <hi rend="underline">should arise after <lb xml:id="l133"/>them &amp; be divers from the first</hi> [kings] <hi rend="underline">&amp; subdue three kings <lb xml:id="l134"/>&amp; speak great words against the most High <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; wear out the saints</add> &amp; think to change <lb xml:id="l135"/>times &amp; laws &amp;</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><hi rend="superscript">that</hi> [after he had subdued the three kings]</add> <hi rend="superscript">they should be given into his hand for a <lb xml:id="l136"/>time times &amp; half a time</hi>. This little horn in being numbred <lb xml:id="l137"/>amongst the other horns &amp; called a king must be a little <lb xml:id="l138"/>kingdom: for by <del type="cancelled">kin</del> horns &amp; kings Daniel understands king<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l139"/>doms. But it was of a different kind from the other ten <lb xml:id="l140"/>kingdoms having a life or soul peculiar to it self with eyes &amp; <lb xml:id="l141"/>a mouth. By its eyes it was a Seer &amp; by its mouth speaking <lb xml:id="l142"/>great things <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; changing laws</add> it was a Prophet as well as King. And such a <lb xml:id="l143"/>Seer a <del type="cancelled">Pr</del> Prophet &amp; a King was the Church of Rome. This <lb xml:id="l144"/>was a dominion very divers from all other dominions, &amp; the <lb xml:id="l145"/>only dominion among the ten kingdoms to which the<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l146"/>phesy <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of this horn</add> can be applied</p>
<p xml:id="par10">A Seer <foreign xml:lang="gre">Ε᾽πίσκοπος</foreign> is a Bishop in the litteral sense of <lb xml:id="l147"/>the word, &amp; this Church claims the universal Bishopric.</p>
<p xml:id="par11">With his mouth he gives laws to kings <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as an Oracle</add> &amp; pretends to <lb xml:id="l148"/>infallibility &amp; that his <del type="cancelled">laws</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">dictates</add> are binding to the whole world <lb xml:id="l149"/>which is to be a Prophet in the highest degree. He claims <lb xml:id="l150"/>a power of dispensing with Gods laws, of forgiving or retaining <lb xml:id="l151"/>sins, of remitting or relaxing the pains of Purgatory &amp; Hell, <lb xml:id="l152"/>of granting indulgencies, of canonizing saints, of dispensing of <lb xml:id="l153"/>kingdoms by divine right, of absolving subjects from their oaths <lb xml:id="l154"/>of allegiance &amp; of depriving all his opposers of heaven by <lb xml:id="l155"/>excommunication. This is his mouth. This is his look more <lb xml:id="l156"/>stout then his fellows. And he is the only dominion in the <lb xml:id="l157"/>world who pretends to such an universal dictatorship &amp; <lb xml:id="l158"/>who speaks such great words against the most High. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">How he rose up with such a <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">spiritual</add> power we have shewed above.</add> It remains <lb xml:id="l159"/>that we shew how he subdued three of <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">those kings of kingdoms which from their first number were called</add> <del type="strikethrough">those kings or kingdoms</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the ten kings</add> <lb xml:id="l160"/>&amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">how he</add> became a kingdom himself with a temporal power.</p>
<p xml:id="par12">The Francks were heathens till the reign of Clodovæus their <lb xml:id="l161"/>king. He being converted to the Roman <del type="cancelled">Catholic</del> religion A.C. 496 <lb xml:id="l162"/>subjected his kingdom to the Pope, &amp; the Pope made Remigius Arch<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l163"/>bishop of Rhemes his deputy Bishop over France.<anchor xml:id="n004r-01"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n004r-01"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Sigon. de Occid. Imp. lib. XVI. an. 496, 507.</foreign></note> This was the <lb xml:id="l164"/><del type="strikethrough">first</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">first</add> considerable step <del type="strikethrough">made</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">gained</add> by the Pope towards the Vniversal <lb xml:id="l165"/>Bishopric <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">over<gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/> the barbarous nations who had invaded the Empire</add>. Then Clodovæus having gained a great victory over <lb xml:id="l166"/>the Goths received from the Greek Emperor Anastasius a splendid <lb xml:id="l167"/>crown adorned with gemms besides other presents: &amp; having <lb xml:id="l168"/>worn it one day for that victory A.C. 507, sent it seven years <lb xml:id="l169"/>after <del type="cancelled">as</del> a present to <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">Re</unclear></del> the Pope, as more fit to adorn that <lb xml:id="l170"/>august head then his own. This crown, as Sigebert tells us, was <lb xml:id="l171"/>afterwards called Regnum, the <del type="cancelled">Reign or</del> Kingdom. And this was <lb xml:id="l172"/>the first instance of the Popes wearing a temporal crown <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as king of Rome.</add> <del type="strikethrough">&amp; gives <lb xml:id="l173"/>an occasion to reccon him hence forward amongst the horns as a temporal <lb xml:id="l174"/>king. For the Emperor Leo Isaurus A. C. 726 to put a stop to the <lb xml:id="l175"/>worship of Images <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> had been long overspreading the east called <lb xml:id="l176"/>a meeting of Counsellours &amp; Bishops in his Palace, &amp; by their advice <unclear reason="del" cert="low">sent</unclear> out an edict against that worship, &amp; wrote to Pope <lb xml:id="l177"/>Gregory 2<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> tha<unclear reason="del" cert="high">t</unclear> a general Council might be called. But the <lb xml:id="l178"/>Pope thereupon calling a Council at Rome confirmed the worship of</del> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight"><del type="strikethrough">Images</del></fw> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">But he had not yet a kingdom for <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he should wear it.</add> <add indicator="no" place="interlinear">He was now <del type="strikethrough">Lord</del> Lord of the <del type="strikethrough">Alpes Cott</del> Province <lb xml:id="l179"/>called the Alpes Cottiæ <del type="strikethrough">besides <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">some</add> other territories in several <lb xml:id="l180"/>other places. Yet these possessions were rather <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">Cha</unclear></del> but his Metropolis <lb xml:id="l181"/><del type="strikethrough">Rome <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">with <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="4"/></add> <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="4"/> hands of the Ostrogoths</del> Rome with all Italy was <del type="strikethrough">now</del> under the dominion of the Ostrogoths.</add><anchor xml:id="n004r-02"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n004r-02"><p xml:id="par13"><foreign xml:lang="lat"><del type="strikethrough">Sigon. de Regno Italiæ lib. <pb xml:id="p005r" n="5r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">5r</fw><p xml:id="par15">In the year 524, the Greek Emperor Iustin put <lb xml:id="l182"/>out an Edict that the Churches of the Arians should <lb xml:id="l183"/>be every where consecrated to the Catholick religion <lb xml:id="l184"/>Whereupon Theodericus the Gothick king of Italy, sent <lb xml:id="l185"/>Pope Iohn I with some of the Senators of Rome to <lb xml:id="l186"/>the Emperor to tell him that unless he restored the <lb xml:id="l187"/>Churches to their owners, he would treat the Catholicks <lb xml:id="l188"/>in Italy in the same manner. The Pope going the <lb xml:id="l189"/>next year upon this Embassy, was received very honour<lb xml:id="l190"/>ably by the Emperour &amp; received great presents from <lb xml:id="l191"/>him, &amp; instead of perswading the Emperour to restore <lb xml:id="l192"/>the Churches, conspired with him against restoring <lb xml:id="l193"/>them, &amp; consecrated as many of them as he could to <lb xml:id="l194"/>the use of the Catholicks: &amp; upon his ret<del type="cancelled">o</del>urn to Italy <lb xml:id="l195"/>was imprisoned for it by Theodericus his king, &amp; wrote from <lb xml:id="l196"/>prison to the  bishops of Italy to arm themselves with the <lb xml:id="l197"/>sword of the spirit against the Arian religion for extir<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l198"/>pating it, &amp; to consecrate all the churches of the Arians <lb xml:id="l199"/>(that is of the Goths) wherever they could find them, for <lb xml:id="l200"/>the use of the Catholicks, as he had done at Constantinople. <lb xml:id="l201"/>He was therefore confederate with the Greek Emperor <lb xml:id="l202"/>against his king.</p>
<p xml:id="par16">Iustinian succeeded Iustin, &amp; in the year 532 designing <lb xml:id="l203"/>to make war upon the Vandals sent to Pope Iohn II great <lb xml:id="l204"/>presents with <choice><sic>a</sic><corr>an</corr></choice> Epistle conteining a profession of his faith <lb xml:id="l205"/>to be approved by his Holiness, &amp; represented therein that he <lb xml:id="l206"/>had always a desire to keep the unity of the Apostolic seat <lb xml:id="l207"/>&amp; therefore made hast to subject &amp; unite all the Priests <lb xml:id="l208"/>of the whole eastern territory to the seat of his Holiness <lb xml:id="l209"/>– which was the Head of all the Churches. This he did <lb xml:id="l210"/>to engage all those of the Church of Rome in his party <lb xml:id="l211"/>during the wars which he was going to make against <lb xml:id="l212"/>those of another religion.</p>
<p xml:id="par17">When he had conquered the Vandals &amp; was begin<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l213"/>ning a war upon the Goths, Theodahatus <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">their king</add> the successor of <lb xml:id="l214"/>Theodericus sent Pope Agapetus upon an embassy to Iusti<lb xml:id="l215"/>nian for putting a<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> stop to the war. Agapetus went very <lb xml:id="l216"/>unwillingly, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">being in the Emperors interest &amp;</add> was received very splendidly by the Emperor &amp; <lb xml:id="l217"/>against the mind of the Emperor &amp; Empress, deposed Anthi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l218"/>mius Patriarch of Constantinople, &amp; substituted Mennas into <lb xml:id="l219"/>that bishopric. Whence it is manifest that the Emperor <lb xml:id="l220"/>for keeping the Church of Rome in his interest against <lb xml:id="l221"/>the Goths still suffered the Bishop of Rome to act in the <lb xml:id="l222"/>east as universal bishop.</p>
<p xml:id="par18">The next year A.C. 536 Bellisarius having taken <lb xml:id="l223"/>Sicily <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">from the <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del></add>, sailed into Italy with the Emperors forces &amp; landing at <lb xml:id="l224"/>Regium, the people in all the villages out of hatred to the <lb xml:id="l225"/>Goths immed<del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>ately came over to him. Thence he marched to <lb xml:id="l226"/>Naples &amp; the Neopolitans were inclined to surrender, but the <lb xml:id="l227"/>city being garrisoned by Goths held out a seige of 20 days. <lb xml:id="l228"/>Thence he marched to Rome, the Romans by the perswasion <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">of</fw>

<pb xml:id="p006r" n="6r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">6r</fw> of Pope Silverius inviting him, &amp; promising to surrender <lb xml:id="l229"/>their city so soon as he came near it. And this was done <lb xml:id="l230"/>in December A.C. 536, the garrison of the Goths withdrawing <lb xml:id="l231"/>when they found themselves betrayed. Sammicum, Calabria, Apulia <lb xml:id="l232"/>Beneventum &amp; all Italy southward of Rome revolted also <lb xml:id="l233"/>to Belisarius: &amp; so did Tuscia, Narnia, Spoletum, Perusia <lb xml:id="l234"/>&amp; some other places. The next year the Goths besieged <lb xml:id="l235"/>Rome with an army of an hundred &amp; fifty thousand men. <lb xml:id="l236"/>Bel<del type="cancelled">l</del>isarius had but a small army <add place="supralinear marginRight" indicator="yes">of about 5000 men having left the greater part of his army in garrisons</add> but being assisted by the Ro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l237"/>mans he held out the siege a whole year &amp; 9 days &amp; ruined <lb xml:id="l238"/>the army of the Goths so that the Goths out of desperation <lb xml:id="l239"/>were forced to raise the siege. Then Dacius Bishop of <lb xml:id="l240"/>Millain with the chief men of that city went to <choice><sic>Belisa<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l241"/>sarius</sic><corr>Belisarius</corr></choice> desiring him to send them a small force because <lb xml:id="l242"/>Millain &amp; all Liguria were ready to revolt. And accordingly <lb xml:id="l243"/>a force <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of a thousand men</add> being sent, Millain with the greatest part of <lb xml:id="l244"/>Liguria revolted, &amp; put the Goths upon besieging that City. <lb xml:id="l245"/>And at the same time the garrison of the Goths in Ariminum <lb xml:id="l246"/>suspecting the fidelity of the citizens retired &amp; left that <lb xml:id="l247"/>city to the forces of Belisarius: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> put the Goths upon be<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l248"/>sieging that city also. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">✝</add><addSpan spanTo="#addend005v-01" place="p005v" startDescription="f 5v" endDescription="f 6r" resp="#mjh"/> <del type="blockStrikethrough">✝ They took Millain <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the next winter</add>, levelled it with the ground, slew all the male<del type="cancelled">s</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">citizens</add> for <lb xml:id="l249"/>their perfidy <del type="cancelled">&amp; sold</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in revolting &amp; gave</add> the weomen <del type="strikethrough">for slaves</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to their allies the Burgundians for servants,</add>, but were forced to raise <lb xml:id="l250"/>the siege of Ariminum, &amp; retire to Ravenna their capital city <lb xml:id="l251"/>where they were besieged <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> their king <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/> Vitiges</del> Vitiges</add> by Belisarius, &amp; forced to <lb xml:id="l252"/>surrender, <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">upon</unclear> (</del> A.C. 539<del type="cancelled">)</del>, &amp; their king with his Queen were sent prisoners to Constantinople.</del></p>
<p xml:id="par19">✝ They took Millain the next winter, levelled it even <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the <lb xml:id="l253"/>grownd, slew all the male citizens <del type="strikethrough">for revolting &amp; gave</del> to the <lb xml:id="l254"/>number of three hundred thousand for revolting, &amp; gave the <lb xml:id="l255"/>weomen to their allies the Burgundians for servants; but <lb xml:id="l256"/>were forced to raise the siege <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> of Ariminum &amp; retire to <lb xml:id="l257"/>Ravenna their <del type="cancelled">metropolis</del> capital city, where they were be<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l258"/>sieged <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by Belisarius</add> &amp; forced to surrender A.C. 539, &amp; their King Vitiges <lb xml:id="l259"/>with his Queen were sent prisoners to Constantinople. Thus <lb xml:id="l260"/>the <del type="cancelled">Greek Bishop of</del> Church of Rome by conspiring with <lb xml:id="l261"/>the Greek Emperor against the Goths on account of re<lb xml:id="l262"/>ligion, &amp; causing the Latines to revolt to the Greeks, gave such <lb xml:id="l263"/>a turn to this war as enabled Bel<del type="cancelled">l</del>isarius with a small force <lb xml:id="l264"/>assisted by the revolting Latines to ruin the Gothick Kingdom. <lb xml:id="l265"/>And this was the first of <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the</add> three horns which fell before <lb xml:id="l266"/>the little horn. This Kingdom reigned over the Pope &amp; <lb xml:id="l267"/>therefore was to be removed to make way for his rise. </p>
<p xml:id="par20">After this Belisarius being recalled, the Goths took up arms <lb xml:id="l268"/>again &amp; revived the war for a time &amp; in this contention Rome was <lb xml:id="l269"/>almost dispeopled &amp; laid in ruins, &amp; the bishop of Rome lost his authority <lb xml:id="l270"/>in the east till the Emperor Phocas restored it, &amp; the Lombards A.C. <lb xml:id="l271"/>568 invading Italy, took from him the Alpes Cottiæ &amp; restored them <lb xml:id="l272"/>not till the reign of Pope Iohn VI A.C. 704.</p>

But the Pope <lb xml:id="l277"/>thereupon calling a Council at Rome, confirmed the worship of <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">Images</fw><anchor xml:id="addend005v-01"/> <del type="blockStrikethrough">Thus the Church of Rome by conspiring <lb xml:id="l278"/>with the Greek Emperor against the Goths &amp; inclining the <lb xml:id="l279"/>people of their communion to revolt from them <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; thereby putting <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="2"/></del> them upon sieges,</add><choice><sic>,</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> gave such <lb xml:id="l280"/>a turn to this war as enabled Belisarius with a small force <lb xml:id="l281"/>assisted by the revolting Romans to ruin the Gothic Kingdom. <lb xml:id="l282"/>The Francks also seized part of the Gothic territories.</del></p>
<p xml:id="par22"><del type="blockStrikethrough">And now the Pope having by the assistance of his <lb xml:id="l283"/>allies subdued a kingdom <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> reigned over him &amp; hindred <lb xml:id="l284"/>his rise, deserved by this conquest &amp; the acquisition of the <lb xml:id="l285"/>universal bishopric over the Greek Churches to weare <lb xml:id="l286"/>the Crown which had been lately conveyed to him from <lb xml:id="l287"/>the Emperor by the King of the Franks, they help<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l288"/>ing him as well to the conquest as to the <del type="over">c</del><add place="over" indicator="no">C</add>rown.</del></p>
<p xml:id="par23"><del type="blockStrikethrough">Yet the Pope being carried prisoner to <del type="cancelled">Rome</del> <lb xml:id="l289"/>Constantinople A.C. 545 &amp; there imprisoned by Iustinian <lb xml:id="l290"/>&amp; the City of Rome being by these wars almost emptied <lb xml:id="l291"/>of inhabitants &amp; its buildings ruined; the Greek bishops <lb xml:id="l292"/>A.C. 551 began to disregard his authority till the Emperor <lb xml:id="l293"/>Phocas restored it.</del></p>

<pb xml:id="p007r" n="7r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">7r</fw> Images, excommunicated the Greek Emperor, absolved his <lb xml:id="l300"/>subjects in Italy from their obedience &amp; forbade them to pay <lb xml:id="l301"/>tribute to him &amp; thereby got the <del type="over">c</del><add place="over" indicator="no">C</add>ity <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; Duchy of</add> Rome into his own hands <lb xml:id="l302"/>&amp; caused a great part of the Exarchate or kingdom of Ravenna <lb xml:id="l303"/>to revolt &amp; kill Paul the Exarch. And the Lombards also being <lb xml:id="l304"/>Zealous for the worship of Images &amp; pretending to favour the <lb xml:id="l305"/>cause of the Pope invaded the cities of the Exarchate. <del type="blockStrikethrough">Hitherto <lb xml:id="l306"/>Rome had been a Dukedome in the hands of the Emperor &amp; <lb xml:id="l307"/>governed by a Duke appointed by the Exarch or deputy King <lb xml:id="l308"/>of Ravenna: henceforward <del type="cancelled">it</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the City &amp; Duchy</add> became the temporal Metropolis <lb xml:id="l309"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; Principality</add> of the Pope.</del> <del type="strikethrough">as well as his Episcopal seat.</del></p>

III. an. 750</foreign></note>At length Pope Zechary A.C. 752 fearing the power of <lb xml:id="l310"/>the Lombards deposed Childeric a sloathfull &amp; useless king <lb xml:id="l311"/>of France &amp; the last of the race of Merovæus, &amp; absolving <lb xml:id="l312"/>his subjects from their oath of allegiance gave the kingdom <lb xml:id="l313"/>to Pipin <del type="strikethrough">king of Austrasia &amp; Suevia, for ever,</del> <add place="supralinear inline" indicator="yes">the Maior of the Pallace</add>, hoping thereby <lb xml:id="l314"/>to strengthen himself by making a new &amp; potent friend. <lb xml:id="l315"/><del type="strikethrough">Thus by conjunction of these two kingdoms did one of <lb xml:id="l316"/>the ten horns fall before the little horn. And while the Pope <lb xml:id="l317"/>had a temporal Metropolis &amp; his temporal power in France <lb xml:id="l318"/><foreign xml:lang="lat">(in ordine ad spiritualia)</foreign> was grown so very great, he deserves <lb xml:id="l319"/>now much more then formerly to weare the temporal crown <lb xml:id="l320"/>sent him by Clodovæus.</del> <lb xml:id="l321"/><anchor xml:id="n007r-02"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n007r-02"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Sigon. de Reg. III. an. 752</foreign></note><add place="inline" indicator="no">And</add> The same year in March this Pope died, &amp; Stephen <lb xml:id="l322"/>succeeded, &amp; before the end of the year the Lombards took <lb xml:id="l323"/>Ravenna &amp; put an end to the Exarchate. And this is the <lb xml:id="l324"/>second of the three kingdoms that fell <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">all</unclear></del> before the little horn.</p>
<p xml:id="par26"><anchor xml:id="n007r-03"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n007r-03"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Sigon. ib. an. 753, 754, 755.</foreign></note>Then Pope Stephen knowing better how to deale with <lb xml:id="l325"/>the Greek Emperor then with the Lombards, went the next year <lb xml:id="l326"/>to their king to perswade him to return the Exarchate to the <lb xml:id="l327"/>Emperor, but this not succeeding he went into France &amp; <lb xml:id="l328"/>perswaded Pipin to take the Exarchate &amp; Pentapolis from the <lb xml:id="l329"/>Lombards &amp; give it <add place="inline" indicator="no">to</add> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Peter. And accordingly Pipin A.C. 754 <lb xml:id="l330"/>came with an army into Italy &amp; made Aistulphus king of <lb xml:id="l331"/>the Lombards promise the surrender. But the next year <lb xml:id="l332"/>Aistulphus on the contrary, to revenge himself on the Pope <lb xml:id="l333"/>besieged the city of Rome. Whereupon Pope Stephen sent letters <lb xml:id="l334"/>to Pipin wherein he told him that if he came not speedily against <lb xml:id="l335"/>the Lombards, <foreign xml:lang="lat"><hi rend="underline">pro datâ sibi potentia alienandum fore a regno <lb xml:id="l336"/>Dei et vita æterna</hi></foreign>, he would excommunicate him. <del type="cancelled">as he had done <lb xml:id="l337"/>the Greek Emperor.</del> Pipin therefore <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">fearing a revolt of his new subjects &amp;</add> being <del type="strikethrough">devoted</del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">indebted</add> to the Church <lb xml:id="l338"/>of Rome came speedily with an army into Italy, raised the siege, <lb xml:id="l339"/>besieged the Lombards in Papia &amp; forced them to surrender the <lb xml:id="l340"/>Exarchate &amp; region of Pentapolis to the Pope for a perpetual <lb xml:id="l341"/>possession. And now Ravenna &amp; the rest of the Exarchate were <lb xml:id="l342"/>surrendered some few cities excepted, &amp; the keys sent to Rome &amp; <lb xml:id="l343"/>laid upon the Confession of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Peter, that is, upon his Tomb at <lb xml:id="l344"/>the high Altar, <foreign xml:lang="lat"><hi rend="underline">in signum veri perpetui<choice><orig>qꝫ</orig><reg>que</reg></choice> dominij sed pietate Regis <lb xml:id="l345"/>gratuita</hi></foreign>, as the inscription of a coin of Pipin has it. This was in <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">the</fw>

<pb xml:id="p008r" n="8r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">8r</fw> the year of Christ 755. And hence forward the Popes left off in <lb xml:id="l346"/>their Epistles &amp; Bulls to note the years of the Greek Emperors <lb xml:id="l347"/>as they had hitherto done.</p>
<p xml:id="par27"><anchor xml:id="n008r-01"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n008r-01"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Sigon. ib. an. 773.</foreign></note>Afterwards the Lombards invading the Popes countries, Pope Adrian <lb xml:id="l348"/>sent to Charles the great the son of Pipin to come to his assistance, <lb xml:id="l349"/>and accordingly Charles entred Italy with an army, invaded the <lb xml:id="l350"/>Lombards, overthrew their kingdome, became master of their coun<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l351"/>tries, &amp; restored <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to</add> the Pope not only <del type="cancelled">to</del> what they had taken from <lb xml:id="l352"/>him but also the rest of the Exarchate which they had pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l353"/>mised Pipin to restore to the Pope but had hitherto deteined, <lb xml:id="l354"/>&amp; also gave him some cities of the Lombards <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; was <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">mutually</add> made Patricius by the Romans</add>. These things <lb xml:id="l355"/>were done in the years 773 &amp; 774. And this is the third <lb xml:id="l356"/>kingdom which fell before the little horn.</p>
<p xml:id="par28"><anchor xml:id="n008r-02"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n008r-02"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Sigon. de Regno Italiæ l. IV. an. 799, 800, 801.</foreign></note>The Pope reigned now over the Exarchate &amp; part <lb xml:id="l357"/>of the kingdom of the Lombards, but some of his <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">new</unclear></del> sub<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l358"/>jects being desirous to shake off his government &amp; recover <lb xml:id="l359"/>their ancient <del type="cancelled">rights</del> liberty raised a great commotion <lb xml:id="l360"/>against him, accused him of certain crimes &amp; made him <lb xml:id="l361"/>fly to the king of France. Whereupon Charles the great <lb xml:id="l362"/>went again <del type="strikethrough">with an army</del> to Rome with an armed force <lb xml:id="l363"/> to resettle him, &amp; upon a day appointed presided in a <lb xml:id="l364"/>Council of Ital<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">l</unclear></del>ian &amp; French Bishops to hear both par<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l365"/>ties. But when the Popes adversaries expected to be heard <lb xml:id="l366"/>the Council declared that he who was the supreme Iudge <lb xml:id="l367"/>of all men was above being judged by any other then <lb xml:id="l368"/>himself. And thereupon the Pope made a solemn decla<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l369"/>ration of his innocence, &amp; in recompence for the service <lb xml:id="l370"/>&amp; honour done him created Charles Emperor of the Ro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l371"/>mans &amp; Charles at his coronation took this oath of Fealty <lb xml:id="l372"/>to the Pope: <foreign xml:lang="lat"><hi rend="underline">In nomine Christi spondeo atq<choice><orig>qꝫ</orig><reg>que</reg></choice> polliceor Ego <lb xml:id="l373"/>Carolus Imperator coram Deo &amp; beato Petro Apostolo <lb xml:id="l374"/>me protectorem ac defensorem fore hujus sanctæ Romanæ <lb xml:id="l375"/><choice><sic>Ecclsiæ</sic><corr>Ecclesiæ</corr></choice> in omnibus utilitatibus quatenus divino fultus <lb xml:id="l376"/>fuero adjutorio prout sciero potero<choice><orig>qꝫ</orig><reg>que</reg></choice></hi></foreign>. This was done in <lb xml:id="l377"/>December A. C. 800.</p>
<p xml:id="par29">Thus the Pope &amp; <del type="strikethrough">the King of Austrasia</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">his friend the king of France</add> conspired to raise <lb xml:id="l378"/>one another &amp; the Pope rose up among the ten kings by <lb xml:id="l379"/>rooting up three of them before him. The kingdom of <del type="strikethrough">France <lb xml:id="l380"/>he gave to his friend;</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">the Ostrogoths he helped the Greek Emperor to subdue as Arian;</add> the kingdom of Ravenna he gained to <lb xml:id="l381"/>himself; &amp; the kingdom of Lombardy he divided between <lb xml:id="l382"/>himself &amp; <del type="strikethrough">his friend.</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the King of France.</add> And in token that he is a king as <lb xml:id="l383"/>well as a Bishop, he weares the crowns of <del type="cancelled">those</del> three king<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l384"/>doms upon his head in form of a triple crown &amp; carries the <lb xml:id="l385"/>keys of the cities of <del type="strikethrough">two of</del> the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">two last</add> kingdoms in his hand. And <lb xml:id="l386"/>being exalted above <del type="over">k</del><add place="over" indicator="no">K</add>ings &amp; Emperors &amp; declared by <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">a</add> Council <lb xml:id="l387"/>above all humane judicature &amp; the supreme Iudge of all <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">men</fw>

<pb xml:id="p009r" n="9r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">9r</fw> men, he has reigned ever since amongst the <del type="cancelled">ten kin</del> <lb xml:id="l388"/>other horns with a peculiar soul &amp; a look more stout <lb xml:id="l389"/>then his fellows. And having rooted up <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">two of</add> the three kings in <lb xml:id="l390"/>favour of the worship of Images, he has changed times <lb xml:id="l391"/>&amp; laws, &amp; set up the abomination in the western Empire.</p>
<p xml:id="par30">His kingdom they call Peter's patrimony because given by <lb xml:id="l392"/>Charles the great to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Peter. And for the same reason <lb xml:id="l393"/>the keys of the cities of his kingdom they call <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Peter's <lb xml:id="l394"/>keys, they being offered to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Peter upon his Confession <lb xml:id="l395"/>or Altar. But some turning history into an Alle<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l396"/>gory tell us that the keys represent the power of binding <lb xml:id="l397"/>&amp; loosing &amp; are the keys of heaven &amp; that the three <lb xml:id="l398"/>crowns relate to heaven earth &amp; hell as if the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Pope</add> was <lb xml:id="l399"/>crowned king of those three regions. <del type="strikethrough">I need not stay to <lb xml:id="l400"/>confute such trifling</del> These are whimsies <del type="cancelled">&amp; I</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I need</add> not stay to con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l401"/>fute. <del type="cancelled">them.</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">Others come nearer the truth who tell us that the crowns denote the <choice><sic>Ponificial</sic><corr>Pontifical</corr></choice> Imperial &amp; Royal power of the Pope. For Peter's patrimony was taken partly from the Greek Emperor &amp; partly from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> king of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lombards.</add></p>
<p xml:id="par31">After Daniel had described the rise &amp; reign of the <lb xml:id="l402"/>fourth Beast &amp; of his horns, he proceeds to describe their fall <lb xml:id="l403"/>by a vision of God sitting in judgment in the Temple in <lb xml:id="l404"/>the most holy place in his throne above the Ark between <lb xml:id="l405"/>the Cherubims, Daniel standing before the Temple &amp; seing <lb xml:id="l406"/>this vision as it were through the flames of the Altar. <lb xml:id="l407"/><hi rend="underline">I beheld</hi>, saith he, <hi rend="underline">till the thrones were set &amp; the Ancient <lb xml:id="l408"/>of days did sit whose garment was white as snow &amp; the <lb xml:id="l409"/>hair of his head like pure wooll. His throne</hi> [seen through the fire] <hi rend="underline">was like <lb xml:id="l410"/>the fiery flames, &amp; his wheels</hi> [the wheels of his throne <lb xml:id="l411"/>as in the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">like</add> vision<del type="cancelled">s</del> of Ezekiel] <hi rend="underline">a burning fire. A fiery s<del type="over">r</del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>ream</hi> <lb xml:id="l412"/>[the flame of the Altar] <hi rend="underline">issued &amp; came forth from be<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l413"/>fore him &amp; thousand thousands</hi> [represented by the Che<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l414"/>rubims] <hi rend="underline">ministred unto him, &amp; ten thousand times ten thousand <lb xml:id="l415"/>stood before him</hi> [&amp; from his face the heaven &amp; earth <lb xml:id="l416"/>fled away.] <hi rend="underline">The judgment was set &amp; the books were opened <lb xml:id="l417"/>&amp; <del type="strikethrough">Daniel</del> <add place="inline" indicator="no">I</add> beheld till the</hi> [fourth] <hi rend="underline">Beast was slain &amp; his <lb xml:id="l418"/>body given to the burning flames</hi> [upon the Altar.] <hi rend="underline">And <lb xml:id="l419"/>one like the son of man</hi> [Michael the great Prince who <lb xml:id="l420"/>standeth for the children of Daniel's people, the word <lb xml:id="l421"/>of God &amp; king of kings with a two edged sword,] <hi rend="underline">came <lb xml:id="l422"/>in the clouds of heaven to the ancient of days &amp;</hi> [at the <lb xml:id="l423"/>sounding of the seventh Trumpet] <hi rend="underline">there was given him <lb xml:id="l424"/>dominion &amp; glory &amp; a kingdom that all people &amp; nations <lb xml:id="l425"/>&amp; languages should serve him</hi>.</p></div>

<p xml:id="par32">1 In the language of Prophesy <del type="strikethrough">Daniel tells us</del> Beasts are put for nations – – – – for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l428"/>years of the kingdoms.</p>
<p xml:id="par33">2. The four Monarchies are represented <choice><sic>in</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> <del type="strikethrough">three of Daniels</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by Daniel <del type="strikethrough">by three</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in four</add></add> visions, that of <lb xml:id="l429"/>the Image, that of the four Beasts &amp; that of the Ram &amp; He goat <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">besides the Prophesy of</del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">&amp; that of the Angel Gabriel telling Daniel what is written in</add> the scripture of truth.</add>. For the <lb xml:id="l430"/>reign of the <del type="cancelled">two</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">first</add> horn<del type="cancelled">s</del> of the Ram comprehends all the time<del type="cancelled">s</del> of the reign of <lb xml:id="l431"/>the <del type="strikethrough">two</del> first monarchies &amp; the <del type="cancelled">Gr</del> reign of the <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">six</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">last</add> horn<del type="cancelled">s</del> of the Goat comprehends <lb xml:id="l432"/>all the time of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign of the <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> last monarchy<add place="inline infralinear" indicator="no">, &amp; the Prophesy of the scripture of truth is a comment upon the Vision of the Ram &amp; He Goat.</add></p>

In expounding <del type="cancelled">the</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Nebuchadnezzars</add> vision of the Image Daniel tells us that the Golden head <lb xml:id="l433"/>the silver breast the brazen belly &amp; thighs &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> iron leggs signify four successive <lb xml:id="l434"/>kingdoms whereof the first is that of Babylon. <hi rend="underline">Thou o<gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/> king</hi>, saith he to Nebuchad<lb xml:id="l435"/>nezzar, <hi rend="underline">art king of Kings, for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom <lb xml:id="l436"/>power &amp; strength &amp; glory, &amp; wheresoever the children of men dwell, the <lb xml:id="l437"/>beasts of the field &amp; the fowls of the heaven</hi> <del type="strikethrough">hath</del> [that is, the kingdoms of <lb xml:id="l438"/>the world] <hi rend="underline">hath he given into thine hand &amp; hath made the ruler over <lb xml:id="l439"/>them all: Thou art this head of gold. And after thee</hi> [that is, after thy <lb xml:id="l440"/>kingdom] <hi rend="underline">shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee</hi> [the Persian] <hi rend="underline">&amp; another <lb xml:id="l441"/>third kingdom of brass</hi> [the Grecian] <hi rend="underline"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shall bear rule over all the earth &amp; <lb xml:id="l442"/>the fourth kingdom</hi> [the Romans] <hi rend="underline">shall be strong as iron, for as much as iron <lb xml:id="l443"/>breaketh in pieces &amp; subdueth all things. – And whereas thou sawest the feet &amp; toes <lb xml:id="l444"/>part of potters clay &amp; part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided, but there shall <lb xml:id="l445"/>be in it of the strength of iron – &amp; as the toes <del type="strikethrough">were</del> of the feet were</hi> <del type="strikethrough">partly strong</del> <lb xml:id="l446"/><hi rend="underline">part of iron &amp; part of clay so the kingdom shall be partly strong &amp; partly <choice><sic>broc</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice><lb xml:id="l447"/><del type="cancelled">ken</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">brittle:</add></hi> that <add place="inline" indicator="no">is</add> it shall be divided into many kingdoms <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; principalities</add> some of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shall be <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">firm &amp;</add> potent &amp; <lb xml:id="l448"/>some of them <del type="cancelled">fallen</del> infirm &amp; weak.</p>
<p xml:id="par35">4 In expounding his own vision of the four Beasts Daniel tells us that the <lb xml:id="l449"/>Lion the Bear the Leopard &amp; the dreadfull terrible &amp; exceedingly strong <lb xml:id="l450"/>ten horned Beast, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> arose successively out of the great sea are <hi rend="underline">four kingdoms <lb xml:id="l451"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shall arise out of the earth</hi>. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">And</add> All interpreters agree that these kingdoms <lb xml:id="l452"/>are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> those signified by the four parts of the <del type="cancelled">statue</del> Image: <lb xml:id="l453"/>the ten horns of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fourth Beast answering to the ten toes of the iron <lb xml:id="l454"/>leggs, &amp; the everlasting kingdome of the son of man <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> succeeds the four <lb xml:id="l455"/>&amp; is over all nations &amp; shall not pass away (Dan. 7 <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del>. 14) answering to the <lb xml:id="l456"/>stone <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> smote <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Image upon <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">its</add> feet &amp; brake it to pieces &amp; became <lb xml:id="l457"/>a great mountain, <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">mountain</add></del> <add place="inline" indicator="no">&amp;</add> filled the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">whole</add> earth, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> mountain</del></add> <add place="inline" indicator="no">&amp;</add> signifies a kingdom <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l458"/>God shall set up &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> shall <del type="strikethrough">consume &amp;</del> break in pieces <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; consume</add> the former kingdoms <lb xml:id="l459"/>&amp; not be left to other people but stand for ever. <p xml:id="par36">5 In <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">describing &amp;</add> expounding his vision of the <del type="over">r</del><add place="over" indicator="no">R</add>am &amp; He-Goat, he tells us that the <lb xml:id="l460"/><hi rend="underline">Ram had two horns &amp; the two horns were high <del type="strikethrough">&amp; the higher</del> but one was higher <lb xml:id="l461"/>then the other &amp; the higher came up last</hi> &amp; that the <hi rend="underline">Ram having two horns <lb xml:id="l462"/>are the kings of Media &amp; Persia</hi>, that is, the horn <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> came up first is the <lb xml:id="l463"/>kingdom of Media &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the</add> horn <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> came up last &amp; was higher then the other <lb xml:id="l464"/>is the kingdom of Persia. This kingdom of Persia is the second Monarchy &amp; <lb xml:id="l465"/>the kingdom of Media is contemporary to the first monarchy, &amp; therefore <lb xml:id="l466"/>the Ram in the reig<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del>n of his two horns comprehends all the times of the <lb xml:id="l467"/>two first monarchies. The kingdoms of <del type="cancelled">the</del> Babylonia &amp; Media arose <lb xml:id="l468"/>out <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of</add> the Assyrian <del type="strikethrough">Monarchy</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Empire</add> &amp; as colla<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">l</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>eral branches of <del type="strikethrough">Monarchy</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">that Empire</add> <lb xml:id="l469"/>may <del type="cancelled">be</del> either of them or both together <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">be</add> taken for the Empire <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> reigned <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">next</fw>

The Greeks &amp; Latins <lb xml:id="l471"/>accounted the Assyrian <del type="strikethrough">Monarchy</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Empire</add> the first, the Medic the second, the Persian <lb xml:id="l472"/>the third, the Grecian the fourth &amp; the Roman the fift, &amp; according to this <lb xml:id="l473"/>recconing, if with Daniel we omit the Assyrian, the four <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> Empires will <lb xml:id="l474"/>be the Medic, Persian, Grecian &amp; Roman. Daniel therefore puts the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">collateral</add> Empire <lb xml:id="l475"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Medes &amp; Babylonians indifferently in the first place. In the vision <lb xml:id="l476"/>of the Image he puts the Babylonian Empire in the first place saying to <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">Ne</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l477"/>Nebuchadnezzar <hi rend="underline">Thou art this head of gold</hi>. In the vision of the Ram <lb xml:id="l478"/>&amp; Goat he omitts the Empire of <del type="cancelled">the</del> Babylon &amp; puts the Empire of <lb xml:id="l479"/>the Medes in the first place saying <hi rend="underline">the Ram <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> two horns</hi> (one of <lb xml:id="l480"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> rose up before the other) <hi rend="underline">are the kings of Media &amp; Persia</hi>. <lb xml:id="l481"/>In the vision of the four Beasts he puts them both together <lb xml:id="l482"/>in the first place, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> representing them by the two <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">great</add> wings of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l483"/>Lyon <del type="strikethrough">wherewith it was lifted up from the earth &amp; made to stand <lb xml:id="l484"/>on the feet as a man.</del> like Eagles wings. For the wings of a <lb xml:id="l485"/>Beast <del type="cancelled">T</del> signify the kingdoms of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the Beast is composed <lb xml:id="l486"/>as is manifest by comparing the four wings of the Leopard <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l487"/>the four horns of the He Goat, both <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> signify the division of <lb xml:id="l488"/>the Greek <del type="cancelled">Empire</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Monarchy</add> into four kingdoms to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> four winds of <lb xml:id="l489"/>Heaven. <del type="cancelled">T</del></p>

<p xml:id="par37">The Greeks &amp; Latines recconed the great Empires of the world in this order: <lb xml:id="l490"/>the Assyrian, Medic, Persian, Grecian &amp; Roman. If with Daniel we<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> omit the Assyrian <lb xml:id="l491"/>the four great Empires will be the Medic, Persian Grecian &amp; Roman. The Medic &amp; <lb xml:id="l492"/>Babylonian rose together out of the Assyrian Empire &amp; were contemporary &amp; so <lb xml:id="l493"/><choice><sic>so</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> may either of them or both together be taken for the first <del type="cancelled">M</del> Empire. In the vision of the Ram &amp; He Goat Daniel reccons <del type="strikethrough">reccons</del> the Medic in the first <lb xml:id="l494"/>place &amp; the Persian in the second, putting the Goats two horns for those two empires. <lb xml:id="l495"/>In the vision of the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">metallic</add> Image Daniel puts the Babylonian in the first place <del type="cancelled">&amp; th</del> <lb xml:id="l496"/>saying to Nebuchadnezzar, <hi rend="underline">Thou art this head of <del type="over">G</del><add place="over" indicator="no">g</add>old</hi>. In the vision of the four <lb xml:id="l497"/>Beasts Daniel<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">s</unclear></del> seems to represent both together by the <del type="cancelled">Lion</del> first Beast with eagles <lb xml:id="l498"/>wings. For the wings of a Beast <gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/> represent the kingdoms of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the Beast is com<lb xml:id="l499"/>posed as is manifest by the four wings of the Leopard. <hi rend="underline">The first Beast</hi>, saith Daniel <lb xml:id="l500"/><hi rend="underline">was like a Lion</hi> (magnanimous &amp; strong) <hi rend="underline">&amp; had eagles wi<del type="over">g</del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>gs</hi>, streatching out its <lb xml:id="l501"/>power over two large kingdoms the <del type="cancelled">M</del> Babylonian &amp; the Medic. <hi rend="underline">And <del type="cancelled">to repre</del> I beheld</hi> <lb xml:id="l502"/>saith Daniel, <hi rend="underline">till the wings thereof were pluckt</hi>, that is, till its dominion was taken <lb xml:id="l503"/>away, &amp; <del type="cancelled">it wa</del> when its dominion was <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">taken away it was</add> not slain but <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">only</add> fell down from that exalted <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <lb xml:id="l504"/>state in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> its kings were worshipped as Gods, <hi rend="underline">&amp; it was lifted up</hi> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">[before]</add> <hi rend="underline">&amp; made to stand <lb xml:id="l505"/> on its</hi> [hinder] <hi rend="underline">feet as a man &amp; a mans heart was given unto it</hi>.</p>

<p xml:id="par38">For <del type="cancelled">if</del> the power by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the king of fierce countenance is mighty <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">being not his own power</add> must be <del type="strikethrough">a <lb xml:id="l506"/>greater power then his own, &amp;</del> a power forreign to <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">himself that is</add> the Greeks, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; <del type="cancelled">a</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">this power must be a</add> greater power then his own</add> &amp; so can be only <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l507"/>power of the Romans <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">while they reigned</del></add>. For if it <del type="strikethrough">was</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">had been</add> any power of the Greeks it would have been <lb xml:id="l508"/>one of the Goats horns &amp; <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">one of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the greatest of al</add> after the <del type="cancelled">king</del> time of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> kingdom of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> four <lb xml:id="l509"/>horns he would have had two horns one</del> this horn would have been <lb xml:id="l510"/>then the little horn <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">came up last &amp;</add> waxed exceeding great <del type="cancelled">whereas the Goat <unclear reason="del" cert="low">of</unclear> has <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/></del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">whereas this little horn grows the greatest of all the Goats horns &amp; is his only horn <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">a</unclear></del></add> <lb xml:id="l511"/>So then the Goat in the reign of his last horn was great by a forreign power &amp; <add place="lineEnd p012r" indicator="no"><choice><sic>therrefore</sic><corr>therefore</corr></choice> reigned under such a power.</add> <lb xml:id="l512"/><del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled">G</del> He</add> signifies the same <del type="cancelled">thing</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled">Empir</del> thing</add> with the Leopard. In the reign of his first horns <lb xml:id="l513"/>he is the Leopard reigning by his own power: In the reign of his last horn he <lb xml:id="l514"/>is the Leopard reigning by another's power <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in this last reign he</add> comprehends all the time<del type="cancelled">s</del> that the <lb xml:id="l515"/>life of the Leopard reigning is prolonged after <del type="cancelled">the</del> his proper dominion is taken away, that <lb xml:id="l516"/>is all the time of the fourth Empire untill a stone cut out <del type="cancelled">of <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">one</unclear></del> without hands <lb xml:id="l517"/>falls upon the feet of the Image &amp; breaks in pieces at once all the four parts <lb xml:id="l518"/>of the Image. And <del type="cancelled">there</del> <choice><sic>thefore</sic><corr>therefore</corr></choice> its said that the vision <del type="strikethrough">of this</del> is at the time of <lb xml:id="l519"/>the end &amp; in the last end of the indignation Dan. VIII.17, 19, that is, it reaches to <lb xml:id="l520"/>the end of all Daniels visions &amp; to the last end of the Iewish captivity. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">It reaches to the end of 2300 days &amp; days in all Daniels prophesies signify years</add> // The last <lb xml:id="l521"/>horn of the Goat is described <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">great above all the former horns,</add> exceeding great<del type="cancelled">, great up</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">sod</unclear><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> in breadth</add> by conquering eastward <choice><sic>ward</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <lb xml:id="l522"/>&amp; southward, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; in height</del></add> great up to the host of <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">gr</unclear></del> heaven<del type="strikethrough">, great above all the former <lb xml:id="l523"/>horns</del> &amp; therefore can signify nothing less then the mighty power of the <lb xml:id="l524"/>Greeks under the admi<gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/>nistration of the Romans, this being the only power <lb xml:id="l525"/>in the world that <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">has hitherto <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> been</add> greater then the power <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled">of the Greeks in the reign</del></add> of Alexander the great. [For where <lb xml:id="l526"/>the parts of prophesy are not adapted to the parts of history in due proportion the <lb xml:id="l527"/>interpretation is frivolous &amp; trifling.]</p>

<p xml:id="par41">As a Beast may continue after its dominion is so may a horn. For <lb xml:id="l528"/>the Rams <del type="strikethrough">two</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">first</add> horn<del type="cancelled">s</del> continued upon his head <del type="strikethrough">till the Goat brake them both &amp; yet / For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ram had two horns under one Monarch till he notwithstand<lb xml:id="l529"/>ing that</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">both his horns</del></add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">after</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Medes were conquered by the Persians. And tho the Persian Empire <lb xml:id="l530"/>had but one Monarch yet the Ram had two horns till he was vanquished by <lb xml:id="l531"/>the Goat. And in like manner we are to <choice><sic>conceiv</sic><corr>conceive</corr></choice> that the Goat has <lb xml:id="l532"/>four horns till the end of the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">reign of the Leopard or</add> third monarchy notwithstanding any conquests <lb xml:id="l533"/>that the horns may make upon one another. <del type="strikethrough">Now</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled">For</del> And when</add> Daniel tells us that <lb xml:id="l534"/>in the <del type="strikethrough">latter time</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">end</add> of their kingdom when the transgressors are come <lb xml:id="l535"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> full a king of fierce countenance shall stand up: <del type="strikethrough">&amp; the latter time <lb xml:id="l536"/>of their kingdom is the latter time of the kingdom of the <del type="cancelled">Goat</del> Leopard with four</del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">we are to understand <del type="strikethrough">that in the end of the third <del type="cancelled">Monarchy</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Empire</add> this king stands up &amp; there</del></add> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight"><choice><sic>heads</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice></fw>

The kingdom of the four horns is not perpetual but <lb xml:id="l537"/>comes to an end &amp; when it is expiring the king of fierce countenance stands <lb xml:id="l538"/>up</del> that this king <del type="strikethrough">begins bec</del> stands up in the end of th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">third</add> Empire &amp; beginning <lb xml:id="l539"/>of the fourth. But these things will be best understood by comparing them <lb xml:id="l540"/>with the prophesy of the scripture of truth <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is a commentary upon <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the vision of the Ram &amp; He Goat</add> <lb xml:id="l541"/>For there Daniel describes the breaking of the Greek monarchy into <lb xml:id="l542"/>four great kingdoms <del type="strikethrough">&amp; tells the actions of two</del> to the four winds of heaven <lb xml:id="l543"/>&amp; tells the actions of the kings of the north &amp; south <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are two of <lb xml:id="l544"/>the four, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp;</add> prosecut<del type="cancelled">ing</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">es</add> their history down to the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">eighth year of the</add> reign of Antiochus <lb xml:id="l545"/>Epiphanes, the year in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Antiochus <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">came <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">east</add> out of Egypt &amp;</add> set up the religion of the heathens <lb xml:id="l546"/>in the Temple &amp; in all Iudæa, &amp; there Daniel <add place="interlinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> concludes the history of the kings of the north &amp; south with these words: For the ships of Chittim . . . . forsake the holy <choice><sic>covent</sic><corr>covenant</corr></choice>. There Daniel breaks off &amp; in the next words passes to the Romans reigning over the Greeks.</add> <choice><sic>breaks off &amp; passes to the <lb xml:id="l547"/>Romans</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> saying, <hi rend="underline">And after him arms shall stand up</hi>. For in this very <lb xml:id="l548"/>year the Romans <del type="strikethrough">assisted by the king of Pergamus</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp; king of Pergamus</add> conquered the kingd<choice><orig>ō</orig><reg>om</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l549"/>of Macedon <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">is</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">being</add> the mother kingdom of the Greek<add place="supralinear" indicator="no">s</add> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">Empire</unclear></del>, the fall <lb xml:id="l550"/>thereof may be recconed to put an end to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Greek Empire &amp; give a beginning <lb xml:id="l551"/>to the Roman. ‡</p>

<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par46">3 Daniel <tei:del type="cancelled">had</tei:del> in this prophesy of the scripture of truth had <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">upon less occasions</tei:add> mentioned <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Romans twice before. <tei:lb xml:id="l571"/>He mentions their war against Antiochus the great &amp; in this very year he mentions their embassy against <tei:lb xml:id="l572"/>Antiochus Epiphanes in Egypt. And can we think that he would make no mention of their con<tei:lb xml:id="l573"/>quering <tei:del type="strikethrough">all the kingdoms of</tei:del> the Greeks? <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; extending their dominion <tei:choice><tei:sic>ove</tei:sic><tei:corr>over</tei:corr></tei:choice> all the east &amp;</tei:add> And yet he mentions it not unless in these short words <tei:lb xml:id="l574"/><tei:hi rend="underline">And after him arms shall stand up</tei:hi>. <tei:del type="strikethrough">They stood up therefore by conquerin They stood up <tei:lb xml:id="l575"/>therefore by conquering <tei:del type="cancelled">for <tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></tei:del> the Greeks</tei:del> Arms in this prophesy are every where used for <tei:lb xml:id="l576"/><tei:choice><tei:sic>for</tei:sic><tei:corr type="noText"/></tei:choice> the military power of a kingdom. Standing up is growing great &amp; powerfull by conquest <tei:lb xml:id="l577"/>And Daniel is here <tei:del type="strikethrough">speaking</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><tei:del type="strikethrough">describing the affairs</tei:del></tei:add> <tei:add place="infralinear" indicator="no">speaking</tei:add> of the kingdom of the Greeks or third Monarchy &amp; had brought <tei:lb xml:id="l578"/>the description of the affairs of this kingdom to a period. <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp; the</tei:del> And therefore <tei:del type="cancelled">after</tei:del> by saying that <tei:lb xml:id="l579"/><tei:hi rend="underline">after him arms shall stand up</tei:hi> he mean<tei:del type="over">t</tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">s</tei:add> that <tei:del type="cancelled">after the reign of <tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><tei:del type="strikethrough">from thence forward</tei:del></tei:add> a new dominion should <tei:lb xml:id="l580"/>stand up <tei:del type="cancelled">with</tei:del> over the nations of the Greeks <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/> that</tei:del> by conquest. He tells us afterwards that <tei:lb xml:id="l581"/>it should <tei:hi rend="underline">be for a time times &amp; half a time</tei:hi>. This is a period of the fourth Empire: &amp; these <tei:lb xml:id="l582"/>Daniel <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in this prophesy</tei:add> had been describing the <tei:del type="strikethrough">affairs of that Empire</tei:del> rise &amp; reign of that Empire, &amp; might <tei:lb xml:id="l583"/>comprehended its rise in the<tei:del type="cancelled">se</tei:del> words: <tei:hi rend="underline">and after him arms shall stand up.</tei:hi></tei:p>
<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par47"><tei:add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">When</tei:add> These arms <tei:del type="strikethrough">take</tei:del> stand up they take away the daily sacrifice &amp; so doth the little horn <tei:lb xml:id="l584"/>of the Goat <tei:del type="strikethrough">when it grows <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></tei:del></tei:del> after it is grown great, &amp; therefore they are the same.</tei:p><tei:anchor xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="addend012v-01"/>
<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par48"><tei:del type="blockStrikethrough">The Bear <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> is the second Beast or Persian Empire <tei:lb xml:id="l585"/>raised himself up or stood up on one side to signify that <tei:lb xml:id="l586"/><tei:del type="strikethrough">the rise of the Persians</tei:del> this Empire began with the rise <tei:lb xml:id="l587"/>of the Persians above the Medes. He held three <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del> ribs in <tei:lb xml:id="l588"/>his mouth to signify his conquests. The ribs are the strong cities of <tei:lb xml:id="l589"/>the three kingdoms of Sardes Babylon &amp; Egypt. <tei:del type="strikethrough">He is bid to rise</tei:del> <tei:lb xml:id="l590"/>He held them in his mouth between his teeth as if he was <tei:lb xml:id="l591"/>eating them to signify that are the cities of three conquered <tei:lb xml:id="l592"/>nations distinct from his own original body. He is bid to rise <tei:lb xml:id="l593"/>&amp; eat much flesh that is to eat the flesh upon the ribs, or <tei:lb xml:id="l594"/>to draw much riches from his conquests. For the Medes <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; Persians</tei:add> were <tei:lb xml:id="l595"/>poor &amp; fared hardly &amp; wore leather garments before they con<tei:lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l596"/>quered Sardes Babylon – &amp; Egypt, but afterwards <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">grew very rich &amp;</tei:add> by their riches stirred <tei:lb xml:id="l597"/>up all against the realm of Greece.</tei:del></tei:p>
<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par49"><tei:del type="blockStrikethrough">The Leopard <tei:del type="strikethrough">by h</tei:del> <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> is the third <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Beast or Greek</tei:add> <tei:del type="strikethrough">Monarchy</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Empire</tei:add>, by his four <tei:lb xml:id="l598"/>heads &amp; four wings denotes</tei:del></tei:p>
<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par50">6 Daniel tells us further that the <tei:hi rend="underline">rough Goat is the king of <tei:lb xml:id="l599"/>Greece</tei:hi> (that is the kingdom) <tei:hi rend="underline">&amp; had a notable horn between his eyes <tei:lb xml:id="l600"/>&amp; smote</tei:hi> – <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp; smote</tei:del> Sandracottus in India.</tei:p>
<tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par51">7 Daniel sayth further that <tei:hi rend="underline">out of one of the four horns <tei:lb xml:id="l601"/>came <tei:choice><tei:sic>fourth</tei:sic><tei:corr>forth</tei:corr></tei:choice> a little horn <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> waxed exceeding great toward the <tei:lb xml:id="l602"/>south &amp; toward the east &amp; toward the pleasant land. And it waxed <tei:lb xml:id="l603"/>great even <tei:del type="strikethrough">against</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">to</tei:add> the <tei:del type="strikethrough">Prince</tei:del> host of heaven &amp; it cast down <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">some</tei:add> of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l604"/>host &amp; of the stars to <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> grownd Ye he magnified himself to the Prince <tei:lb xml:id="l605"/>of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> host &amp; by him the dayly sacrifice was taken away &amp; the place <tei:lb xml:id="l606"/>of his sanctuary was cast down</tei:hi> <tei:add place="supralinear marginRight" indicator="yes">and an host was given him against the daily sacrifice <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp; <tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></tei:del> <tei:del type="strikethrough">by reason of</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in</tei:add> transgression <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">[of desolation]</tei:add> &amp; it cast down the truth to the grownd &amp; it <tei:unclear reason="hand" cert="high">practiced</tei:unclear> &amp; prospered</tei:add> &amp;c And in the interpretation of this <tei:lb xml:id="l607"/><tei:del type="cancelled">p<tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></tei:del> vision he saith that <tei:hi rend="underline">in the latter time of their kingdom</tei:hi> [the kingdom of <tei:lb xml:id="l608"/>the four horns] <tei:hi rend="underline">when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce</tei:hi> <tei:fw type="catch" place="bottomRight"><tei:hi rend="underline">countenance</tei:hi></tei:fw></tei:p>

<tei:p xml:id="par52"><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">The pro</tei:supplied>phesy of the scripture of truth is a commentary upon the <tei:lb xml:id="l610"/><tei:supplied resp="#in">Ram &amp; t</tei:supplied>he vision of the Ram &amp; He-Goat<tei:add place="inline" indicator="no">,</tei:add> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><tei:del type="strikethrough">&amp; in this vision</tei:del></tei:add> <tei:del type="over">,</tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</tei:add> Daniel comprehends <tei:lb xml:id="l611"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">the times</tei:supplied> of the two first Monarchies in the Ram &amp; the times <tei:lb xml:id="l612"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">of the</tei:supplied> two last in the Goat. For he tells us that <tei:hi rend="underline">the Ram had <tei:lb xml:id="l613"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">two horns</tei:supplied> &amp; <tei:del type="cancelled">that</tei:del> the two horns were high but one was higher <tei:lb xml:id="l614"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">then</tei:supplied> the other &amp; the higher came up last</tei:hi> &amp; that the <tei:hi rend="underline">Ram <tei:lb xml:id="l615"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">havi</tei:supplied>ng two horns are the kings of Media &amp; Persia</tei:hi>, that is, the <tei:lb xml:id="l616"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">ho</tei:supplied>rn <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> came up first is the kingdom of Media, &amp; the horn <tei:lb xml:id="l617"/><tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> came up last is the kingdom of Persia. The kingdom of <tei:lb xml:id="l618"/>Persia is the second Empire &amp; the kingdom of <tei:del type="over">Per</tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">Me</tei:add>dia <tei:del type="cancelled">is</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">was</tei:add> contempo<tei:lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l619"/>rary to the <tei:del type="strikethrough"><tei:del type="cancelled">first</tei:del> kingdom of Babylon <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> was the <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or golden</tei:add> head of the <tei:lb xml:id="l620"/>Image, &amp; was one of the win</tei:del> first. And as the Ram in the reign<tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:unclear reason="del" cert="high">s</tei:unclear></tei:del> <tei:lb xml:id="l621"/>of his first horn<tei:del type="cancelled">s</tei:del> comprehends the times of the <tei:del type="cancelled">two</tei:del> first Empire<tei:del type="cancelled">s</tei:del> &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l622"/>in the reign of his second horn is the second Empire so the Goa<tei:del type="over">d</tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">t</tei:add> <tei:lb xml:id="l623"/>in the reign of his first horns is the third Empire &amp; in the reign <tei:lb xml:id="l624"/>of his last horn comprehends the times of the fourth.</tei:p>
<tei:p xml:id="par53">For Daniel tells us that the <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del> Goat <tei:hi rend="underline">had a notable horn bet<tei:lb xml:id="l625"/>ween his eyes &amp; waxed very great &amp; when he was strong the great <tei:lb xml:id="l626"/>horn was broken &amp; for it came up four notable ones towards the <tei:lb xml:id="l627"/>four winds <tei:del type="strikethrough">towards the four winds</tei:del> of heaven</tei:hi>. And in explaining <tei:lb xml:id="l628"/>this he saith that <tei:hi rend="underline">the rough Goat is the king of Greece &amp; the <tei:lb xml:id="l629"/>great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. Now that <tei:lb xml:id="l630"/>being broken, whereas four stood up for it four kingdoms shall stand <tei:lb xml:id="l631"/>up out of the nation, but not in his power</tei:hi>. In all this Prophesy Dani<tei:lb xml:id="l632"/>els kings are kingdoms. The kings of Media &amp; Persia are the king<tei:lb xml:id="l633"/>doms of Media &amp; Persia &amp; the king of Greece is the kingdom of Greece <tei:lb xml:id="l634"/>&amp; the first king is the first kingdom. It is not the person of Alex<tei:lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l635"/>ander the great but his kingdom <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><tei:del type="strikethrough">while it continued</tei:del> in a monarchical form <tei:del type="strikethrough">that is</tei:del></tei:add> during his own reign &amp; the reign <tei:lb xml:id="l636"/>of his brother Aridæus &amp; son Alexander. For <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><tei:del type="cancelled">when</tei:del></tei:add> this king was succeeded <tei:lb xml:id="l637"/>by four kingdoms &amp; kingdoms did not come up in the room of Alex<tei:lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l638"/>anders person but in the room of his kingdom. Now <tei:del type="cancelled">when</tei:del> by all <tei:lb xml:id="l639"/>this it's manifest that the Goat in the rei<tei:del type="over">d</tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">g</tei:add>n of these horns is <tei:lb xml:id="l640"/>the Greek Empire or third Monarchy represented by the Leopard, <tei:lb xml:id="l641"/>the four horns of the Goat &amp; the four heads <tei:del type="cancelled">of the</tei:del> &amp; four <tei:lb xml:id="l642"/>wings of the Leopard signifying one &amp; the same thing.</tei:p>

<tei:p xml:id="par55"><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">Now since <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Goat</tei:supplied> in the reign of his last horn was <tei:del type="strikethrough">great</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">mighty</tei:add> <tei:lb xml:id="l664"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">but not by his own po</tei:supplied>wer &amp; therefore reigned under <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></tei:del> such a power <tei:lb xml:id="l665"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">he</tei:supplied> signifies the same thing with the Leopard: In the <tei:lb xml:id="l666"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" cert="high">reig</tei:supplied>n of his first horn he is the Leopard reigning by his <tei:lb xml:id="l667"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">ow</tei:supplied>n power: In the reign of his last horn he is the Leopard <tei:lb xml:id="l668"/><tei:supplied reason="damage" resp="#in">re</tei:supplied>igning by anothers power &amp; by consequence compre<tei:lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l669"/>hends all the time <tei:del type="strikethrough">that</tei:del><tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in which</tei:add> the life of the Leopard is prolonged <tei:lb xml:id="l670"/>after his proper dominion is taken away, that is all the <tei:lb xml:id="l671"/>time of the fourth Empire untill a stone cut out <tei:del type="cancelled">of</tei:del> <tei:lb xml:id="l672"/>without hands falls upon the feet of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Image &amp; breakes <tei:lb xml:id="l673"/>the whole in pieces at once. And therefore its said that the <tei:lb xml:id="l674"/>vision is at the time of the end &amp; in the last end of the in<tei:lb xml:id="l675"/>dignation (Dan. VIII.17, 19,) that is, it reaches to the end of all <tei:lb xml:id="l676"/>Daniels visions <tei:del type="cancelled">at once</tei:del> &amp; to the last end of the Iewish capti<tei:lb xml:id="l677"/>vity. // It reaches to the end of <tei:del type="cancelled">the</tei:del> 2300 days &amp; in all Daniels <tei:lb xml:id="l678"/>prophesies days are put for years. The Iews kept no account <tei:lb xml:id="l679"/>of time <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by days</tei:add> longer then a month. They counted the age of <tei:lb xml:id="l680"/>the Moon or days of the month, &amp; the months or Moons in <tei:lb xml:id="l681"/>a year, but their months &amp; years consisted of no certain <tei:lb xml:id="l682"/>number of days; &amp; for Daniel to tell the Iews of an <tei:lb xml:id="l683"/>exact period of 2300 natural days when they had no <tei:lb xml:id="l684"/>method in use of counting that number nor could deter<tei:lb xml:id="l685"/>min by their years &amp; months the number of days in <tei:lb xml:id="l686"/>any period of time past, would have been very improper <tei:lb xml:id="l687"/>&amp; therefore days in <tei:del type="cancelled">all</tei:del> this prophesy as well as in all <tei:lb xml:id="l688"/>the rest of Daniels prophesies <tei:del type="cancelled">must signify years</tei:del> are <tei:lb xml:id="l689"/>types of years, &amp; 2300 years are not yet expired.</tei:p>
<tei:p xml:id="par56">The last horn of the Goat is described great above <tei:lb xml:id="l690"/>all the former horns, exceeding great in length &amp; breadth <tei:lb xml:id="l691"/><tei:del type="strikethrough">by conquering</tei:del> eastward &amp; southward, <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp;</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp;</tei:add> great <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in height</tei:add> up to the host <tei:lb xml:id="l692"/>of heaven: and therefore can signify nothing less then <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l693"/>mighty power of the Greeks under the administration of the <tei:lb xml:id="l694"/>Romans, this being the only power in the world that has hitherto <tei:lb xml:id="l695"/>been greater then the power of Alexander the great.</tei:p>
<tei:p xml:id="par57">The little horn of the Goat is by some taken for Antiochus <tei:lb xml:id="l696"/>Epiphanes but very injudiciously. A horn of a Beast is never taken <tei:lb xml:id="l697"/>for a single person. A new horn always signifies a new kingdom <tei:lb xml:id="l698"/>&amp; the kingdom of Antiochus was an old one. Antiochus reigned over <tei:lb xml:id="l699"/>one of the four horns, &amp; the little horn was a fift under its <tei:fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">proper</tei:fw></tei:p>

In this vision of the four Beasts Daniel describes <tei:lb xml:id="l703"/>only the reign of the Leopard by his own power <tei:gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/> &amp; tells you that after his dominion <tei:lb xml:id="l704"/>is taken away his life should be prolonged: here <tei:del type="strikethrough">he repeats</tei:del> in <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> vision <tei:choice><tei:sic>the</tei:sic><tei:corr>of the</tei:corr></tei:choice> Goat he first <tei:lb xml:id="l705"/>repeats the reign of the Leopard by his own power <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp; then</tei:del> untill the end of the <tei:lb xml:id="l706"/>kingdom of the four horns <tei:del type="strikethrough">&amp; then by a new ho</tei:del> of the Goat &amp; then under the type <tei:lb xml:id="l707"/>of the Goat reigning in a new horn he describes the life &amp; actions of the Leopard <tei:lb xml:id="l708"/>after his dominion is taken away &amp; <tei:del type="strikethrough"><tei:del type="cancelled">tells you</tei:del> to make you understand that the Goat <tei:lb xml:id="l709"/>in the<tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></tei:del> reign of this horn represents the horn great above a</tei:del> tells you that his power should <tei:lb xml:id="l710"/>be mighty but not by his own power. <tei:del type="cancelled">And to re</tei:del> He represents this horn great above <tei:lb xml:id="l711"/>all the former horns, exceeding great in <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:unclear reason="del" cert="medium">len</tei:unclear></tei:del> breadth eastward &amp; southward, <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp;</tei:add> great in <tei:lb xml:id="l712"/>height up to the host or stars of heaven <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">but not by his own power.</tei:add>, &amp; this can signify nothing less then the mighty <tei:lb xml:id="l713"/>power of the Greeks <tei:del type="strikethrough">under th</tei:del> by &amp; under the <tei:del type="strikethrough">power</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">administration</tei:add> of the Romans, this being the only <tei:lb xml:id="l714"/>– – – Alexander the great. For the nations of <tei:lb xml:id="l722"/>the Greeks <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in Europe Asia Syria &amp; Egypt</tei:add> are still mighty but not by their own power. They were formerly mighty <tei:lb xml:id="l723"/>by the power of the Romans &amp; they are now mighty by the power of the Turks &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l724"/>Daniel tells us that the vision of the Goat reigning in his last horn is at the time of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l725"/>end &amp; in the last end of the Indignation <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Dan VIII.17, 19)</tei:add>, that is it reaches to <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> end of all Daniels <tei:lb xml:id="l726"/>visions &amp; to the last end of the Iewish captivity.</tei:p>

<tei:p xml:id="par60">The character of the little horn answers much better to the kingdom of <tei:lb xml:id="l727"/>Pergamus then to Antiochus Epiphanes. For this was a new kingdom <tei:choice><tei:sic>differen</tei:sic><tei:corr>different</tei:corr></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l728"/>from the four. It <tei:del type="strikethrough">was at first <tei:del type="cancelled">a <tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></tei:del> only</tei:del> came out of the western side of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l729"/>king of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> north</tei:p>

And in expounding this vision he tells that in the <tei:del type="strikethrough">latter</tei:del> end <tei:lb xml:id="l743"/>of the kingdom of the four <tei:del type="strikethrough">kings represented</tei:del> horns <tei:del type="cancelled">a <tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></tei:del> when the transgressors are come <tei:lb xml:id="l744"/>to the full, a king of fierce countenance should stand up <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; be mighty but not by his own power</tei:add>, that is, the <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">little horn</tei:add> should then <tei:lb xml:id="l745"/>stand up over the nations of the Greeks <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><tei:del type="strikethrough">&amp; become exceeding great</tei:del></tei:add> by conquering southward &amp; eastward, &amp; thereby <tei:lb xml:id="l746"/>become exceeding great <tei:add place="inline" indicator="no">but</tei:add> <tei:del type="strikethrough">And by all this</tei:del> not by his own power. And by all this I conclude <tei:lb xml:id="l747"/>that the little horn is the kingdom of Pergamus. For <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">that</tei:add> kingdom arose on <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> western side of <tei:lb xml:id="l748"/>the northern horn. It was at first only a castle <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">th</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>with</tei:expan></tei:choice> a small district <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in the western border of Asia minor</tei:add>. By degrees it increased <tei:lb xml:id="l749"/>in power &amp; at length took from the kingdom of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> north <tei:del type="cancelled">all</tei:del> allmost all Asia on this side <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l750"/>mountain Taurus &amp; beating also the Gauls to whom it had been tributary the governor of <tei:del type="cancelled">the <tei:lb xml:id="l751"/>castle</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Pergamus</tei:add> was saluted king by his army. Thus it grew <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by the side &amp;</tei:add> out of the substance of the Northern <tei:lb xml:id="l752"/>horn <tei:del type="strikethrough">&amp; became</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in form of</tei:add> a little horn. Afterwards it lost part of its <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">territories</tei:add> to Antiochus the great but <tei:lb xml:id="l753"/>recovered all again by the assistance of the Romans. And continuing in strickt league with <tei:lb xml:id="l754"/>the Romans it assisted them in conquering the kingdom of Macedon <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><tei:foreign xml:lang="lat">an Philip<tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del> 156 An. Sam. 933</tei:foreign></tei:add> [<tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> was one of the <tei:lb xml:id="l755"/>four horns, <tei:del type="strikethrough">&amp; the root &amp; fountain of the rest, <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp; go</tei:del> &amp; at the same time</tei:del> [&amp; in the same <tei:lb xml:id="l756"/>year the transgressors <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> holy covenant</tei:add> conspired with <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Greeks to set up the abomination in the Temple &amp; cities of <tei:lb xml:id="l757"/>Iudea. <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">This was <tei:foreign xml:lang="lat"><tei:del type="strikethrough">An. Sam. 933</tei:foreign></tei:add> Then the kingdom of Pergamus <tei:del type="cancelled">by the</tei:del> <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> had hitherto been a little horn, was by the <tei:lb xml:id="l758"/>last will &amp; testament <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of its last king Attalus <tei:foreign xml:lang="lat">an. Sam. 969</tei:foreign></tei:add> &amp; <tei:del type="strikethrough">thereby</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">thereby <tei:del type="cancelled"><tei:unclear reason="del" cert="low">made</tei:unclear></tei:del></tei:add> became a king of fierce countenance <tei:lb xml:id="l759"/>It was not conquered &amp; broken <tei:del type="cancelled">off</tei:del> in pieces but continued in the<tei:del type="cancelled">ir</tei:del> hands <tei:del type="cancelled">&amp; <tei:unclear reason="del" cert="low">made</tei:unclear></tei:del> as a gift <tei:lb xml:id="l760"/>The<tei:del type="cancelled">y</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Romans</tei:add> succeeded Attalus in the throne of this kingdom <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by a legal right</tei:add> &amp; reigned over it in the room of <tei:lb xml:id="l761"/><tei:gap reason="foxed" unit="chars" extent="2"/> kings &amp; by their administration it became a king <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or kingdom</tei:add> of fierce countenance. Then <tei:lb xml:id="l762"/>it conquered the kingdom of Syria, <tei:foreign xml:lang="lat">An. <tei:del type="cancelled">An</tei:del> Sam. 1037</tei:foreign> &amp; the kingdom of Iudea <tei:del type="strikethrough"><tei:foreign xml:lang="lat">an. Sam. <tei:gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:foreign></tei:del> <tei:lb xml:id="l763"/>the next year &amp; the kingdom of Egypt <tei:foreign xml:lang="lat">An. Sam. 1071</tei:foreign> &amp; by conquering those three kingdoms <tei:lb xml:id="l764"/><tei:del type="strikethrough">became exceeding great</tei:del> <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">it</tei:add> stood up &amp; became exceeding great towards the south &amp; towards the <tei:lb xml:id="l765"/>east &amp; towards the pleasant land, but not by its own power.</tei:p>

<tei:p xml:id="par63">After this the little horn grew up to the host of heaven &amp; cast down of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l766"/><tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">host &amp;</tei:add> stars to <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> grownd. Then it magnified it self to <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Prince of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> host &amp; took away <tei:lb xml:id="l767"/>the dayly worship. But for understanding these things its necessary to compare this vision <tei:lb xml:id="l768"/>of the Ram &amp; Goat with the Prophesy of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Scripture of <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><tei:del type="strikethrough"><tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice></tei:del></tei:add> truth. For they both <tei:lb xml:id="l769"/>concern the nations of the Greek Empire reigning first by their <tei:choice><tei:sic>ow</tei:sic><tei:corr>own</tei:corr></tei:choice> power &amp; then <tei:lb xml:id="l770"/>by the power of others till the end of the four Monarchies, <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; the last is a commentary upon the first</tei:add> <tei:del type="blockStrikethrough"><tei:del type="strikethrough">And being</tei:del> <tei:lb xml:id="l771"/>about one &amp; the subject, they must be compared together before either of them can be well understood.</tei:del></tei:p>
<tei:p xml:id="par64">In <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> prophesy of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> scripture of truth Daniel tells us how <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> <tei:lb xml:id="l772"/>first Monarchy of the Greeks should be broken into four great kingdoms to <tei:lb xml:id="l773"/>the four winds of heaven, &amp; then describes the history of the kings or king<tei:lb xml:id="l774"/>doms of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> north &amp; south <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> are two of the four &amp; prosecutes the descri<tei:lb xml:id="l775"/>ption down to <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> 8<tei:hi rend="superscript">th</tei:hi> year of Antiochus Epiphanes &amp; there breaks of &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l776"/>passes to the description of the little horn or king of fierce countenance in <tei:lb xml:id="l777"/>these words, <tei:hi rend="underline">And arms out of him shall stand <tei:lb xml:id="l778"/>up</tei:hi>. Arms are every where in this prophesy put <tei:lb xml:id="l779"/>for the military force of a kingdom &amp; sett<tei:lb xml:id="l780"/>ing up is put for <tei:del type="strikethrough">grow</tei:del> making war &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l781"/>growing great &amp; powerfull by conquest <tei:lb xml:id="l782"/>&amp; here it <tei:del type="cancelled">g</tei:del> signifies standing up <tei:unclear reason="copy" cert="medium">over</tei:unclear> the kingdoms of the north &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l783"/>south of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> Daniel had been <tei:lb xml:id="l784"/>hitherto speaking. <tei:unclear reason="copy" cert="high">Arms</tei:unclear> <tei:lb xml:id="l785"/>shall stand up &amp; a king of <tei:lb xml:id="l786"/>fierce countenance shall stand up are <tei:lb xml:id="l787"/>phrases of the same signification &amp; they <tei:lb xml:id="l788"/>stand up over the kingdoms of the north &amp; <tei:lb xml:id="l789"/>south or Syria &amp; Egypt when the <tei:del type="cancelled">kingd</tei:del> little <tei:lb xml:id="l790"/>horn waxes exceeding great towards the south &amp; towards <tei:lb xml:id="l791"/>the east. <tei:hi rend="underline">Arms out of him shall stand up</tei:hi>, that is <tei:lb xml:id="l792"/>out of <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the substance of</tei:add> his kingdom. <tei:del type="strikethrough"><tei:gap reason="blotDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/> by com</tei:del> As the little horn <tei:lb xml:id="l793"/>grew out of the northern <tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">horn</tei:add> by converting the <tei:lb xml:id="l794"/>substance of <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> horn into its own sub–</tei:p>
