<p>SL245, described in the Sotheby catalogue as <hi rend="italic">c.</hi> 300,000 words on 975 pp., was bought at the Sotheby sale by Gabriel Wells for £48 and sold to Yahuda on 1 Aug. 1936 for the sale price plus 15%. On 24 May 1949, Yahuda wrote to the London dealer Heinrich Eisemann, 'As to lot 245 the new arrangement and replacement of the pages resulted in 1,530 pages instead of 975 pages as many pages had to be taken out from other lots. But for this manuscript I have a customer who wants to pay a much higher price than $3,800 suggested by you.' If this was true, the prospective buyer's desire to part with his or her cash presumably waned. There must subsequently have been further reordering of the manuscript as the present Yahuda Ms. 7 amounts to nowhere near 1,530 pp.</p>

<p xml:id="par1">The Apocalyps is a Prophesy of the same kind with those of Daniel &amp; in the <lb xml:id="l1"/>same language, &amp; must be interpreted by comparing them.</p>
<p xml:id="par2">The great red Dragon that old serpent called the Devil &amp; Satan <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">who hath his seat in Pergamus</add> signifies the <lb xml:id="l2"/>same thing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> He-Goat in the reign of his last horn: namely the heathen Roman <lb xml:id="l3"/>Empire with respect to the Eastern nations of Greece Asia minor, Syria &amp; Egypt <lb xml:id="l4"/>represented by Daniels third Beast, &amp; <hi rend="underline">the Beast</hi> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> rose out of the sea or Abyss <lb xml:id="l5"/><del type="strikethrough">with ten</del> &amp; was like the <hi rend="underline">Leopard</hi> &amp; had feet as the feet of the <hi rend="underline">Bear</hi> &amp; a mouth like <lb xml:id="l6"/>the mouth of the <hi rend="underline">Lyon</hi> represents the same thing with <del type="strikethrough">his fourth</del> Daniels fourth <lb xml:id="l7"/>Beast. All Daniels four Beasts are named together in contrary order Apoc. 13. 2, &amp; <lb xml:id="l8"/>to signify that he is one of them <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; he is put first to signify that he is the last.</add><choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> The Dragon &amp; this Beast have common heads <lb xml:id="l9"/>&amp; horns with crowns upon the heads of the Dragon &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">upon the</add> horns of the Beast to signi<lb xml:id="l10"/>fy that <del type="cancelled">that</del> the Dragon reigns in the heads &amp; the Beast in the horns. The Dragon <lb xml:id="l11"/>includes the Beast during the reign of his first six heads &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">then</add> they separate &amp; the Dragō <lb xml:id="l12"/>reigns apart in his seventh head &amp; the Beast reigns apart in <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">his</add> horns. This <lb xml:id="l13"/>separation is made by steps. First the Beast <del type="strikethrough"><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">revived</add></del> after he had been wounded to <lb xml:id="l14"/>death by the sword of Constantius, <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">revived at the division <del type="cancelled">&amp; this was</del> of the Empire between Valentinian &amp; Valens</add> then he rose out of Sea or Islands of the sea <lb xml:id="l15"/>at the division of the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Roman</add> Empire between <del type="strikethrough">Valentinian &amp; Valens</del> Theodosius &amp; <lb xml:id="l16"/>Gratian &amp; then he received the Dragons Throne &amp; power &amp; great authority at <choice><sic>he</sic><corr>the</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l17"/>division of the Empire between the sons of Theodosius the great. And at the <lb xml:id="l18"/>same hour or time the ten horns received power as kings, the western <lb xml:id="l19"/>Empire then becoming divided into ten kingdoms.</p>
<p xml:id="par3">The Woman <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">in heaven</add> cloathed with the Sun <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> of righteousness &amp; the Moon of Iewish <lb xml:id="l20"/>ceremonies under her feet &amp; a crown of twelve starrs (the twelve Apostles) <lb xml:id="l21"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">on her head</add> <del type="strikethrough">under he feet</del>, is the primitive Church Catholick. In Dioclesians persecution <lb xml:id="l22"/>she cried travailing in birth of a Christian Empire &amp; pained to be delivered <lb xml:id="l23"/>And in that persecution the Dragon's tail drew the third part of the starrs <lb xml:id="l24"/>of heaven &amp; cast them to the earth. And the woman brought forth <lb xml:id="l25"/>a man child <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">was caught up to God</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">who at length in the end of ages was to rule</del> all nations with <lb xml:id="l26"/><del type="strikethrough">a rod of iron</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">who</add> was caught up to &amp; to his throne to return in the end <lb xml:id="l27"/>of ages &amp; rule all nations with a rod of iron. <del type="strikethrough">And there was war in <lb xml:id="l28"/>heaven between</del> And the woman fled into the wilderness. <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">where she hath a place <lb xml:id="l29"/>prepared of God that they should nourish her the a thousand two hundred &amp; sixty years.</add> <del type="strikethrough">And there was <lb xml:id="l30"/>war in <choice><sic>the the</sic><corr>the</corr></choice> heaven between Michael &amp; the Dragon.</del></p>
<p xml:id="par4"><del type="cancelled">And</del> In Dioclesians persecution &amp; the times next after <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">it</add> there was <lb xml:id="l31"/>war in heaven between Michael &amp; the Dragon, <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled">&amp;</del></add> that old serpent called <lb xml:id="l32"/>the Devil &amp; Satan (the heathen <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">dominion of Idolaters</add> <del type="strikethrough">idolatry)</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> deceiveth the whole world <lb xml:id="l33"/>was cast out of the Roman heaven to the earth, <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">or common people</add> &amp; his Angels (or heathen <lb xml:id="l34"/>Emperors &amp; great men were cast out with him. And there was a loud <lb xml:id="l35"/>voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation &amp; strength &amp; the kingdom <lb xml:id="l36"/>of our God &amp; the power of his Christ. For the accuser of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> brethren <lb xml:id="l37"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">is cast out</add> who accused them before God <del type="strikethrough">is cast</del> day &amp; night. <del type="strikethrough">is cast out, A</del> And <lb xml:id="l38"/>they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb &amp; by the word of their <lb xml:id="l39"/>testimony. And they loved not their lives unto the death. <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">But <gap reason="hand" extent="1" unit="words"/> be to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> inhabitants of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> earth</add> <del type="strikethrough">And the Devil</del> <lb xml:id="l40"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; sea because the Devil</add> of Idolatry is come down among <del type="strikethrough">the inhabitants of the earth &amp; sea</del> you <lb xml:id="l41"/>having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short <lb xml:id="l42"/>time. For by <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">dispersing the reliques of the saints</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">dispersing</del> crying up the miracles done by the reliques of the <lb xml:id="l43"/>Martyrs &amp; dispersing those reliques into all the Roman Empire he <lb xml:id="l44"/>set up Idolatry among the Christians, the heathens <del type="strikethrough">now coming</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">who now came</add> over to <lb xml:id="l45"/>the Christian<del type="strikethrough">s</del> religion in great numbers &amp; readily promoting these <lb xml:id="l46"/>superstitions.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">And when the Dragon saw that he was cast down he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the Woman by the division of <lb xml:id="l47"/>the Roman Empire into the Greek &amp; Latine Empires was given two wings of <lb xml:id="l48"/>a great Eagle that she might fly into the wilderness unto her place of riches <lb xml:id="l49"/>&amp; honour in the great city Babylon seated on seven hills, &amp; reign over the <del type="strikethrough">Latin <lb xml:id="l50"/>&amp; r</del> ten kings as is represented by their giving their power &amp; strength to the <lb xml:id="l51"/>Beast on <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> she setteth. And there she is nourished <del type="cancelled">for</del> a time times &amp; half <lb xml:id="l52"/>a time <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">the face of the serpent, or at a distance from him, she flying from him into the Empire</add> <del type="strikethrough">or 42 months each month consisting of 30 prophetic days, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">years</unclear> &amp; a pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l53"/>phetic day being put for a year. And when the Woman began to fly</del> of the Latines <lb xml:id="l54"/>&amp; he remaining in the <del type="cancelled">Emp</del> Empire of the <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">Greeks. And by the same division of the</add> <del type="strikethrough">Latines. And when she received the <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">two</unclear></del> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">Empire</fw><pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/> Empire the Dragon cast out waters as a flood <del type="strikethrough">cause her to b</del> after the <lb xml:id="l55"/>Woman <del type="strikethrough">after the Woman</del> to cause her to be carried away of the flood <lb xml:id="l56"/>And the earth (or Greek Empire) opened her mouth &amp; by the victory of Constantius <lb xml:id="l57"/>over <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> Magnentius a heathen, swallowed<del type="cancelled">d</del> up the flood &amp; wounded the Beast <lb xml:id="l58"/>to death with a sword. And the Dragon was wroth with the woman in the reign <lb xml:id="l59"/>of Iulian the Apostate, &amp; by a new division of the Empire went from the Woman <lb xml:id="l60"/>&amp; her Beast to make war with the remnant of her seed <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> keep the com<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l61"/>mandments of God &amp; had the testimony of Iesus. And by consequence the Woman <lb xml:id="l62"/><del type="strikethrough"><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">before her flight</add></del> was the true Church catholick before her flight, &amp; by her flight separated <lb xml:id="l63"/>from the true Church <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> kept the Commandments of God, &amp; after her flight <del type="cancelled">repre</del> <lb xml:id="l64"/>was an <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">apostate</add> hæretical Christian Church <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> forsook the Commandments of God &amp; flourished <lb xml:id="l65"/>in the regions of the Beast &amp; sat upon him as we find a little after. And at the <lb xml:id="l66"/>next division of the Empire <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was between Gratian &amp; Theodosius, the Beast whose <lb xml:id="l67"/>deadly wound was newly healed rose <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">up</add> out of the sea <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> seven heads &amp; ten horns &amp; ten <lb xml:id="l68"/>crowns upon his horns. <del type="strikethrough">And another Beast rose up or</del> And the Dragon by a final <lb xml:id="l69"/>division of the Empire between the sons of Theodosius, gave the Beast his old <lb xml:id="l70"/>power <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; throne &amp; great authority</add> over the <del type="strikethrough">Latin w</del> western nations. <del type="strikethrough">&amp; his old throne in the in And the ten <lb xml:id="l71"/>kings re the same hour the ten horns And the ten</del> And the ten horns of the Beast <lb xml:id="l72"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> had received no kingdoms as yet, received power as kings the same hour with <lb xml:id="l73"/>the Beast or within a <del type="strikethrough">sho</del> very short time as it were an hour after him. For <lb xml:id="l74"/>within 12 or 15 years after <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the death of</add> Theodosius they were all arisen with crowns on <lb xml:id="l75"/><del type="strikethrough">their heads</del> them.</p>
<p xml:id="par6">And when the Dragon went to make war with the remnant of the womans seed a <lb xml:id="l76"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> another Beast came up out of the earth &amp; had two horns like the Lamb being headed <lb xml:id="l77"/>by two <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">principal</add> Churches like the seven churches of Asia <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> were the <del type="cancelled">Lamb he</del> seven <lb xml:id="l78"/>horns of the Lamb. <del type="strikethrough">And he spoke as the Dragon</del> This Beast was therefore an <lb xml:id="l79"/>ecclesiastical body. And he spake as the Dragon being his Church, as the Woman <lb xml:id="l80"/>is the Church of the Beast. And he causeth the <del type="cancelled">first Beast &amp;</del> Earth (or nations of <lb xml:id="l81"/>the Greek Empire) to worship the first Beast whose deadly wound was healed, that is <lb xml:id="l82"/>to <del type="strikethrough"><unclear cert="high" resp="#mjh">sumit</unclear></del> venerate his authority in matters of religion, &amp; doth great wonders so that he <lb xml:id="l83"/>maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, the fire of a <lb xml:id="l84"/>lighted torch <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the Priest swings down from above his head in excommunicating those <lb xml:id="l85"/>who will not worship the first Beast, &amp; he <del type="strikethrough">causeth</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">said unto</add> them <choice><sic>that that</sic><corr>that</corr></choice> dwell on the <lb xml:id="l86"/>earth <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">that they should</add> make an image <del type="cancelled">to that</del> to the Beast that is that they should call a <lb xml:id="l87"/>Council of those who are of the Beasts religion for selling up that religion in <lb xml:id="l88"/>the <del type="strikethrough">Earth</del> Dragon dominions. And he gave life to the Image of the Beast, <del type="cancelled">th</del> so that <lb xml:id="l89"/>the Image should speak &amp; cause that as many as would no worship the Image <lb xml:id="l90"/>should be killed, that is that <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">all</add> the churches <del type="strikethrough">of all</del> should be dissolved who would <lb xml:id="l91"/>not <del type="strikethrough">worship</del> receive the religion of the first Beast set up by the authority of <lb xml:id="l92"/>the Image. And he causeth all both small and great rich &amp; poor, free &amp; bond to <lb xml:id="l93"/>receive a mark in their right hand or in their forehead, the signe of the cross <lb xml:id="l94"/>&amp; that no man might buy or sell save him that had the mark or name of the <lb xml:id="l95"/>Beast or number of his name, all the rest being excommunicated. And his <lb xml:id="l96"/>number is 666. And those that received not his name or number were 144000 <lb xml:id="l97"/>standing on mount Sion with the Lamb, having <del type="cancelled">the</del> his fathers name on their fore<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l98"/>head.  These were the 144000 sealed out of all the twelve tribes of Israel with <lb xml:id="l99"/>the seale of God in their foreheads, just before the Earth was hurt at the <lb xml:id="l100"/>sounding of the first Trumpet &amp; the sea at the sounding of the second. The earth <lb xml:id="l101"/>&amp; the <del type="strikethrough">Sea where they</del> I take here <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">almost</add> in the sense of the Iews who by the earth <lb xml:id="l102"/>understood <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">As th</del></add> the great continent of Egypt, Syria, &amp; all Asia &amp; by the Isles of the sea <lb xml:id="l103"/>the regions of Europe. By the sea therefore I understand <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">in this Pro<del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del>phesy</add> the nations of Europe <del type="strikethrough">under</del> <lb xml:id="l104"/>within the western Empire &amp; by the <del type="cancelled">se</del> Earth the nations within the Eastern. <del type="cancelled">And</del> <lb xml:id="l105"/><del type="strikethrough">whe</del> But when a third part of the Earth or Sea is mentioned I consider the <lb xml:id="l106"/>whole scene of Daniels Prophesies as divided into three parts one of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> comprehends the <lb xml:id="l107"/>nations <del type="strikethrough">represented beyond Euph</del> represented by his two first Beasts beyond Euphrates, another <lb xml:id="l108"/>those represented by his third Beast, &amp; the third those represented by his fourth Beast. <lb xml:id="l109"/>&amp; by a third part of the earth or sea understand one of these three parts. And <del type="strikethrough">the</del> <lb xml:id="l110"/>so <del type="strikethrough">like of</del> a third part of the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">rivers or</add> starrs or <del type="strikethrough">a third part of the</del> Sun &amp; Moon are a the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Rivers or</add> Starrs <lb xml:id="l111"/><del type="strikethrough">of a third part</del> or Sun &amp; Moon of a third part.</p>

<p xml:id="par7">– &amp; thereby becomes a horn of the Beast represented in Daniel by the <lb xml:id="l112"/>eleventh horn of this fourth Beast, &amp; with a look more stout then the rest <lb xml:id="l113"/>reigns over them; &amp; is therefore represented in Iohn as sitting upon the Beast, that is, reigning over him. And all the time of her reign, the two witnesses <lb xml:id="l114"/>prophesy in sackcloth.</p>
<p xml:id="par8">These witnesses are called two Olive trees &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">an</add> Olive trees <del type="strikethrough">are</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">is</add> by the Apo<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l115"/>stle Paul put for <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">a</add> Church<del type="cancelled">es</del> Rom. XI. In Zachary (ch. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> IV) <del type="strikethrough">they are put for</del> two <lb xml:id="l116"/>Olive branches feed the Lamps with oyle. They are called also two Candlesticks <lb xml:id="l117"/><del type="strikethrough">that is two</del> standing before God, that is two of the seven golden candlesticks <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l118"/>had been placed in the first Temple. Five of those <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> seven Candlesticks <del type="strikethrough">were</del> or Churches were found faulty &amp; threatned if they did not repent. The other <lb xml:id="l119"/>two, viz<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> the churches of Smyrna &amp; Philadelphia, were without fault. <del type="cancelled">And</del> <lb xml:id="l120"/><del type="strikethrough">They were in a state of</del> &amp; so were fit to be placed in the second temple <lb xml:id="l121"/>They were in a state of tribulation &amp; persecution &amp; the only two of the seven <lb xml:id="l122"/>in such a state &amp; so were fit to represent the Churches in affliction <del type="strikethrough">during</del> in <lb xml:id="l123"/>the time of the second Temple.</p>

<p xml:id="par9">The affairs of the Church begin to be considered at the opening of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 5<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>S. <lb xml:id="l124"/>as was said above. And then she is represented by a Woman in the Temple of <lb xml:id="l125"/><hi rend="underline">heaven</hi> cloathed - </p>
<p xml:id="par10">And at length the Woman arrived at her place of <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">riches honour &amp; dominion</add> <del type="strikethrough">dominion riches honour &amp; domi-</del> <lb xml:id="l126"/>upon the back of the Beast, where she is nourished for a time <choice><sic>time</sic><corr cert="high" type="noText"/></choice> times &amp; <del type="strikethrough">an</del> <lb xml:id="l127"/>half a time <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">or there <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del></add> from the face of the Serpent, not in his kingdom but at a distance <lb xml:id="l128"/>from him. She is nourished by the Merchants of the earth, three <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">times or</add> years &amp; <lb xml:id="l129"/>an half or 42 months or 1260 days, <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; in these <choice><sic>prophsies</sic><corr>prophesies</corr></choice> a day</add> <del type="strikethrough">that is so many <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">solar</add> years &amp; a day</del> is put <lb xml:id="l130"/>for a solar year. During all this time <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> the Beast made war &amp;</add> she sat up on <del type="strikethrough">the Beast</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">him</add>, that is <lb xml:id="l131"/>reigned over him &amp; over the ten kings who gave their kingdom to him. And <lb xml:id="l132"/>by all these circumstances she is the eleventh horn <del type="strikethrough">with</del> of Daniels fourth <lb xml:id="l133"/>Beast, who reigned with a look more stout then the other ten &amp; was of <lb xml:id="l134"/>a different kind from the rest <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">having eyes &amp; a mouth like the woman &amp; lo</add> being both male &amp; female <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">civil &amp; Ecclesiastical</add>, &amp; made war with <lb xml:id="l135"/>the saints &amp; prevailed against <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">them</add> &amp; wore them out &amp; had times &amp; laws given <lb xml:id="l136"/>into his had untill a time times &amp; half a time. The characters of the women <lb xml:id="l137"/>&amp; little horn agree perfectly. <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> In respect of her temporal dominion she <lb xml:id="l138"/>was a horn of the Beast, in respect of <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">his</add> spiritual dominion she was his Church <lb xml:id="l139"/>&amp; <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> rode upon him, &amp; committed fornication <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the ten kings.</p>
<p xml:id="par11">And the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">second</add> Beast <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> rose up out of the earth was the Church of the Greek Empire. For it had two horns like those of the Lamb &amp; therefore was a Church <lb xml:id="l140"/>&amp; it spoke as the Dragon &amp; therefore was of the Dragons religion. It is <lb xml:id="l141"/>called also the fals Prophet that <choice><sic>wrough</sic><corr>wrought</corr></choice> miracles before the first Beast <lb xml:id="l142"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he deceived them that received the mark of the Beast &amp; worshipped <lb xml:id="l143"/>his Image. When the Dragon went from the Woman to make war upon <lb xml:id="l144"/>the remnant of her seed, this Beast rising out of the earth assisted the Dragon <lb xml:id="l145"/>in that war, &amp; caused the earth &amp; them that dwell therein to worship the <del type="cancelled">first</del> <lb xml:id="l146"/>authority of the first Beast &amp; to make an Image to him <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">that is a convention like him in <del type="strikethrough">point her</del> religion</add>, &amp; gave life to the <lb xml:id="l147"/>Image so that it could speak &amp; <del type="strikethrough">cause all m</del> (by excommunication) <del type="cancelled">call</del> cause all <lb xml:id="l148"/>men to be (mystically <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">killed</add> who would not worship it. And he causeth all men to <lb xml:id="l149"/>receive a mark in their right hand or in their forehead &amp; that no man might <lb xml:id="l150"/>buy or sell save <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> he that had the mark or <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the</add> name of the Beast or the number <lb xml:id="l151"/>of his name, all the rest being excommunicated. Thus <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Woman fled from the first Temple into the Wilderness of Arabia <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> towards Babylon &amp;</add> the Dragon by the <lb xml:id="l152"/>assistance of the two horned Beast made war upon the remnant of the <lb xml:id="l153"/>Womans seed &amp; <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">&amp; the first Temple being destroyed a new one was built</add> the Gentiles took possession of the outward court of the Temple, <lb xml:id="l154"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; trode the holy city under foot</add> &amp; out of all the twelve tribes of Israel [represented by that remnant] there were <lb xml:id="l155"/>only 144000 sealed with the name of God in their foreheads, &amp; these worship<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l156"/>ped in the Inner court called the new Court <del type="cancelled">&amp; the Court</del> &amp; the Court of the weomen <lb xml:id="l157"/>&amp; appears to Iohn in this Court standing on Mount Sion with the Lamb &amp; (as <lb xml:id="l158"/>it were) on the sea of glass. These are the saints of the most high &amp; the <lb xml:id="l159"/>host of heaven &amp; the holy people spoken <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">of</add> by Daniel, <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">as <del type="strikethrough">oppressed</del> worn out trampled un<lb xml:id="l160"/>der foot &amp; destroyed in</add> who were to be oppressed in <lb xml:id="l161"/>the latter times by the little horns of Daniels fourth Beast &amp; He-Goat.</p>
<p xml:id="par12">And while the Gentiles tread the holy city under foot, God gives power to his <lb xml:id="l162"/>two Witnesses &amp; they <del type="strikethrough">tread the</del> prophesy in sackcloth. They are called the two Olive trees <lb xml:id="l163"/>with relation to the two Olive trees <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> in Zecharies Visions (ch. 4) stand on either <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">side</fw><pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/> side of the golden Candlestick to supply the lamps with oyle, &amp; <del type="strikethrough">Candlestic</del> <lb xml:id="l164"/>Olive trees according to the Apostle Paul represent Churches Rom. XI. They <lb xml:id="l165"/>are also called two Candlesticks, &amp; Candlesticks in this Prophesy signify Church<lb xml:id="l166"/>es, the seven Candlesticks being put for the seven Churches of Asia. Five of <lb xml:id="l167"/>those Churches were found faulty &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">threatned if they did not</add> <del type="strikethrough">commanded to</del> Repent. The other two <lb xml:id="l168"/><del type="strikethrough">were blamebed</del> viz<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> the Churches of Smyrna &amp; Philadelphia were <del type="strikethrough">blameless</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">without fault</add> <lb xml:id="l169"/>&amp; in a state of Persecution <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; so were fit to be placed in the second Temple</add>. <del type="cancelled">&amp; so</del> <del type="blockStrikethrough">Conceive therefore that the Candlesticks <lb xml:id="l170"/>representing these two Churches, are placed in the second Temple <del type="strikethrough">to repr</del> to <lb xml:id="l171"/>represent all those that teach &amp; testify the truth against the worshippers <lb xml:id="l172"/>of the Beast and his Image. <del type="strikethrough">And that they are called to</del> They are not new <lb xml:id="l173"/>Churches but the posterity of the primitive Church. <del type="strikethrough">[All the seven Candlesticks <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">jointly &amp; separately</add> by their lamps illuminate the whole Temple with all that worship therein, &amp; <lb xml:id="l174"/>And all the lamps are dressed by sending <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">the</add> seven Epistles that each of them may <lb xml:id="l175"/>illuminate the <del type="cancelled">Church</del> whole Temple the better]</del> &amp; therefore are represented <lb xml:id="l176"/>by two of the primitive Candlesticks. <del type="cancelled">A The</del> And as the primitive Church Catholick <lb xml:id="l177"/>in the times of the first Temple was represented by the seven Churches of Asia <lb xml:id="l178"/>without dividing <del type="cancelled">it</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the whole</add> into seven Churches, so the true Church in <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the</add> times of the second <lb xml:id="l179"/>Temple may be represented by two of the seven Churches without dividing the whole into two visible Churches. <p xml:id="par13">were without fault, &amp; so <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">their Candlesticks</add> were fit to be placed in the second Temple. They were <lb xml:id="l180"/>in a state of tribulation &amp; persecution &amp; the only two of the seven in such a state <lb xml:id="l181"/>&amp; so were fit to represent the Churches in affliction in the times of the second <lb xml:id="l182"/>Temple. The two witnesses are not new Churches: <del type="strikethrough">but</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">They are</add> the posterity of the primitive <lb xml:id="l183"/>Church, &amp; so were fitly represented by two of the primitive Candlesticks. Con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l184"/>ceive therefore that where the first Temple was destroyed <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; a new one built</add> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> two of the seven <lb xml:id="l185"/>Candlesticks were placed in the second.</p>

<p xml:id="par15">And first 5 of those taken from heathen customes as the mark of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Beast <lb xml:id="l189"/>&amp; seale of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> servants of God from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> Romans marking their servants <lb xml:id="l190"/>in their foreheads &amp; soldiers for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most part in their hands. <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">This signifies that men serves that <del type="cancelled">Beas</del> fals God the Beast, that is worship his Gods 1</add> The whores <lb xml:id="l191"/>cup from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> philtre's <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> leud weomen used to provoke their lovers. <lb xml:id="l192"/>2 The name written on her forehead from the custome of prostitute weo<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l193"/>men of old to set up an inscription on their doors &amp; some times to wear <lb xml:id="l194"/>it on their heads. 3 The name of Babylon from the analogy of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great <lb xml:id="l195"/>city where <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> whore reineth to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old Babylon, as being the seat of empire, <lb xml:id="l196"/><del type="cancelled">captivating o</del> oppressing &amp; dispersing the people of God, &amp; making their out<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l197"/>ward worship cease, but chiefly as Idolatrous, making all nations worship <lb xml:id="l198"/>the kings Image Dan 3. 4 And hence <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">also &amp; from the story of Darius. Some expressions there are taken from profane history as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mark of the Beast, the whores cup, the name <lb xml:id="l226"/>in her forehead.</p>

For Iohn tells us that immediately he was in the spirit &amp; he that hath an ear let him hear what <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> spirit <lb xml:id="l230"/>saith unto the <lb xml:id="l231"/>Churches &amp; <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l232"/>spirit &amp; the Bride <lb xml:id="l233"/>say come. Even</del> <lb xml:id="l234"/>Christ saith I <lb xml:id="l235"/>Iesus have sent <lb xml:id="l236"/>mine Angel to <lb xml:id="l237"/>testify these things <lb xml:id="l238"/>to you in the Chur<lb xml:id="l239"/>ches - &amp; the Spirit <lb xml:id="l240"/>&amp; the Bride say <lb xml:id="l241"/>come. Even</add> Christ himself &amp; sometimes <del type="strikethrough">called an rep</del> called an Angel: <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">For</add> <del type="strikethrough">as in this <lb xml:id="l251"/>So in Daniel he is as the Angel Micha called Michael the great Prince who alone holdeth <lb xml:id="l252"/>in prophetic matters <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the Angel who was sent to Daniel, &amp;</del> in this Prophesy he is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l253"/>mighty Angel who appears <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">in a cloud</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">a rainbow about his head &amp;</add> his face as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun &amp; his feet as pillars of fire &amp; a little <lb xml:id="l254"/>book of prophesy in his hand Apoc 10, &amp; in Daniel he is called Michael <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great Prince <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">of Israel (or Messiah)</add> who at <lb xml:id="l255"/>alone holdeth in <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">all in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> book at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> resurrection of</del> the resurrection of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">dead</unclear></del> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sleep in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> dust standeth up &amp; who</add> prophetic matters <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the Angel who was sent with a prophesy to <lb xml:id="l256"/>Daniel. An Angel is a messenger &amp; the son is sent by the father &amp; the spirit of truth <lb xml:id="l257"/>by the son, &amp; all the Prophets <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">were sent</add> by the spirit of truth <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">especially <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Moses</add> Daniel &amp; Iohn</add> <del type="strikethrough">For all Prophesy is given by inspiration <lb xml:id="l258"/>of the Holy Ghost. This is that Angel <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> spoke to Moses in Mount Sina Ac &amp;</del> the Law was <lb xml:id="l259"/>given by the same Angel in Mount Sina Act 7. 38. This spirit <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">are</unclear></del></add> appears in <del type="strikethrough">various</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">any</del> various</add> form<del type="cancelled">s</del> &amp; <lb xml:id="l260"/>when ever he appears in a human form he is called an Angel, &amp; sometimes a man. This Angel is a seven fold <lb xml:id="l261"/>form is the seven spirits before the Throne from whom Iohn wishes grace &amp; peace to the Churches</del></p>
<p xml:id="par17"><del type="blockStrikethrough">[As <del type="cancelled">all</del> the two Prophesies of Daniels Beats &amp; <del type="cancelled">that</del> those of Nebuchadnezzars <lb xml:id="l262"/>dreams consist <del type="cancelled">of t</del> each of them of two parts, the first a prophetick vision, <lb xml:id="l263"/>the second an interpretation of the vision; so this of Iohn consists also of two <lb xml:id="l264"/>parts, a <del type="strikethrough">vision</del> prophetic vision &amp; an interpretation thereof. The Vision ends <lb xml:id="l265"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the seventh Trumpet: the interpretation begins<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> immediately after in <lb xml:id="l266"/>these words <hi rend="underline">And the Temple of God was opened in heaven &amp; <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> there was <lb xml:id="l267"/>seen in the Temple the Ark of his testament</hi> &amp;c The vision consists of two <lb xml:id="l268"/>parts: the first part is the <del type="strikethrough">Prophesy</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">of the</del> Revelation</add> of the sealed Book &amp; the scene of this <lb xml:id="l269"/><del type="strikethrough">prophesy</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">part</add> in the first Temple or Temple of Solomon; the second part is the <lb xml:id="l270"/>prophesy of the little open book &amp; the scene of this <del type="strikethrough">Prophesy</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">part</add> is the second <lb xml:id="l271"/>Temple or Temple of Zerubbabel. The interpretation of the first <lb xml:id="l272"/>part begins <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the words above mentioned <hi rend="underline">And the Temple of God <lb xml:id="l273"/>was opened in heaven</hi> &amp;c, <del type="cancelled">The</del> and ends with the <del type="cancelled">vin</del> harvest &amp; vintage <lb xml:id="l274"/>&amp; the scene of this interpretation is the first Temple: the interpre<lb xml:id="l275"/>tation of the second part begins <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the <del type="cancelled">prophesy of</del> <del type="strikethrough">seven last p</del> words <lb xml:id="l276"/><hi rend="underline">And I saw another <del type="strikethrough">great</del> sign in heaven great &amp; marvelous seven Angels <lb xml:id="l277"/>having the seven last plagues</hi> &amp; continues to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> end of the Apocalyps <lb xml:id="l278"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">The whole Prophesy is the Revelation of a sealed Book &amp; the</add> <del type="strikethrough">&amp; the vision is the Revelation of a sealed Book &amp; the scene of</del> <lb xml:id="l279"/><del type="cancelled">The</del> scene of the whole is the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">first Temple or</add> Temple of Solomon; excepting that <lb xml:id="l280"/>between the sixt &amp; seventh Trumpet is inserted a prophesy of <lb xml:id="l281"/>a<del type="cancelled">n</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">little</add> open book the second of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is the second Temple, &amp; the inter<lb xml:id="l282"/>pretation of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is the <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> vision of the seven last plagues <del type="cancelled">&amp; the whole <lb xml:id="l283"/>of Babylon</del> in the same second Temple, &amp; that of the whore in the Wilderness <lb xml:id="l284"/>of Arabia.</del></p>

<p xml:id="par18"><del type="blockStrikethrough"><hi rend="underline">The Iewish service began every morning ----</hi> <lb xml:id="l285"/><del type="cancelled">2 Iew Vpon</del> <lb xml:id="l286"/>3. This Prophesy is of the highest <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">consequence</add> not for foreknowing things to come, <del type="cancelled">for</del> but for satisfying them that study it <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; compare it <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> things past</add> <lb xml:id="l287"/>that the world is governed by Providence <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">that Christ rose for</del></add> that there is a revealed religion <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> what is that religion &amp; who <lb xml:id="l288"/>they are that profess it &amp; who err from the truth <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; in particular that Christ is the Messiah <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp;</add> is risen from the dead.</add><choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> Tis of so high consequence to salvation <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">in the last times</add> that <lb xml:id="l289"/>that <del type="cancelled">Christ <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> Iohn tells us <hi rend="underline">Blessed is he that readeth &amp; they that hear the words of this prophe<lb xml:id="l290"/>sy <del type="cancelled">that</del> &amp; keep those things that are written therein.</hi> And <hi rend="underline">he that hath an ear let him <lb xml:id="l291"/>hear what the spirit saith unto <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches.</hi> And <hi rend="underline">if any man shall add to these things God <lb xml:id="l292"/>shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: &amp; if any man shall take from <lb xml:id="l293"/>the<del type="strikethrough">se things God</del> words of this book God shall take away his part out of the book of life.</hi> There <lb xml:id="l294"/>no book in all the scriptures so much recommended &amp; guarded by providence as this.</del></p>
<p xml:id="par19"><del type="blockStrikethrough">It is said to be of things <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> must shortly come to pass &amp; that the time is at hand. <del type="strikethrough">Whence <lb xml:id="l295"/>some have though</del> For it began to be fulfilled from the time that it was written &amp; a thousand <lb xml:id="l296"/>years are with the Lord but as one day. It conteins one period of 1000 years, another of <del type="cancelled">1260</del> <lb xml:id="l297"/>a time time times &amp; half a time which is the main period of Daniels fourth Beast &amp; there<lb xml:id="l298"/>fore concerns a much longer time then a thousand years, &amp; may extend to the second coming o<supplied>f</supplied> <lb xml:id="l299"/>Christ <del type="cancelled">as a</del> &amp; the day of judge<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> as it realy doth.</del></p>

<p xml:id="par20"><del type="blockStrikethrough">For the Apostles Peter &amp; Paul studied this Prophesy &amp; have many things in their <lb xml:id="l300"/>Epistles relating to it, as in the Epistle to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Hebrews discourses upon the great <lb xml:id="l301"/><hi rend="underline">High Priest</hi> &amp; the frame of the <hi rend="underline">Temple</hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">sacrifices,</hi> &amp; the <hi rend="underline">Word of God</hi> <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <lb xml:id="l302"/>more powe<hi rend="underline">rfull</hi></del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">sharper</add> <hi rend="underline">then a two edged sword</hi>, &amp; the <hi rend="underline">heavenly <del type="cancelled">city</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Ierusalem</add></hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">general assembly</hi> <lb xml:id="l303"/>&amp; <hi rend="underline">cloud of witnesses</hi>: in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first Epistle <del type="cancelled">to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> of Peter, <hi rend="underline">the inheritance incorruptible <lb xml:id="l304"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><choice><sic>reseved</sic><corr>reserved</corr></choice></add> in heaven ready to be revealed in the last time</hi>, <hi rend="underline">redemption by the pretious blood <lb xml:id="l305"/>of Christ as of a Lamb without blemish</hi>, <hi rend="underline">the royal priesthood</hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">the Church <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> at Babylon</hi> <lb xml:id="l306"/>that is, at Rome. And in the second Epistle of Peter, <del type="strikethrough">the <hi rend="underline"><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp;</add> more sure word of Prophesy,</hi></del>, <hi rend="underline">the false <lb xml:id="l307"/>Prophets</hi>, <hi rend="underline">the merchants</hi>, <hi rend="underline">Sodom</hi>, <hi rend="underline">blaspheming <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">of</add> glories</hi>, <hi rend="underline">Brute Beasts made to be taken &amp; destroyed</hi> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">rioting in the day time while they feast with you having</add> <hi rend="underline">eyes <lb xml:id="l308"/>full of an adulteress &amp; following the way of Balaam</hi>, <hi rend="underline">scoffers in the last days walking after their own lusts,</hi> <lb xml:id="l309"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><hi rend="underline">the thousand years,</hi> the day of the Lord coming as a thief in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the heavens pass away &amp; we look for new</add> <hi rend="underline"><del type="strikethrough">the passing away of the heavens in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> day of the Lord &amp;</del> a new heaven &amp; new earth.</hi> And in the beginning of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l310"/>Epistle there is this exhortation to study the Prophesy.</del></p>
<p xml:id="par21"><del type="blockStrikethrough">✝<add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">For making known the power &amp; coming of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Lord we <del type="strikethrough">did not only</del> heard <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> voice from heaven when we were with him in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> <hi rend="underline">we have <add indicator="yes" place="infralinear">also</add> a more sure word of Prophesy whereunto y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> do well that y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> take heed as unto a light that <lb xml:id="l311"/>shineth in a dark place untill</hi> [by the fulfilling thereof] <hi rend="underline">the day dawn &amp; the day star arise in your hearts: <lb xml:id="l312"/>knowing this first that</hi> [you are not to expect the interpretation from Iohn <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Prophet</add> but to study it yours selves <lb xml:id="l313"/>for] <hi rend="underline">no prophesy of the Scriptures is of <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">the <choice><sic>propthets</sic><corr>prophets</corr></choice> own</add> <del type="strikethrough">any private</del> interpretation. For the prophesy came <lb xml:id="l314"/>not of <del type="cancelled">of</del> old by the will of man but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">spirit</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l315"/>holy Ghost.</hi></del></p>

<p xml:id="par22">When the Romans made war upon the Iews in Iudea Iohn <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; Peter</add> retired <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> many of the Christian Iews <lb xml:id="l316"/>into Asia minor, <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; Peter went on to Rome</del></add> &amp; the Romans looking upon all the Iews as enemies of the Empire secured the <lb xml:id="l317"/>heads of them &amp; banished Iohn into Patmos <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">&amp;</add> there he wrote his Apocalyps <del type="cancelled">&amp; <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> <del type="strikethrough">whence this book is <lb xml:id="l318"/>fuller of</del> a little before the end of Nero's reign, as <del type="cancelled">Arethas</del> the Syriac version, Arethas, Eusebius &amp; <lb xml:id="l319"/>Pseudo <space dim="horizontal" unit="words" extent="1"/> testify. Whence this book is fuller of Hebraisms then the Gospel <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was written <lb xml:id="l320"/>long after, &amp; the style of his Gospel by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> use of many Apocalyptic expressions is more lofty <lb xml:id="l321"/>then that of the other Evangelists. Peter <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">stayed not in</add> <del type="strikethrough">only touched upon</del> Asia but went on to Rome where <lb xml:id="l322"/>he wrote his two Epistles to the dispersed <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Christian Iews <del type="cancelled">in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del></add> <del type="cancelled">Iews</del> directing the first of them to the strangers scattered throughout <lb xml:id="l323"/>Pontus Galatia Cappadocia Asia &amp; Bithynia, &amp; calls their suffering a fiery trial. <del type="cancelled">By these epistles &amp; <lb xml:id="l324"/>the</del> Paul <del type="cancelled">had</del> was an Apostle of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> uncircumcision as Peter of the circumcision &amp; had planted the churches of <lb xml:id="l325"/>Asia among the Gentiles but now <del type="cancelled">by</del> the Christian Iews being dispersed into those parts he wrote his <lb xml:id="l326"/>Epistle to the Hebrews <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled">that</del></add> in a differing stile from that of <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del>his other Epistles <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">exhorting them to endure chastening <unclear reason="illgbl" cert="medium">that</unclear> at present it seemeth grievous &amp; telling them that they had not yet resisted unto blood.</add><choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> For this Epistle was written <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">not</add> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l327"/>Hebrews in Iudea but to those in Asia as I gather by his telling them that the brother Timothy was set at <lb xml:id="l328"/>liberty <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Timothy was Bishop of Ephesus &amp; had nothing to do in Iudea. <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; by Peters telling those to whom he wrote that Paul had written to them.</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; by Peters</del></add> By these Epistles it seems to me that Peter &amp; <lb xml:id="l329"/>Paul had studied the Apocalyps, there being many things in these Epistles relating to it, As in the Epistle to the <lb xml:id="l330"/>Hebrews, the <del type="cancelled">sab</del> <foreign xml:lang="gre">σαββατισμος</foreign> <del type="cancelled">or <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><hi rend="underline">or day of rest</hi></add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is the 1000 years, <hi rend="underline">the word of God sharper then a two edged sword</hi> discourses on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great <hi rend="underline">high Priest</hi>, <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">on</add> the frame of the <hi rend="underline">Temple</hi> &amp; <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">on</add> <hi rend="underline">Sacrifices</hi> therein; <hi rend="underline">the <del type="cancelled">cloud of</del> heavenly city <lb xml:id="l331"/>which hath foundations whose builder is God,</hi> <del type="cancelled">the</del> <hi rend="underline"><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">a</add> cloud of witnesses</hi> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">(a phrase peculiar to the Apocalyps)</add>; <del type="cancelled">then</del> <hi rend="underline">the coming to mount Sion <lb xml:id="l332"/>unto <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> city of the living God the heavenly Ierusalem &amp; to an innumerable company of Angels &amp; to <lb xml:id="l333"/>the general assembly &amp; to God the judge of all,</hi> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">&amp;</add> <hi rend="underline">the shaking of the heaven &amp; earth</hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">removing them <lb xml:id="l334"/>that we may receive a kingdom</hi> [in a new heaven &amp; earth] <hi rend="superscript"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> cannot be moved.</hi> In the firs Epistle <lb xml:id="l335"/>to Peter the <hi rend="underline">inheritance incorruptible reserved in the heavens ready to be revealed in the last time, <lb xml:id="l336"/>redemption by the pretious blood of Christ as of a Lamb <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out blemish</hi>, the <hi rend="underline">royal Priesthood</hi> &amp; the <lb xml:id="l337"/>Church <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is at <hi rend="underline">Babylon.</hi> Peter calls Rome Babylon because <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">it</add> <del type="strikethrough">the seven hilled city, the great city <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l338"/>reigned over the kings of the earth, the woman <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> sat upon Daniels fourth Beast</del> is called Babylon in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apo<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l339"/> &amp; was then besieging &amp; captivating the Iews as <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">old</add> Babylon had done before. And further in the second epistle <lb xml:id="l340"/>there is this exhortation to study the Apocalyps. For making known the power &amp; coming of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Lord we <lb xml:id="l341"/>heard the voice from heaven when we were with him in the holy mount saying this is my beloved son in <lb xml:id="l342"/>whom I am well pleased: <hi rend="underline">We have also a more sure word of Prophesy whereunto y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> do well to take heed as <lb xml:id="l343"/>unto a light <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">that</add> shineth in a dark place untill</hi> [by the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">gradually</add> fulfilling &amp; <del type="strikethrough">understanding</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">interpreting</add> thereof] <hi rend="underline">the <del type="cancelled">light</del> day <lb xml:id="l344"/>down <del type="strikethrough">in <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> hearts</del> &amp; the day star arise in <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> hearts: knowing this first that</hi> [you are not to <lb xml:id="l345"/>expect the interpretation from Iohn the Prophet, but to study it <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> selves, for] <hi rend="underline">no prophesy of <lb xml:id="l346"/>the scriptures is of the Prophets own interpretation: For the Prophesy came not of old by the will <lb xml:id="l347"/>of man, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy ghost.</hi> And the remainder <lb xml:id="l348"/>of this Epistle seems to be a continual commentary on this prophesy, describing <del type="strikethrough">the</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">how</add> <hi rend="underline">fals Prophets</hi> &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">fals</add> <hi rend="underline">teachers</hi> <lb xml:id="l349"/><del type="cancelled"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del> should arise &amp; how their followers should <hi rend="underline">blaspheme the truth</hi> &amp; make <hi rend="underline">merchandise</hi> of <del type="cancelled">the</del> Christians &amp; <lb xml:id="l350"/>should perish like <hi rend="underline">Sodom</hi>, <del type="strikethrough">speaking evil of glor</del> <hi rend="underline">blaspheming glories,</hi> being as <hi rend="underline">natural brute Beasts made to be <lb xml:id="l351"/>taken &amp; destroyed</hi>, counting it pleasure to riot &amp; sport in <hi rend="underline">feasting</hi>, having eyes <hi rend="underline">full of an Adulteress,</hi> &amp; following <lb xml:id="l352"/>the way of <hi rend="underline">Balaam.</hi> And that there shall come in the last days scoffers saying, where is the promise of his <lb xml:id="l353"/>coming? for since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the <del type="strikethrough">creation</del> beginning of the cre<lb xml:id="l354"/>ation: <del type="cancelled">But</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">where as with the Lord</add> a <hi rend="underline">thousand years</hi> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">[mentions in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apocalyps]</add> is as one day &amp; the day of the Lord will <hi rend="underline">come as a thief</hi> in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the <hi rend="underline">heavens shall <lb xml:id="l355"/>pass away</hi>, &amp; we, according to his promise, <del type="strikethrough">expect</del> look for <hi rend="underline">new heavens &amp; a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness.</hi></p>
<p xml:id="par23">This Prophesy as it was studied by the Apostles, so it was <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">at first</add> generally received in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches for the first <lb xml:id="l356"/>200 years, <del type="strikethrough">And as there were men</del> commented upon by</p>

<p xml:id="par24">And as the true gospels gave occasion to many false gospels &amp; the true Acts of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apostles to many <lb xml:id="l357"/>false Acts: so there were many false Apocalypses <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> would never have been written had there not <lb xml:id="l358"/>been a true one.</p>
<p xml:id="par25"><del type="strikethrough">The first Christian the</del></p>
<p xml:id="par26">Dionysius of Alexandria so far as I can find was the first that questioned it &amp; he <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">did not</add> question <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> its <lb xml:id="l359"/><del type="cancelled">being</del> being received by tradition, nor durst oppose<del type="cancelled">d</del> it openly it being then generally received, but comple<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l360"/>mented it &amp; tried to undermine it by pretending that it differed in style from Iohn's Gospel &amp; therefore <lb xml:id="l361"/>was writ by another Iohn. Which being a frivolous objection the followers of Dionysius <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">are not to be <lb xml:id="l362"/>regarded</add> <del type="strikethrough">who afterwards <lb xml:id="l363"/>called it in question had no reason for why they did</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">calling it in question</add>. All the difference in style is that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apoca<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l364"/>lyps has more hebraisms then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gospel being writ when Iohn came newly out of Iudea &amp; that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l365"/><del type="strikethrough">Apocalyps</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">it</add> is a Prophesy writ in the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">mystical</add> style of the Prophets <del type="cancelled">the of</del> by an extraordinary impulse of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l366"/>spirit, &amp; the Gospel <del type="cancelled">a plain h</del> a plain history. In all the new Testament there is no book <lb xml:id="l367"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> approaches the lofty style of the Apocalyps more nearly then the Gospel &amp; Epistles <lb xml:id="l368"/>of Iohn. <del type="strikethrough">To instance only in the beginning of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gospel</del> The Gospel begins thus: <hi rend="underline">In the begin<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l369"/>ning was the word &amp; the word was with God &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word was God. The same was in the begin<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l370"/>ing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> God. All things were made by him &amp; without him was nothing made that was made <lb xml:id="l371"/>In him <del type="cancelled">he</del> was life &amp; the life is the light of <del type="cancelled">the world</del> men. And the light shineth in darkness <lb xml:id="l372"/>&amp; the darkness comprehendeth it not. There was a man sent from God whose name was Iohn <lb xml:id="l373"/>The same came for a witness to bear witness of the light that all men through him <lb xml:id="l374"/>might believe. He was not that light but was sent to bear witness of that light. That <lb xml:id="l375"/>was the true light <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> lightneth every man that cometh into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world. - <del type="strikethrough">Behold the</del> #<addSpan spanTo="#addend006r-01" place="p006r-higher" startDescription="higher up f 6r" endDescription="lower down f 6r" resp="#mjh"/># The only begotten son who is in the bosom of the father - the Lamb of God who taketh <lb xml:id="l376"/>away the sins of the world - He that came down from heaven - the bridegroom</hi> <anchor xml:id="addend006r-01"/> <lb xml:id="l377"/><del type="strikethrough">Lam</del> Iohn seeth Iesus coming into him &amp; saith <hi rend="underline">Behold the Lamb of God <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> taketh away <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l378"/>sins of the world.</hi> And <del type="cancelled">what</del> is not all this very style &amp; language of the Apocalyps <lb xml:id="l379"/>where Christ is called <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the son of God</add> <hi rend="underline">the Word of God</hi> &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><hi rend="underline">the faithful &amp; true witness</hi></add> <hi rend="underline">the beginning of the creation of God</hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">the first <lb xml:id="l380"/>&amp; the last</hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">he that is alive for evermore</hi> &amp; the <hi rend="underline">light of the new Ierusalem</hi> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">his face being as the Sun</add> &amp; <hi rend="underline">the Lamb</hi> <lb xml:id="l381"/><del type="strikethrough">slain</del> <hi rend="underline">who was slain &amp; hath redeemed us <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">to God</add> by his blood,</hi> &amp; <hi rend="underline">washed <del type="strikethrough">away <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> sins by</del> us from our</hi> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> <lb xml:id="l382"/><hi rend="underline">sins in his own blood,</hi> And before whom the <del type="strikethrough">four</del> people represented by the four Beasts <lb xml:id="l383"/>&amp; 24 Elders <hi rend="underline">fall down &amp; worship:</hi> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">&amp; whose Bride is the new Ierusalem: &amp; who in form of a mighty Angel came</add> <del type="cancelled">All</del> of all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Iohn <hi rend="underline">bare witness</hi> &amp; Iesus sent his Angel to <hi rend="underline">testify</hi> <lb xml:id="l384"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">down from heaven &amp; enlightned the earth <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> his love</add> these things in the churches &amp; his people have <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">testimony</hi> of Iesus <del type="cancelled">&amp; are witnesses</del>. <del type="blockStrikethrough">[And as Iohns <lb xml:id="l385"/>Gospel begins <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">entirely</add> in this style of the Apocalyps so doth his first Epistle. <hi rend="underline">That <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was from the <lb xml:id="l386"/>beginning <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have heard <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have seen <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> eyes <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have looked us &amp; <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice></hi> <lb xml:id="l387"/>hands have handled of the word of life: for the life was manifested &amp; we have seen it <lb xml:id="l388"/>&amp; bear witness &amp; shew unto you that eternal life <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was with the father.]</del> And <lb xml:id="l389"/>as Iohn's Gospel begins entirely in the style of the Apocalyps so doth his first <lb xml:id="l390"/>Epistle: <hi rend="underline">That <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was from the beginning, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have heard, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have seen <lb xml:id="l391"/>with <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> eyes, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have looked upon, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> we have handled of the Word of <lb xml:id="l392"/>life: for the life was manifested &amp; we have seen it &amp; bear witness &amp; <lb xml:id="l393"/>shew unto you that eternal life <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was with the father</hi> &amp;c.</p>
<p xml:id="par27">This Prophesy was so far from being written by any other Iohn then the Apostle <lb xml:id="l394"/>that <del type="strikethrough">Christ</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">the Lamb</add> alone was <del type="strikethrough">found</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">declared</add> worthy to receive it of God. It is <del type="cancelled">therefore</del> entituled <hi rend="underline">The <lb xml:id="l395"/>Revelation of Iesus Christ <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> God gave unto him.</hi> He alone was worthy to re<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l396"/>ceive it of God <hi rend="underline">&amp; he sent his Angel</hi> the most worthy to receive it from him <lb xml:id="l397"/><hi rend="underline">&amp; shewed it unto his <del type="cancelled">Ioh</del> servant Iohn</hi> the most worthy among men, <hi rend="underline">who bare <lb xml:id="l398"/>record of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word of God &amp; of the testimony of Iesus Christ &amp; of all that he <lb xml:id="l399"/>saw.</hi> To attribute it to any other Angel then the spirit of truth or to any other <lb xml:id="l400"/>Iohn then the disciple whom Iesus loved is to weaken the testimony &amp; <del type="cancelled">in effect to</del> <lb xml:id="l401"/>undermine the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">credit of the</add> Prophesy. <del type="cancelled">And</del> Christ himself is sometimes called an Angel. For in this <lb xml:id="l402"/>Prophesy he is the mighty Angel who appears cloathed <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a cloud &amp; a rainbow about his head <lb xml:id="l403"/>&amp; his face as the sun &amp; his feet as pillars of fire &amp; a little book of prophesy in his hand. And <lb xml:id="l404"/>in Daniel he is called Michael the great Prince (or Messiah) <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">who is</add> set over the children of Israel &amp; shall <lb xml:id="l405"/>stand up at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> resurrection of those that sleep in the dust, &amp; who alone holdeth in matters of prophesy <lb xml:id="l406"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the Angel who was sent to inspire Daniel <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prophesy of the scripture of truth. An Angel <lb xml:id="l407"/>signifies a Messenger, &amp; <del type="cancelled">all the Pr</del> the son is sent by the father &amp; the Spirit of truth by the <lb xml:id="l408"/>son <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">from the father</add> &amp; all the Prophets were sent by the spirit of truth. The Law it self was given <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">to Moses</add> <del type="cancelled">b</del> by an <lb xml:id="l409"/>Angel in Mount Sina Act. 7. 38. <del type="cancelled">Tha</del> The Spirit of truth puts on various forms &amp; when ever he ap<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l410"/>peared in an humane form <del type="strikethrough">the Prophets</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">he is</add> called <del type="strikethrough">him</del> an Angel, &amp; sometimes a Man. This Angel in a <lb xml:id="l411"/>sevenfold form is the seven spirits before the throne from whom Iohn wishes Grace &amp; Peace to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l412"/>Churches. He inspired Iohn with this Prophesy for Iohn saith I was in the Spirit of the Lords <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">day</fw> <pb xml:id="p006v" n="6v"/><fw type="pag" place="topLeft">6v</fw> <hi rend="underline">day</hi>; and again, <hi rend="underline">immediately I was in the spirit.</hi> Iohn calls him the spirit <lb xml:id="l413"/>in saying <hi rend="underline">He that hath an ear let him hear what the spirit saith <lb xml:id="l414"/>unto the Churches.</hi> And, <hi rend="underline">The Lord God of the Holy Prophets sent his Angel <lb xml:id="l415"/>to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done,</hi> that is, God <lb xml:id="l416"/>spoke to Iohn by the same spirit by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he spoke to the holy prophets. And <lb xml:id="l417"/>again, <hi rend="underline">I Iesus <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">have</add> sent mine Angel to testify unto you these things in the Chur<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l418"/>ches</hi>: And what Angel so fit a witness as the spirit of truth? <add place="inline interlinear" indicator="no">All prophesy is <lb xml:id="l419"/>originally in the breast of him that sitteth upon the Throne &amp; he communicates it immediately to ‡</add> <addSpan spanTo="#addend006v-01" place="p006v-lower" startDescription="lower down f 6v" endDescription="higher up f 6v" resp="#mjh"/>‡ immediately to none but the Lamb: for the testimony of Iesus is <lb xml:id="l420"/>the spirit of the prophesy &amp; the Lamb sends it by his messenger to the Prophets. <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">If I go not away, saith Christ, the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart I will send him to you – &amp; when he</add> <del type="strikethrough">For the spirit <lb xml:id="l421"/>of truth speaks not</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">is come he will guide you into all <unclear reason="illgbl" cert="low">truth</unclear>. For he shall not speak</add> of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, <del type="strikethrough">saith Christ,</del> that he shall speak &amp; <lb xml:id="l422"/><del type="strikethrough">shall</del> will shew unto you things to come &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">he</add> shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine &amp; <lb xml:id="l423"/>shall shew it unto you. All things that the father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he <lb xml:id="l424"/>shall take of mine &amp; shall shew it unto you. Iohn 16. The Comforter <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">who is the Holy Ghost</add> whom the father will sen<supplied reason="damage">d</supplied> <lb xml:id="l425"/>in my name he shall teach you all things Iohn 14. 16. And when the Comforter is come whom I will <lb xml:id="l426"/>send unto you from the father, even the spirit of truth who proceedeth from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> father, he that tes<lb xml:id="l427"/>tify of me. <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">&amp;</unclear></del> Iohn <del type="cancelled">16.</del> 15. 26. From all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> it is manifest that there can be no prophesying but by in<lb xml:id="l428"/>spiration of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> holy spirit &amp; that unworthy persons are never inspired. All predicting of things by Astrology, Augury, Necromancy, soothsaying <lb xml:id="l429"/>conjuring: all pretending to <del type="strikethrough">infallibility by</del> prophesy or to infallibility by vicious men is imposture.</p><anchor xml:id="addend006v-01"/>
<p xml:id="par28">This Prophesy being of the highest consequence required to be well attested <lb xml:id="l430"/>It is of <del type="cancelled">such</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">such</del></add> consequence not for <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">enabling us to</add> foreknow<del type="cancelled">ing</del> things to come, but for satisfying <lb xml:id="l431"/>them that study it &amp; compare it <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> things past, that it is a true prophesy, &amp; <lb xml:id="l432"/>by consequence that the world is governed by providence, that there is a revealed <lb xml:id="l433"/>religion, what that religion is, who they are that profess it &amp; who err from <lb xml:id="l434"/>the truth; <del type="blockStrikethrough">[&amp; particularly that Christ is the Messiah <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Prince of the kings of the earth, &amp;</add> was not only a Prophet <lb xml:id="l435"/>but washed us from <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> sins in his <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">own</add> blood, <del type="strikethrough">arose</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">is the first begotten</add> from the dead &amp; is alive for <lb xml:id="l436"/>ever <unclear reason="illgbl" cert="medium">more</unclear> &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled">&amp; is the</del></add> shall reward all men according to their works &amp; is <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the great High Priest who offers up the prayers of the Saints</add> <del type="strikethrough">the Word of God is</del> <lb xml:id="l437"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled">his</del> God &amp; is</add> alone worthy to whom God reveals himself immediately &amp; by whom he reveales him<lb xml:id="l438"/>self to us &amp; is <del type="strikethrough">accordingly</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">therefore</add> called the <del type="strikethrough">Word of God</del> faithful &amp; true witness &amp; the Wor<supplied>d</supplied> <lb xml:id="l439"/>of God. And in <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">general this Prophesy</add> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2?"/></del> is the Key for interpreting the old Prophets concerning the last days &amp; <lb xml:id="l440"/>establishing the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">true</add> religion to be restored after the times of the great Apostacy <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">are expired &amp; the Prophesy is fulfilled &amp; fully interpreted</add>]</del> <addSpan spanTo="#addend006v-02" place="marginLeft" startDescription="the left margin" endDescription="f 6v" resp="#mjh"/>&amp; particularly that Christ is the Messiah the Prince of the Kings of the Earth, the King of Kings &amp; Lord of Lords, that the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Lamb</add> alone is worthy to whom God reveals himself immediately &amp; by whom he reveals <lb xml:id="l441"/>himself to us, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></del> &amp; is therefore called <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the Word of God &amp;</add> the faithful &amp; true Witness <del type="strikethrough">&amp; the Word of God</del> whose testimony is the spirit of prophesy; that he is the great High Priest who offers up the prayers of the saints <lb xml:id="l442"/>to God &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">by the sacrifice of himself</add> hath washed <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">us from</add> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></del> <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> sins in his own blood <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">that <del type="strikethrough">for <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del> we are to give <del type="strikethrough">him</del> glory to God for our creation &amp; to the Lamb for our redemption; that Iesus</add> is the first &amp; the last, the beginning of the creation of God &amp; the first begotten from the dead &amp; is alive for evermore &amp; shall <lb xml:id="l443"/>come to reward every man according to his works <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">✝ <del type="strikethrough">&amp; that we are to give glory to God for <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> <unclear reason="del" cert="low">creation</unclear> &amp; to the Lamb for <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> redemption. And th</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">✝ Iohn has many references to the old Prophets for interpreting them &amp; after <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">all are</add> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></del> fulfilled &amp; <del type="cancelled">interpreted</del> fully understood they <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">will</unclear></del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">are to</add> establish the truth which is to <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">scorned</unclear> the great Apostacy. And therefore it was not <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out a cause</del> <lb xml:id="l444"/>that the fearful &amp; unbeleiving &amp; abominable &amp; murderers &amp; whoremongers &amp; sorcerers &amp; all liars shall have their part in the lack of fire. It has many references to <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Daniel &amp;</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old Prophets for explaining them <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> <lb xml:id="l445"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">after it has been explained it self by the event of things:</add> <del type="strikethrough">particularly to Daniel <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="2"/> prophesy</del> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/> sealed but as the time of the end, many of the scripture of truth was sealed</del> by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> means in the time of the end knowledge is to be encreased &amp; <lb xml:id="l446"/>the everlasting Gospel is to be preached in all nations so that the wise shall understand but none of the wicked shall understand. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> It is that Gospel by <del type="cancelled">not the preaching of</del> the preaching of which the <lb xml:id="l447"/><del type="strikethrough">kingdoms of this as</del> the witnesses <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">are to</add> ascend up to heaven in a cloud &amp; the kingdoms of this <lb xml:id="l448"/>world are to become the kingdoms of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Lord &amp; his Christ <del type="cancelled">for ever</del> who shall <lb xml:id="l449"/>reign for ever &amp; ever. And therefore it was not without cause that Iohn <lb xml:id="l450"/>tells us: Blessed is – –<anchor xml:id="addend006v-02"/> And there<lb xml:id="l451"/>fore 'twas not without a cause that Iohn tells us <hi rend="underline">Bl<del type="cancelled">l</del>essed is he that <del type="strikethrough">heareth</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">readeth</add> &amp; <lb xml:id="l452"/>they that hear the words of this Prophesy &amp; keep those things that are written <lb xml:id="l453"/>therein. And, He that hath an ear let him hear what the spirit saith unto the Chur<lb xml:id="l454"/>ches.</hi> And, <hi rend="underline">if any man shall add to these things God shall add to him the plagues <del type="cancelled">of</del> <lb xml:id="l455"/><del type="strikethrough">this Book: &amp;</del> that are written in this Book: &amp; if any man shall take from the<del type="cancelled">se</del> words <lb xml:id="l456"/>of this Book God shall take <del type="strikethrough">from him the</del> away his part out of the Book of life.</hi> <lb xml:id="l457"/>there is no book in all the scriptures so much recommended &amp; guarded by providence <lb xml:id="l458"/>as this. And if they <del type="strikethrough">are thus threatned</del> that add to it or take from it <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">are thus threatned, how</add> can they be <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">secure</add> <add indicator="no" place="infralinear">innocent</add> <del type="strikethrough">innocent</del> <lb xml:id="l459"/>that <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">question it or</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">weaken it a then it <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> reject it, undermine it or weaken its authority.</p>
<p xml:id="par29">It is said to be of things <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> must shortly come to pass &amp; that <lb xml:id="l460"/>the time is at hand. For it began to be fulfilled from the time <lb xml:id="l461"/>that it was written &amp; <del type="strikethrough">&amp; an 1000 years are <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord.</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">as are</del></add> <del type="cancelled">It</del> conteins one <lb xml:id="l462"/>period of a 1000 years, another of a time times &amp; half <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l463"/>main period of Daniels fourth Beast &amp; therefore concerns a long <lb xml:id="l464"/>time, &amp; may extend to the second coming of Christ <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">&amp; &amp;</unclear></del> the day of <lb xml:id="l465"/>Iudgment &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">the</add> new heavens &amp; new earth, as it really doth: <del type="strikethrough">all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></add> <lb xml:id="l466"/>time tho it may seem long to scoffers, yet is <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the Lord a <lb xml:id="l467"/>short time &amp; but as one day.</p>

<p xml:id="par39">And this was the state of the Apocalyps till the 1000 years being misunderstood <lb xml:id="l474"/>brought a prejudice against this book. <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> Dionysius of Alexandria so far as I can find <lb xml:id="l475"/>was the first that questioned it; &amp; he did not question its being received by tradi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l476"/>tion, nor durst oppose it openly it being then generally received, but comple<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l477"/>mented it &amp; tried to weaken its authority by pretending that it differed in <lb xml:id="l478"/>style from Iohn's Gospel being fuller of <del type="cancelled">He</del> Barbarisms, &amp; therefore was <lb xml:id="l479"/>written by another Iohn. Which being a frivolous objection<del type="cancelled">s</del> the followers of <lb xml:id="l480"/>Dionysius are not to be regarded. All the difference ------ &amp; but as one day.</p>
