<p xml:id="par1">This Chronology depends principally upon <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the history of the Iews delivered in</add> the books of Ezra &amp; <del type="over">h</del><add indicator="no" place="over">N</add>ehe<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l2"/>miah. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> And this history consists of these parts: the return of the Iews <lb xml:id="l3"/>from captivity <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add indicator="no" place="over">l</add>aying the foundation of the Temple</add> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add indicator="no" place="over">i</add>n <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign of Cyrus. <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> the finishing of the Temple in <lb xml:id="l4"/>the reign of Darius, the return of Ezra &amp; his companions from captivity <lb xml:id="l5"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> seventh year of Artaxer<del type="over">s</del><add indicator="no" place="over">x</add>es &amp; building of the wall &amp; City by Ne<lb xml:id="l6"/>hemiah soon after.</p>

<p xml:id="par2">This history is conteined partly in the three first chapters of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> book <lb xml:id="l7"/>of Ezra &amp; <del type="cancelled">by five</del> first five verses of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> &amp; partly in the book of <lb xml:id="l8"/>Nehemiah from the 5<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> vers of the 7<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> chapter to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 9<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> verse of the 12<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> <lb xml:id="l9"/>For Nehemiah copied all this out of the Chronicles of the Iews as may <lb xml:id="l10"/>appear by reading the place &amp; considering that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">men</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Priests &amp; Levites</add> who sealed the <lb xml:id="l11"/>covenant in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 24<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of the seventh month were the very same <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l12"/><choice><sic>the</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> those who returned from captivity in the first year of Cyrus <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> all those who returned sealed it</add> <lb xml:id="l13"/>This you will perceive by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> following comparison of their names.</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3"><add indicator="no" place="lineEnd marginRight">The <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Levites</add> Kadmiel &amp; Hodaviah or Iudah here mentioned, are recconed chief fathers among the <lb xml:id="l14"/>people who returned with Zerubbabel <del type="cancelled">at first</del> (Ezra 2.40) &amp; they assisted as well <lb xml:id="l15"/>in laying the foundation of the Temple (Ezra 3.9) as in reading of the Law &amp; <lb xml:id="l16"/>making &amp; sealing the Covenant Nehem 8.7 &amp; 9.5 &amp; 10.9, 10.</add></p>

Of the History of the Iews in the reign of Darius Hystaspis.</add> But in <lb xml:id="l29"/>the second year of his reign by the prophesying of <del type="over">Z</del><add indicator="no" place="over">H</add>aggai &amp; Zechariah they returned <lb xml:id="l30"/>to the work &amp; by the help of a new Decree from Darius finished it <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">on the 3<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> day of the month Adar</add> in the <lb xml:id="l31"/><choice><sic>six</sic><corr>sixt</corr></choice> year of his reign &amp; kept the Dedication <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> joy &amp; the Passover &amp; Feast of unleavened bread.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">Now this Darius was <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">not Darius Nothus but</add> Darius Hystaspis as I gather by <del type="strikethrough">these arguments. <lb xml:id="l32"/>First</del> considering that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second year of this Darius <del type="strikethrough">[when by the <choice><sic>prophsying</sic><corr>prophesying</corr></choice> Haggai <lb xml:id="l33"/>&amp; Zechary they Iews returned to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> work]</del> was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 70<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> desolation of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ci<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel"/></del><add indicator="no" place="over">t</add>y <lb xml:id="l34"/>(Zech. 1.12 &amp; 7.5) <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is true of Darius Hystaspis</add> &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> at that time there were men living who had seen the <lb xml:id="l35"/>first Temple (Haggai 2.3) whereas <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second <del type="strikethrough">Temp</del> year of Darius Nothus <lb xml:id="l36"/>was 167 years after the desolation of the City. <del type="over">a</del><add indicator="no" place="over">A</add>nd <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">further</add> if the finishing of the <lb xml:id="l37"/>Temple be deferred to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sixt year of Darius Nothus, Ieshua &amp; Zerubbabel <lb xml:id="l38"/>must have been <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> one High Priest the other Capitain of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people for 112 <lb xml:id="l39"/>years together, besides their ages before; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is surely too long. For in the first <lb xml:id="l40"/>year of Cyrus the <del type="cancelled">chief</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">chief</add> Priests were Seraiah, Ieremiah, Ezra, Amariah, Malluch, <lb xml:id="l41"/>Shechaniah, Rehum, Meremoth, Iddo, Gen<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add indicator="no" place="over">e</add>tho, Abijah, Miamin, Maadiah, <lb xml:id="l42"/>Bilgah, Shemajah, Iojarib, Iedaiah, Sallu, Amock, Hilkiah, Iedaiah. These <lb xml:id="l43"/>were Priests in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> days of Ieshua, and the eldest sons of them all <del type="strikethrough">were Priests <lb xml:id="l44"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> days of Iojakim</del> (Merajah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of Serajah, Hanamiah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of Ieremiah <lb xml:id="l45"/>Me<add indicator="no" place="inline">s</add>hullam the son of Ezra &amp;c) were chief Priests in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> days of Ioja<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l46"/>kim the son of Ieshua (Nehem 12) &amp; therefore the High Priesthood of Ie<lb xml:id="l47"/>shua was but of an ordinary length.</p>

<head rend="center" xml:id="hd3">2 Of the History of the Iews in the reign of Xerxes &amp; <lb xml:id="l48"/><del type="strikethrough">Artaxerxes Longimanus</del> Artaxerxes Longimanus.</head>
<p xml:id="par6">I place th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add indicator="no" place="over">e</add> Histories of Ezra &amp; Nehemiah in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign of this Artax<lb xml:id="l49"/>erxes not in that of Artaxerxes M<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add indicator="no" place="over">ne</add>mon. For during all the Persian Mo<lb type="intentional" xml:id="l50"/>narchy there were six High Priests in continuall succession of father &amp; <lb xml:id="l51"/>son namely Ieshua, Iojakim, Eliasib, Iojada, Ionathan, Iaddua, &amp; if by an <lb xml:id="l52"/>equal division of the times of their Priesthood the<del type="over">ir</del><add indicator="no" place="over">re</add> be allotted about <lb xml:id="l53"/>34 years to each, so that all together may take up the whole time <lb xml:id="l54"/>of that Monarchy <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> stood 200 years the High Priesthood of Eliasib <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; by consequence the days of Ezra &amp; Nehemiah</add> will <lb xml:id="l55"/>fall in with the reign of the first Artaxerxes. For Ezra &amp; Nehemiah flou<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l56"/>ished in the High Priesthoods of Iojakim &amp; Eliasib Nehem 3.1 &amp; 12.26 &amp; 13.28 <lb xml:id="l57"/>But if Eliasib &amp; Nehemiah be placed in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">second year</del> reign of the second <lb xml:id="l58"/>Artaxerxes, since they lived beyond the 32<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> year of that King (Nehem 13.<lb xml:id="l59"/>28) there must be at least 157 years allotted to the three first High Priests <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">and</fw><pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/><fw type="pag" place="centerRight">2r</fw> and but 43 to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> five last, a division too unequal. For the High-Priest<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l60"/>hoods of Ieshua Iojakim &amp; Eliasib were but of an ordinary <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">length</add>, that of Ie<del type="cancelled">s</del><lb xml:id="l61"/>shua fell in with one generation of the chief Priests &amp; that of Iojakim <lb xml:id="l62"/>with the next generation (as we have shewed already) &amp; that of Eliasib <lb xml:id="l63"/>fell in with the third generation. I observe further that in the first year of <lb xml:id="l67"/>Cyrus Ieshua &amp; Bani or Binnui were chief fathers of the Levites (Nehem <lb xml:id="l68"/>8.10 &amp; Ezra 2.4 &amp; 3.9) &amp; that Iozabad the son of Ieshua &amp; Noadiah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l69"/>son of Binnui were chief Levites in the seventh year of Artaxerxes when <lb xml:id="l70"/>Ezra came to Ierusalem (Ezra 8.33) so that this Artaxerxes began his <lb xml:id="l71"/>reign before the end of the second generation. And that he reigned in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l72"/>time of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> third generation is confirmed by two instances more. For <lb xml:id="l73"/>Meshullam the son of Berechiah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of Meshezabeel &amp; Azariah <lb xml:id="l74"/>the son of Maasejah the son of Anamiah were fathers of their <lb xml:id="l75"/>houses at the repairing of the wall (Nehem 3.4, 23) &amp; their Grand<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l76"/>fathers Meshezabeel &amp; Hananiah subscribed the covenant in the <lb xml:id="l77"/>reign of Cyrus Nehem 10.21, 23. Yea Nehemiah himself this same <lb xml:id="l78"/>Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah was then Tirshatha &amp; subscribed it <lb xml:id="l79"/>(Nehem. 10.1 &amp; 8.9 &amp; Ezra 2.2, 63) &amp; therefore in the 32<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> year of <lb xml:id="l80"/>Artaxerxes Longimanus was above 120 years old &amp; if you produce <lb xml:id="l81"/>his age to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 32<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of Artaxerxes Mnemon he will be above 180 years <lb xml:id="l82"/>old, an age surely too great. The same may be said of Ezra if he <lb xml:id="l83"/>was that Priest &amp; Scribe who read the Law Nehem 8. For he is <lb xml:id="l84"/>the son of <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Serajah the son of</add> Azariah the son of Hilkiah the son of Shallum &amp;c (Ezra 7.1) <lb xml:id="l85"/>&amp; this Serajah went into captivity at the burning of the Temple &amp; <lb xml:id="l86"/>was there slain (1 Chron. 6.14<del type="cancelled">)</del> &amp; 2 King. 25.18) &amp; from his death to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l87"/>20<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> year of Artaxerxes Mnemon is above 200 years, an age too <lb xml:id="l88"/>great.</p>

And this <del type="cancelled">will</del> is confirmed by <del type="strikethrough">the book</del> comparing the book of Ezra <lb xml:id="l106"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first book of Esdras. So then <lb xml:id="l118"/>the Darius mentioned <del type="strikethrough">next after Cyrus</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">between Cyrus &amp; Achsuerus</add> is Darius Hystaspis &amp; <del type="strikethrough">his successors</del> there<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l119"/>fore Achswerus &amp; Artaxerxes who succeed him are Xerxes &amp; Artaxerxes <lb xml:id="l120"/>Longimanus &amp; <del type="strikethrough">they who</del> the Iews who came up from Artaxerxes to Ierusalem <lb xml:id="l121"/>&amp; began to build the city &amp; the wall<del type="cancelled">s</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Ezra 4.13</add> are Ezra <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> his companions. Or, to speak what I more suspect, the<del type="cancelled">se</del> <lb xml:id="l250"/><del type="strikethrough">letters</del> order of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">books o</del> leaves of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> books of <lb xml:id="l251"/>Ezra &amp; Nehemiah ha<del type="over">b</del><add indicator="no" place="over">s</add> been changed since <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first <lb xml:id="l252"/>writing &amp; these <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">two</add> letters inserted in a wrong place. <lb xml:id="l253"/>For these books &amp; the first book of Esdras consist <lb xml:id="l254"/>of the same <del type="strikethrough">sheets</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">parts of history</add> set together in different orders <lb xml:id="l255"/>&amp; the<del type="cancelled">se</del> story of the Temple is there continued <lb xml:id="l256"/>without the interposition of these letters. I suspect <lb xml:id="l257"/>therefore that <del type="strikethrough">after</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">when</add> Antiochus Epiphanes had burnt <lb xml:id="l258"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sacred writings &amp; made it death for any man <lb xml:id="l259"/>to conceale them &amp; Iudas Maccabeus <del type="strikethrough">had</del> recollected <lb xml:id="l260"/>what he <del type="cancelled">find</del> could afterwards find: some of the sacred <lb xml:id="l261"/>writings (as the book of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Chronicles of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kings of Israel) <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">were</fw><pb xml:id="p006r" n="6r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">6r</fw> <supplied reason="omitted">were</supplied> lost &amp; others found only in scattered leaves &amp; put <lb xml:id="l262"/>together <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">sometimes</add> in a wrong order. Certainly the 1<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> book of <lb xml:id="l273"/>Esdras <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> is made up of the same <del type="strikethrough">leaves</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">pieces of history</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> of <lb xml:id="l274"/>Ezra &amp; Nehemiah but <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled">set into</del></add> in another order: &amp; no man <lb xml:id="l275"/>would have joyned them in a wrong order had <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> right <lb xml:id="l276"/>order been then known. <p xml:id="par20">Now the history will become continued &amp; clear &amp; consonant <lb xml:id="l298"/>to pro<del type="over">fane</del><add indicator="no" place="over">phan</add><add indicator="no" place="inline">e</add> history if the joynts be read in this order, the <lb xml:id="l299"/>first, the second, the ninth, the third, the eighth, the fourth, <lb xml:id="l300"/>the sixt, the fift, the seventh, the ninth, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eighth the 10<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> <lb xml:id="l301"/>&amp; 11<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. And this will appear by these three <del type="strikethrough">things corrections</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">alterations</add>.</p>

In the letter to Artaxerxes there is no mention <lb xml:id="l356"/>of building <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Temple as there would have been <lb xml:id="l357"/>surely, had <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews been then about that <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; therefore tis of a later date<choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice></add>. The next year they laid the foundation of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l383"/>Temple but were hindred from <del type="cancelled">finishi</del> building all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign of <lb xml:id="l384"/>Cyrus &amp; Cam<del type="over">p</del><add indicator="no" place="over">b</add>yses till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 2<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> year of Darius <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Hystaspis.</add> Then they finished <lb xml:id="l385"/>it in four years. But so soon as their friend Darius was dead <lb xml:id="l386"/>their enemies <del type="cancelled">wrote</del> in the beginning of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign of his son <lb xml:id="l387"/>Ahashuerus or Xerxes wrote <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">an accusation</add> against them to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King. Afterwards he returned to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> king &amp; <lb xml:id="l402"/>the people in his absence began to corrupt themselves <lb xml:id="l403"/>but before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King's death he came again to Ieru<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l404"/>salem &amp; reformed them. For all Daniel's <lb xml:id="l454"/>Prophesies reach to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> end of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world &amp; th<del type="over">i</del><add indicator="no" place="over">e</add>re is scarce a <lb xml:id="l455"/>prophesy in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old Testament <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> concerning Christ <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> does <lb xml:id="l456"/>not in something or other relate to his second coming.
